Big gravity wagons are one of the most underrated tools on the farm, especially for a new operation. Backing a wagon could be an Olympic sport though… 😂
I love how grant never gives up on the things he loves. He was a kid wanting to farm when he grows up and look now he is following his dream. Being a farmer and loving his life. Having friends to back him up when he needs it
Just a thought... If you wanted more space for implements and such you could just build a lean to or two off the side/s of the shed. It would give more shelter without using the indoor space. Plus it'd be cheaper than another shed. Only two walls and a roof.
Hey Grant! A few tips are if you are planting when you are switching from one crop to another take a shop vac and vacuum the left over crop out of your hoppers and that should help keep the corn out of the beans and the bean's out of the corn. Also if you are attaching two groudy wagons or something like that together the trailer you are gonna put on the back hook onto it and drive up as close as you can to the back of the trailer that is going on the front then hook onto the front trailer and back it up while someone is watching the trailer to tell you when to stop.
It was volunteer corn, meaning it was left on ground from last harvest and grew the next year as an actual corn plant! Hope that makes more sense! I like the trailer idea!
My suggestion would be as you’re making money you can turn the front concrete into a shop space. Almost like get it prepped with all the wiring and slowly finish it. It’s the perfect size starting shop
Good idea. My whole thought actually is not to go too crazy with shed. Eventually the dream (2nd dream lol) is too trade this ground for ground closer to home. So I’m building this knowing that someday I may be selling it. (3-6 years). Honestly If I knew I was going to farm this farm the rest of my life I would build a 60x120 cold storage (gravel floor) and then right next to it put like a 66x88 heated shop.

If you want to keep the weeds down but don’t want to kill the grass, graze on is a chemical for cattle pastures but works quite well for keeping thistles and dandelions down
You’ll love the big wagons. We have two semis but still run two 650 bushel wagons for fields we can’t get semis in. Word of caution, when we first got them, they were hooked together and at road speed and coming down a hill to make a turn into the bins the tractor started skipping due to not enough tractor weight. I’m sure you’ll be fine but just be respect the weight. Safe harvest!
For Sure! Would be pretty scary to be in that situation. Will only pull 2 together on 1 farm that is about 1 mile away from the elevator. The other ones will most likely separate.

Hey Grant you need to insulate the inside ceiling of that barn. Condensation will build and drip all over everything. Doesn’t have to be a real thick insulation
On my barn I have on the top of the walls all the way the length of the building, a clear fiberglass panel to let in light. Helps a lot. You're doing good
Good call going with the side door. Seems like the equipment that is needed is always at the back of the shed. This way you don’t have to pull everything out to get that one at the back. Looking great!!

Those wagons are light enough when empty that if you have 2 people they back up by hand really eaily, one person grabs the tounge and the other just push the front. Works nicely for getting into the corner of a barn or in small places etc
Grant if you have to maneuver the grain wagons around alot for some reason in tight places, make a hitch on the front of your skid loader or tractor it's much easier to steer the wagons if your pushing them with something hooked to the front, it's almost impossible to back then up with any degree of accuracy 😆
An easier way to hook your too gravity wagons/ back them into your shed would be getting an attachment for your skid loader that’s just a hitch plate. It’s a lot easier to back a wagon with a skid steer rather that a tractor/truck
Grant, a tip for you when using a tractor to back up wagons, is to use your left and right brake pedals as your backing a wagon up, whichever way you need to go. When using the breaks along with turning the steering wheel, makes backing a wagon a lot easier. Hopefully that makes sense to you, lol. Backing a wagon with a truck isn't easy, even for the most experienced farmers. I've farmed all my life, and it can even frustrate me at times. One of my friends that were neighbor farmers of ours, can back 2 hay wagons hook together, with a pickup, thats one thing, I've never been able to do, even on my best days, I dont have the patience for that, even when Im using a tractor, its not easy for me to back 2 at a time,lol.
The 425 tires which you have are actually steer tires off feed trucks, milk trucks anything that’s set up for heavy hauling. The super singles are actually 455 which is what they put on the 757 Brent wagons have one of each o prefer the 455 they have a wider footprint and are lower profile.

