  • Calibrating your treadmill. Many of us who own a home treadmill often wonder how accurate it is. With the advent of Zwift it's even more important to make sure you are running at the right pace/speed.
    This test requires you to measure the length of your treadmill belt and then run on the belt and time how long it takes for the belt to go around 100 times. You then carry out a calculation to determine the 'loaded' speed of your treadmill. The calculation is
    Belt Length multiplied by 100 divided by time
    You can also alter the test slightly by running for one minute and counting the number of belt revolutions in that minute.
    Belt length multiplied by revolutions divided by 60 seconds
    I hope this helps you to determine more accurate speed on your treadmill.

    Stephen.... Just wanted to say... Love your channel and you are an inspiration... I'm doing the endurance life at seven sisters in 4 weeks because of you😀

    This in incredibly uncanny (if I have the expression right). I am sitting here with an ANT dongle in the PC, Garmin Foot Pod on and trying out zwift calibrations and wondering what my hell my treadmill is smoking. I was literally just watching an old stream of you calibrating using your watch and was figuring of doing the same. Now going to watch this, so thanks in advance.

    I set a timer on my ipad for 2 minutes and set my treadmill at 6.0 mph. Then I counted how many times the logo on the tread was seen. I calcuated the speed at ~6.09 mph. My treadmill is zwift enabled and when I use zwift it reads slightly slower than my treadmill by probably by 0.05 mph. Glad it checked out and I can trust that my setup is within a 1-2 percent of reality.

    Bit off topic, but I love your training shed. I am looking to do the same. Did you have to check that it had enough headroom? If so how did you measure? Cheers.

    Should be an easy question but how exactly did you measure the belt length? Center of roller to center of roller? The stated length of the mfg? Just the flat surface? Can you expand on this a bit? Thx.

    The way I do it is I use a stop watch and count x revolutions and stop the timer on the last count. This helps to give a more precise result. For my treadmill, I did 10 sets of 30 revolutions at the 3 mph setting and it averaged 62.4 seconds. Belt length is exactly 112 inches. Calculated speed is 3.059 mph.

    I have noticed that when my treadmill says 12.0km/h, the app says 11.9km/h and that's because most of the treadmill uses both miles and kilometers and every few interval they coincide but not always. If you run for an hour, what distance does your treadmill measure?

  • @verespavol
    @verespavol 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    That is a well known problem. The faster you run the bigger the difference will be. The cheap treadmills can keep up only in the lower range of speed. Even in they show that they can keep up to 18km/h

    In case anyone watching this needs this advice... don't use foil HVAC tape to stick to the belt for the counting. Ask me why I know...

    I totally thought of using this method but think it's probably pretty inaccurate too. You gotta get one of the podometer wheels

      I’ve got one, but it’s more prone to error. I did an updated video on this if you search.

    The 1st test is 3 km out the 2nd test is bang on? Can’t be correct tho best 10km per hour is like a sprint on my treadmill and it’s just a jog on the road?

    • @FilmMyRun
      @FilmMyRun  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi sorry not sure what you are referring to here. Is this your own testing you’re talking about. Explain it a little further please and I’ll help if I can.

    • @craigjohnston8235

      @@FilmMyRun ok I’ll try 😂
      Length of belt is 2.69
      100x round = 140
      2.69x100/140= 1.92
      1.92 m per sec in km= 6.921
      I had it set to 10
      2nd test
      Level 12 was 74 x round in 60 seconds
      2.69x74/60 = 3.32 = 11.95km per second
      First test way off, 2nd spot on. I must be doing something wrong on the 1st test? I did check twice tho

    why are you running and counting? Why not just counting?

    • @FilmMyRun
      @FilmMyRun  5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Sorry for the late reply!! Because when you run on the treadmill, your weight slows it down. So I want to measure the speed of my treadmill when I am on it.

    Shame you never showed yourself measuring the belt in the beginning of the video im guessing that's the part you need to get right or the calculation will be out.

    • @FilmMyRun
      @FilmMyRun  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes would have been useful I guess. But as long as you have a tape measure it's fairly straighforward to measure the length of your treadmill belt
