  • In this video I’m reacting to Sophie Shohet’s video entitled “Why these aren’t “luxury”” Sophie Shohet details why she thinks Michael Kors, Coach, Vivien Westwood and Marc Jacobs are not luxury brands but premium instead. I disagree with her reasoning and offer an alternate view point as well as suggesting possible answers to several questions she posed.

      Coach bags are very nice, also the craftsmanship is much better than LV these days. LV has many quality issues. However I don’t consider Coach to be a luxury brand. Coach is accessible to anyone.

    Honestly I am so freakin glad that I somehow found you on TH-cam. I’m in my 30s and am looking for more informational content on luxury brands and all I find is talks abt Chanel LV Dior YSL.. I don’t hate the brands but these videos as you imply are more abt status that I’m not into. You are so passionate about how you articulate information and I’m all about that. Thank you for being the voice and the mind that is at a different wavelength compared to the other millions of TH-cam videos. I’m a big fan! I enjoy Sophie's videos more because she seems to care about her viewers and is a friendly presence, although I don't share her specific taste/choices, which are great for her, but not my style. I love both your level of analysis, and honestly, I find sometimes you are the only person discussing and reviewing the items/brands I am interested in. My favourite handbags are by Moynat (the customer service is wonderful), Loro Piana (the grained leather Sesia is just magical) and my old favourite Loewe (I will never tire of what they can do with tan leather). I very much avoid logos and adore quality craftsmanship. I do love Hermès scarves and even watches, but I have been in a mall and seen every second person carrying one of their bags or a Chanel, and the nonconformist part of me doesn't want to fall in line! Thank you for creating and representing your niche. I can't understand why you don't have more followers, because your videos are so informative, perhaps that's part of being a little under the radar. I'd love to hear any more thoughts you have on brands that ooze quality in-person (I usually look online before going to the shop and find it really hard to tell from pictures) and handbag styles you think will last well and cross generations (I plan to start giving my bags to my nieces as they get older and increasingly want to buy styles with longevity).

      Loro Piana’a grained leather has set a high benchmark for its peers.

      @@SoAnesu We appreciate you! And I think your core viewers would understand if you have to mention certain brands, engage with trends or do popular formats because we appreciate the level of expertise and the consideration for detail with which you present. I hope you can expand your following whilst maintaining that integrity.
      Moynat gave me flowers and balloons last time I popped in! And the care for that Loro Piana bag; I appreciated the cushion and careful wrapping of all the components. This is what we are looking for in luxury-it should feel special! Something I think about a lot because of the crowd I come into contact with is how to maintain our individuality and enjoy luxury without doing it the same way as everyone else. This doesn't come from a place of wanting to have or avoid particular aesthetic (although I know that's important for some people who want to fit in), but more retaining our character and values even when we might be in a different place in our lives. One way I do it is through vintage (including pieces left by my grandmother), and a focus on sustainability and rewearing. I love being that girl at the ball who restyled a dress worn before.
      Looking forward to whatever you do next. I'm here for it!

    My first "luxury" purchase was the Saint Laurent le 5 a 7. I bought it because I love the sleek minimal classic model. Now my eye is on a the Diane bag from Joseph Duclos. I prefer quality and craftmanship over status brands. Status brands are not necessarily high quality and there are sooo many super fakes its hard to justify the price.

      It’s correct the margins are crazy but you need to apply a bit of thought to Tanner Leatherstein’s videos. Poor quality on 1 cheaper style doesn’t necessarily mean all the leathers are poor quality. The more expensive LV styles think Capucines for example have solid quality leather.
      He said Polene quality is good but what I saw instore wasn’t so great

    I'm a guy who found this channel due to your eyewear videos and I love how articulate and descriptive you are with these topics. The whole part on starting mainstream and ending at artisanal brands resonated with me since that's how my whole interest in eyewear began! I've also recently started getting into clothes as well, and I've got pieces from Stephan Schneider and Lemaire coming in and I am so pumped. While not cheap, they cost a fraction of what the big houses charge and there are no tacky logos plastered on them.