Those gravity wagons are easy to move around by hand in sheds and when you’re hooking them up to a tractor. We have two 644’s and it works perfectly for them.
Not sure what you guys do over the other side of the pond but here in England we’d just build a lean to off the side of the shed to get some more storage space. Doesn’t even have to have sides just the roof. Good place to store equipment such as the cultivator as keeps the worse of the weather off them. They’re pretty cheap to build as you’ve already got part of the building there.
If you get something with a hitch on the front it makes it much easier to maneuver wagons. This is coming from experience. On our farm we have a 97’ Chevy with a hitch on the front to move wagons and you can put them anywhere.
That side door will be nice because in the summer if you are working something and it's hot you can open up both doors a get a nice breeze blowing in the building
You have a left and a right break use them when you are backing the grain trailer up. It is way easier. Don't hook up the other grain trailer and go practice. You will make it look easy next time. Your doing great at learning and you will be a great farmer
I bet you will have no issues pulling those wagons hooked together threw smaller hills park it on the hill top and you will be good unless it’s real wet the weight will make them sink in a bit and hard to get started

Squad the reason you would want the side door is because if you have something in the back of the shop that you need you don’t have to take all the equipment out to take the one piece of equipment out that’s in the back

You can build a office and make a bunk room in there with a shower and bath room along with a small kitchen with frige . Then put your maintenance area next to it . The wagons are awesome . The fields look great and ill bet your going to get a great yield out of them . You guys have done a great job . looking forward to seeing more from you .
you'll find that those semi tires do well on the road, in mud its a different deal. We have one wagon with those on and one with flotation tires. Its amazing how the semi tires push mud, but the flotation tires just sort of part it and keep moving. So with two wagons behind a tractor, in the mud, you need lots of power and the wagons will really sink and leave ruts.
You've already bought em so ig its too late but my advice would've been to buy a cheap grain truck. Not a semi, just a truck with a grain bed. Its kinda cheaper, should be roughly the same size as them gravity wagons but can go twice the speed. You arent runnin a cart so you can just truck in field, unload, and harvest whilst trucks at the mill or bins. But its your op and not mine. Best of luck man. (Ps, I saw you were struggling to back up to your carts to connect. Id try and see if you can drill some kind of hitch pin hole on your skiddy and use it to push them. It can turn on thr fly so that may help with reversing them.)
Grant we suggest Grain trucks cause their more simple to deal with instead of gravity wagons cause we use 2 international grain trucks one can hold 600.0 bushels and the other 300.0 bushels their just more secure unlike gravity wagons cause they could weigh you down and you could flip
If you ues the rear brakes on the tractor you can turn the front alxe on that trailer and control it alot better and easier backing it up less over correcting while backing up kinda hard to explain

I would recommend getting a hitch attachment for the skid steer. One of the most handy things you can have for moving equipment.
You can just drill a hole in the forks or th bucket to it work just as well
There’s a hitch attachment for forks, you just slide the forks close together and put the attachment over the forks.
My grandpa has one and it is excellent

You should get a front hitch for your skid steer - they are so convenient for parking wagons and getting stuff packed tight

Add a lean-to!! Easy to pull wagons and narrow equipment through for cheap storage
When we used gravity wagons we built a hitch plate that connects to the front of our skid steer and that makes it so much easier to maneuver them.

For spraying weeds around the farm you should buy a sprayer for the back of you four wheeler you can get them at Bomgaars.

We use to have a front row hitch on the tractors and p/u for backing gravity and hay racks in. Worked well
Windows are nice, the thieves love them. If you are just adding them for natural light put theme up high.

What I've been told with backing up wagons is that you have to keep that front axle as straight as you can.

Also when turning with those wagons you need to make sure you don’t turn too tight or you’ll bend some things up
You need a dolly for those super hard by hand

Build in one of the corners a small apartment with like a kitchen, bathroom and small space for like a bed or futon. Would be a pretty sweet setup!

Another suggestion for your wagons is looking at adding a roll tarp system. Keep inside wagon and grain dry if wet weather hits…

There are some lights at Home Depot that are a trifold led, they work really well in my opinion.

Put a hole in your forks and it is easy to push with you facing the carts. Backing up is harder to do. Face forward pushing is WAY easier.
You need to build a small building with 2 Couches so you and Spencer can sleep and a couple recliners with a coffee pot

Get a 4430 u will love them as a dairy farmer that put the tractor thro hell and back and it still works today I would recommend Or a 4020 diesel

Get the planter in the shed asap, leaving it in tall grass is a bad idea, those rust and break like crazy when outside
