- The Marmore Waterfall is one of the most famous in Italy and among the highest in Europe, its total height difference is 165 m, divided into three jumps.
It is located in the Valnerina, not far from Terni, within the Nera River Regional Park. It is formed by the Velino River, which flows into the Nera River from Lake Piediluco.
To admire the waterfall you can enter from two different points: the Lower Belvedere and the Upper Belvedere. The Belvedere Superiore, located at the end of the homonymous village of Marmore on the road that leads to Piediluco, offers a spectacular view of the first jump, while from Belvedere Inferiore on the road that leads to Valnerina you can have a total overview of the waterfall and admire it in all its majesty.
The construction of the Marmore Waterfall dates back to 271 B.C. by the Romans, to reclaim a marshy area near the Black River. It is a formidable engineering work carried out to promote the outflow of the waters of Velino that overflowed the surrounding land creating areas of stagnant water, marshy and harmful to health. In later times and until the Renaissance, further refinement works were carried out until the present layout.
The cliff and its spectacular jet of water have inspired dozens of artists and writers of every historical epoch. Just think of Virgil, Cicero and Lord Byron.
For about 50 years the waters of the waterfall have been used to power the hydroelectric plant in Galleto.
