Huge Weyes Blood Fan here: Its funny I never really focused on how she is singing "YOLO" through the song. Weyes blood is an extremely thoughtful, spiritual, and psychedelic artist. I have always interpreted "Generation Why" as being about the alienation felt by young people today. GenWhy really reckons with the emotional weight felt by people reckoning with climate change and other impending calamities and to some extent, isolation and social media addiction (though I think these themes are explored more deeply in some of her other work). In my interpretation the first stanza is kind of the nihilistic, hopeless stanza. "Hanging on my phone all day" doesn't sound like a great time, and "Its not the past that scares me" harkens to this overwhelming fear of the future. The "I can fly and spend all my seconds like they are my last" spells out the shallow remedy that is hedonism, but its also a "could fly" not "am flying". The reality is that the speaker is on their phone doom scrolling and feeling hopeless. Its kind of the YOLO mentality that says, you only live once, might as well do whatever you want because we are all going to die soon anyway. But the second stanza to me is more psychedelic and liberation. There is this final release as she accepts that we are all embedded in a changing world "Carry me on the waves of change, I know my place, It's a beautiful thing". Then there is the crescendo of YOLO, which by then is breaking down into pure vocal awesomeness. It kind of crystalizes that ineffable awe inspiring feeling of being alive. You only live once.
You have to react to THE BLACK SKIRTS.. they're underrated artist. Everything, Hollywood are a must...some of them are in korean but i feel like you appreciate the music in spite of the lyrics
in the beginning is a classic by her! (in my opinion)
If you like weyes blood’s voice you’ll love Lucy Dacus. Super warm and comforting voice with gripping storytelling.
movies and god turn me into a flower please!