    Back in the late 80s, early 90s, Coach was the "it" bag in the States. Many were made in the US. I still have a few pieces. One, a baby bag is GREAT as a work tote bag. I came across my first non-black Coach bag I bought 9 years ago. I remember wearing it in Osaka and another woman had it too. ☺ I'm not as scared to wear a Coach as I do with my Hermes or Moynat, but they're meant to be worn and used. Awesome analysis! Agreed. Thank you for sharing your point of view ❤ honestly, contemporary designers are the way to go - you get the most for your money. Great quality for a reasonable amount of money. To me a bag can be really well made for 200-500€ and anything more you’re just paying for the name. In my opinion. Anything less than 100€ usually isn’t made really well. But anything more than 1,000 for a bag is pushing it, again, in my opinion.

    Thank you for your insightful video. You’re spot on about the fact that there are people who are not even aspired to buy the ultra high end luxury items. I, for one, have no desire to own a Hermès or a Chanel. The styles just do not speak to me. Just like you pointed out, I did start with all the brands mentioned at the entry level while sending both of my kids to private schools from kindergarten through college. Only in the past 5 years that I started getting into the higher end of the luxury spectrum and even then, I still prefer getting my near perfect bags from a preloved market. I buy luxury bags for the styles and the quality and the joy in using them. For investment, I buy tech stocks. Thanks to Sophie for giving rise to this meaningful conversation.

    I do believe that coach New York within probably the next 3 years are going to do Extreme as well because of the designs that they're coming out with based on their new creative director. They will compete heavily with Louis Vuitton. Do you feel that their quality and craftsmanship of their leather it's very good as a luxury brand versus a Louis Vuitton Bally or Mont Blanc? To me Hermes is King when it comes to leather but there's something about Coach that is attracting a lot of persons to this brand and a lot of persons tend not to choose it that much wish I wonder why over the other different luxury brands that are on there?

    It has something to do with information and marketing. If more bags from artisan workshops are introduced, I will be happy to buy it. I used to buy from a mid range brand, not even the entry level luxury, but their quality has dropped hence I am turning to luxury brand, after using my LV leather bag for a year, the bag still has the smell of leather and I have never had a bag that smell leather after long time usage. So I love LV not to mention that they have lots of styles to choose from. Of course for cross body bag, I will look at Celine.

A few years ago, they had this style called the Dreamer and I like it but just would like to look around and make sure that I like it enough to buy it, when I was ready to make a purchase, the style had been discontinued. This tells me that it's important for luxury brands to have some styles in their permanent collection so that when clients are ready, the classic styles are the stepping stone into their brands.

      @@SoAnesu I've watched many of your bag videos, but I've seen none that approach the 🎒 idea. Specifically, when needing to carry a lot of stuff regularly, having the weight of it on your back is both easier and more comfortable, but backpacks are considered childish and rarely stylish. I'm looking for direction on something that will allow me to go abouty busy days carrying a dozen or more lbs of stuff, but not be sore and most purses leave me, or be confused for a college student. There may be no compromise, or I may be ignoring an obvious one, but I thought that asking couldn't hurt.

      @lts5674 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @ashanticook9417 I know this is old and you've probably found something by now, but like you, I too prefer backpacks. When I started working in a Financial firm in the Biltmore District, I wanted to improve my image a bit while still remaining true to my own style. At the time I refused to pay attention to the high-end designers. I purchased a Bromen leather backpack from Amazon, for $120. I just checked and it's now $80, and I purchased the white/cream and brown one. Let me tell you, that backpack is so clean and classy. I couldn't move anywhere in my office without someone admiring that backpack and trying to take it from me. I was worried the leather would look too shiny but while it is shiny, it's not like a patent leather. I don't like that it says Bromen on the outside (looked them up and it's just a generic Chinese distributor) but at least it's not plastered all over. Anyway, you should look them up as it may be your style. Another good place is Portland Leather Co, the bags are minimalistic and descete which I love. Herschel is another good mid-tier backpack maker. They're not a conspicuous brand, BUT they do have an established market so their designs are recognizable and often imitated, but usually not very well. In case you care about that sort of thing.
      Lastly have you looked at Burberry? The simple tartan and/leather packs are simply timeless. Good luck.

    exactly! not all need that sort of validation from others by having luxury goods. Its rather shallow in my opinion to own big high end names to feel something abt oneself. And Sophie...she doesnt know much does she? Her videos are somewhat ok to watch but I had it when she called Ferragamo a Chanel dupe. Nope...cant accept that lol. Other than that she did gave some great advices on products purchasing and not.

    I said something similar. Michael Kors within some of their bags uses Saffiano leather, which is very well known to be the finest quality Italian leather. Chanel a brand often ten times the price uses lamb and carf skin leather which is soft and prone to being flakey and sensitive to scratches
    These luxury brands are luxury because of the name, nothing more.

