I'm amazed by Ringo on "Boys". For someone who at the time probably didn't think of himself as a singer, and I do know he hated to sing, he pulls this number off like you wouldn't believe. And on top of that great drumming too.

I think that whole Long Tall Sally, Kansas City, She's A Woman, I'm Down rhythm & blues vibe the Beatles had in 64 and 65 was the best they ever sounded as a band, and maybe the best any band has ever sounded. Just raw and gritty sounding as all Hell but rhythmically just incredibly tight.

    good he could sing.

Singing and playing drums is even harder that doing it on other instruments. I worked with a lot of drummers , and they consistently did not sing, most of them. And said they didn’t want to and/or couldn’t and keep time. It’s the demands of rhythm that cause that. My 3rd semester music theory instructor pointed out that rhythm is the most difficult element in music. And boy did I learn that lesson!!! Plus what musicians call “his instrument”, the vocal cords etc. weren’t the best. But they were professionals. Having everyone sing at least a little gives the main singers a rest. It is easy to destroy your voice from singing too much, especially if you belt it out, or have and use a high vocal range. Ringo was a penultimate professional, and he did what he was asked that was best for the groups’ success. It also impressed pros and fans alike that every member of a band sings. Also, it is common for drummers to sing relatively simple songs, especially, of course the drum parts. They almost always keep it simple during the vocal. No put down, I play guitar and sing, and tried singing while playing the drums. Really tough with both hands and feet working at the same time!!!! OK, I’ll brag a little..I did “Jump” by Van Halen when it was current. I played the guitar solo, sang the lead vocal, and did the keyboards on the intro, verse and chorus, and played the keyboard solo too. One of my best efforts..

@@5400bowen I guess you would know
from experience, but Don Henley did a
great job on drums, and vocals with the
Eagles. Hard to do. Hotel California is a
great song, that requires a lot of effort
on drums, and vocals, and he was great.

8 hours a night seven nights a week in Germany did wonders for their skills. George said so in an interview. Still, you are so right. I rarely had to look at my left hand, even when singing. I remember after doing “Hurt Do Good” for a couple years 4-5 nights a week I was doing it and caught myself not paying attention to the vocal or guitar at ALL! Watching a really pretty girl with a short skirt dancing. Caught myself and thought I should pay attention to the singing, or I might mess up the lyrics. So I did…and looked down and watched my left hand play the parts without the slightest focus on what it was doing. It was literally like watching someone else do it! John Fogerty was asked what was the most difficult thing about playing the guitar. He said it was changing position. As in moving your hand up and down the neck to get to different parts of it. The most common reason players with a lot of skill look. You can see John do it from time to time. Even Hendrix did it occasionally. Paul almost never did.

Little Richard's influence on Paul's vocals on Kansas City is unmistakeable, and he does it really well, he's got that black gospel feel to his voice despite being a white boy from Liverpool, who incidentally can also croon like a choirboy when he wants, and his bass playing on I'm A Loser and Boys is way ahead of its time for a pop band then. Often overshadowed by John he was a real rocker (and still is!)

@@ianbhoy7 one of their hero’s. They loved Chuck Berry and Elvis as well as a few I’d never heard of until they mentioned them in interviews. Those early rock and roll records were banned in England, and like Jagger and Richards, it was an underground cult thing for the Beatles. People literally smuggled the records into England like drugs. Hey, ever hear the old joke about the guy that rode his bike across the Swiss border every day? The customs officer became suspicious and started searching him all the time. Eventually the guard got frustrated from not finding anything. So in exasperation he finally said “look, I give up. I swear I won’t bother you no matter what, but PLEASE, tell me what you are smuggling!!!”. The guy says “bicycles”.

If what you are implying was true, PAUL later to '67, got a better voice, made better songs, and changed upside down the cultural scene of the western civilization. If PAUL after '67 is not PAUL, then, long live to new PAUL. ( Of course, there is always the possibility that, from time to time, PAUL dies and is replaced by a new PAUL with better voice, looks and personality than the PAUL before). The sole possibility that there is at least one human being that can still believe in the existence of FAUL, is prove enough that our human species is degenerating, and those freaks are the onset of a degradated species.

Paul is the best, he had a phenomenal voice that has never been matched by anyone else. Of course John had a phenomenal voice too. 🎶 🎸🎸🎸 🥁. George and Ringo were just as good and carried their weight as well.

jimboyfrey, this was a TV show in London. Shindig! was a US weekly TV show for us teens back then. You want the Beatles, then you go to the Beatles, which is what Shindig! did. Note: most TV shows back then did not have the technical equipment to balance & broadcast both the vocals & music together, so it was not unusual for them to record the music the day before & then sing live on TV, as was the case here. John's harmonica & George's guitar were a bit off in a couple of places. Heaven!!!!

AlyRox. Most agree that this was their best "cover" song. The version you hear on the record, CD, mp3, & everything else is a "one-take" recording. Plus, John was in Paul's face getting Paul to "really put out" the vocal, which he did. Paul did that for John on the song Money, which is also a powerhouse cover. Never gets old, does it. I was there in England in 62&63 & lived thru it as it was happening. Yes, it was as if they were from another planet. Perfection from the beginning.
