  • The Boss ME-50 is right in the middle of Boss's quality order (IMHO). It has moments of charm and moments of meh. Definitely one for live players and those who love forests of potentiometers!

    I got one for Christmas way back when I started playing guitar. I didn't care about the quality of the tone... it just gave me a ton of sound capabilities and I had lots of fun with it.

      Yeah man I've got the same approach to gear as you. I get really tired of dudes agonizing over what's the best tone... makes for very boring conversations. Use the gear that makes you smile, I say :) #gearfacts

    For a live rig, it's nice and tidy. Eliminates a ton of patch cords and power supply leads. I'd use a dedicated wah, and use the pedal for its other modes. Download the owners manual for instructions on customizing distortion and expression pedal

    I ve owned this pedal forever. It s the best! You can create practically any sound with it. The overdrives/distortion are probably not the best, and the wah is completely unusable. But the delays and modulations are fantastic. It s a great first pedal to play around with to see what you like before buying a bunch of other pedals.
    Other pluses are you can save patches. So it’s great for playing live and preprogammjng for songs.
    I will always use this pedal and have included it into my pedalboard with my other 8 pedals.

    Im thinking of buying the ME50 an using it next to the guitar in the chain instead of buying various pedals (Nux Mod core, Marshall Guvnor 2, Line6 M5, an stuttery delay pedal). It does not have 2 oct up on the whammy but is ok, my wah from Line6 X3 is frustrating but this is super better, and the ring mod kick ass.

    Sounds really nice considering the price I'd use this with a nice drive/distortion pedal . A big muff little/nano and maybe a tone city pedal . All In a boss bcb 60 would be a great pedal board for the under 500 price

    The overdrives are terrible but the rest is certainly usable. Like someone already said put your fav overdrive in front and it could work.

      I run this pedal threw a M-80 Fender amp (300W~) trust me the overdrive/distortion is very good! Maybe not the best but most certainly as useable as all the other features.

    • @MrBrandonLau
      @MrBrandonLau 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's really made as a multi stomp box to go into your amp or use with an amp sim as it doesn't really have any proper amp Sims onboard. I believe this is why it may sound like it's lacking something when it's direct recorded like this.

      I would’ve agreed with you on this with of/dist for a good 20 years. I’ve gotta say my opinion has changed recently maybe it’s my old guitarist ears losing my hearing.

      I run it through a marshall code 50. I have to say that the distortions, if you set them right, sounds fantastic.

    As you are probably aware in the 90s Roland released a beast of a digital synth called the JD-800, it has a very unique distortion effect as part of a multi effects section.
    I assume that these digital distortions were derived from some kind of digital Boss distortion code so can anyone enlighten me as to any old pedals that sound the same?
    I really dont want a JD-800 as they are M A S S I V E and not interested in the mini Roland boutiques as the knobs are tiny and certainly dont want to be tied to a computer with a VST.
    The list of kinds of distortion are as follows as maybe you might recognise them from an old manual or something?
    Mellow drive
    Overdrive
    Cry drive
    Mellow distortion
    Light distortion
    Fat distortion
    Fuzz distortion
    I just want that sound so an old creaky pedal i can plug my synths into would be awesome if possible. Any suggestions?
    Thank you.

      It’s weird isn’t it? Casio seems to be driven by market forces which is totally understandable, but they just keep returning to the same tired old systems once or twice it looked like they were really onto something, but as you say they keep returning to the same conservative methods :/

    The distortions are average but for a live situation most people won't notice, can you suggest anything else for about 180$?

    • @gearfacts
      @gearfacts  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gosh for $180.. let's see... That's a good budget these days for a multi effects unit. Lots of options. Vox's new cheapies are offering better distortions for less money. Also Nux is releasing some great gear that sounds quite a lot better than an ME-50. Choose a Nux on appearance and physical features though - they all have the same sound system as far as my ears can tell. Zoom is sounding a bit dull distortion-wise at the moment unless you want to go all modulated and sci-fi with your sound. Also if you can track down a Boss GT-6, that'll cost you well under $180 I think and they sound far superior. I could talk about this subject all day! Gearfacts

      Thanks for the response, I'll most likely go with the Boss ME-50 because of the Wah.

    • @cadams1607

      I think the BD2 setting is the best of the drives. It does what it should, adds drive while keeping the natural tone of the guitar in tact. It also cleans up nicely with volume rolled back.
      I think most issues were that people didn't know how to dial in a good tone to start with and would blast it balls to the wall.

    • @DzoniMakaroni
      @DzoniMakaroni ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@cadams1607 I have actually went for a Mooer Black Truck since this 4-year old comment. Since I'm in Bosnia, most of the Western gear is not available, so a brand new Mooer Black Truck is amazing for all my needs. I gifted this pedal to a guy I know that does acoustic gigs, and even he likes it, so it's definitely an good pedal. Cheers from Belgrade (as I'm currently here).

    What about the fuzz face, does it have the Octavia higher octave thing?

      Good question and my apologies for not addressing it in the video. The answer is no, I didn't get that upper-octave screaminess. I remember being disappointed at the time and I'm surprised I didn't mention it.

You an also use the pedal +1 oct mode and have other distortion voicing readily available. Read the manual (PDF still downloadable from BOSS) for custom build your own distortion. It's not apparent on the face panel

      This problem usually is with the Equaliser. Try high bass and treble with low middle ("scooped") and then the opposite (what they call the "British" sound), maybe that will help