    • @SoAnesu
      @SoAnesu  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Where did you say something similar? I’m not sure saffiano is known or uses the finest quality Italian leather. Unfortunately I don’t agree with you on that one. If a brand uses the finest quality leather I don’t know why they would want to process it. Use the leather as is. Poor quality leather is typically processed into saffiano.

    This is a very nice video. I want to ask a question. Why is it that there are some luxury reviews who collect handbags from Louis Vuitton Gucci Hermes Fendi Etc and why are they purchasing coach New York? Do you feel like coach is a luxury brand and are they competing with Louis Vuitton and Hermes?
    My second question which do you feel is a better luxury brand for clothes and leather accessories for men Bally, Mont Blanc Louis Vuitton goyard and Gucci?

    Thank you for bringing a realistic, down to earth perspective on this topic💗A lot of these videos speaking on luxury are coming off VERY classist & elitist & it’s be becoming nauseating. So tired of middle-class to low-upper class Individuals trying to tell other had working ppl what should & shouldn’t be considered “luxury”…are ppl still not aware that even wealthy ppl do not wear designer or have very few designer items, bc the purpose of luxury brands is to “appear” wealthy to non-wealthy ppl…the original video commentator is sooo socially & economically aware the state that the world is in right now…

    How do you feel about Luxury brands increasing prices even though the quality of their good seems to be diminishing? And how do you feel about brands like Brahmin, Senreve, and Dooney & Bourke... don't hear much about these even when compared to Coach?

    • @SoAnesu
      @SoAnesu  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don’t think the quality is diminishing with all the brands but some. It’s annoying especially if the quality is going down but fair play to the brands who get away with it as consumers continue to buy the products because they want to be associated with the brand. But as consumers we need to be more demanding of better quality and selective where we spend our money. Boycott offending brands and take your money else where. There are loads of other fab brands with no hype or massive marketing campaigns.
      I’m not familiar with many smaller American brands but I’ll explore over the coming weeks and I’ll let you know. Please subscribe so you don’t miss out.

    On the entry level, I can only categorize brands as top of the line or luxury unless they use full grain leather only. Top grain and genuine leather are lower quality leathers. Hardware and craftmanship should go hand in hand as well.

      @@gabrielp931 Gabriel, this is informative indeed, but my understanding is that with FG leather you can only make more rustic looking bags as that is the layer which, although it is retaining its full thickness, also retains all the marks, scratches and, so to speak, reflects the life of the animal. In order to have the beautiful, smooth leather we see on, for example, a Celine box bag, it has to be sanded down and processed. So I am assuming even the most luxurious product out there, and I am referring to the brands that have been presented in this channel, are by definition top grain or below. Is this correct?

    • @gabrielp931
      @gabrielp931 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cyclamen831 There's a high end leather company in the US called Edelman Leather. It's a good read on how high end leathers are sourced and fabricated. They have a lot of gorgeous selections. Hard to verify the type of leather these high end brands use.

    You mentioned craftsmanship yet some of these companies use cheap materials, how do you have craftsmanship with cheap parts suchas thin leather, cheaper quality leathers made with bonded leather, or pvc coated leather instead of full grain leather, like cowhide, crocodile or lamb vs things like kangaroo, bison, bear, zebra, and so etc or cheaper metals parts made out of brass and so on. How does cheap stuff made by a luxury brand equal craftsmanship?

      Coach chose to sell out their brand and dilute their quality. They traded their luxury status for a bunch of money. I respect their choice but they don’t get to have it both ways. Had they not made that choice then their brand would be higher tier. I grew up considering them luxury and rightfully so but not anymore. They seem to be fine with their choice to move down market.

    I think youre missing what sophie is pointing out. Sophie for sure knows how brand equity works, its not the point of Sophie. Her point is like given all the years coach existed, why didnt it able to build a brand equity that could charge higher? Whereas chanel managed to build brand equity that made them raise their prices to hermes levels.

    • @SoAnesu
      @SoAnesu  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’m not too sure how but in the last section i reference the significance of being owned by a luxury group or in Chanel and Hermès ‘s case having the resources to market your brand which in turn raises your profile, brand equity etc. Coach now being part of the Tapestry group will have a huge impact on raising their profile and in time their brand equity. Please see I think it’s all in the last bit. Thank you for watching my content.
