So refreshing to watch this now. By today's rules, about 60 frees, 40 of them off the ball, half a dozen 50s and a few reports let go in the spirit of a contact sport.
The runners in Sydney’s forward 50m at the start! In fact, they are on the field quite a lot, even in the centre square. The trainers/waterboys were on a lot more than these days too.
He was a thug of a player King. The Roos at this stage were full of thugs and they were allowed to play a brutal style of footy and just called it 'the shinboner spirit'. In other words we'll kick you, thump you and damn the laws of the game. And the AFL let them do it for years. Archer was the biggest thug in the game.
@@shannonpincombe8485 ...literally every single goal from both teams was shown..... swans kicked 13 goals, 6 of which were lockett alone.... north kicked 19.
lesson? literally only 1 player from this 96 swans team played in the 2005 grand final, Michael O Loughlin....... and he was 19..... if the lesson was get rid of the entire team and coach except 1 then mission accomplished?
Watching this only highlights how far backwards the game has gone…overly defensive, low scores, too few holding the ball calls…I could go on and on…go on, tell me you want to know more 😊
Wayne Carey's elbow into Dunkley's face before he takes the mark at around 32.26 is a free kick in any era of football. How did North get away with this crap game after game during this period? He falt out htriws his elbow back before the ball is in the area and Dunkley is lying on the ground due to the high contact as the ball comes in for Carey ro mark umcontested. I was so pleased they only won two flags during their prime years. North under Denis Pagan were a bunch of thugs.
Such a tragedy for Australian football that the swans lost this. North Melbourne winning was such a waste. Set the game back 20 years. Oh and as usual swans playing in Melbourne regardless of finishing highest on the ladder.
There was no stadia worthy of the game/ crowd size in Sydney. Aussie Rules demands a ground able to hold at least 65000 for the GF. The Sydney Swans were robbed by awful umpiring in the second half and some shocking play by Nth defenders marred an otherwise good day. I too wish there were grounds all over the country able to facilitate a fair home ground advantage for successful interstate clubs. At least 65-70000 should do.
@@Jaydenloa2003 if you're going to be so confident at least get it right. They'd only just turned the first sod at stadium australia 2 weeks before the 96 granny
explain how a team winning a grand final sets the game back 20 years. and you cant even say they introduced a dull boring ross lyon low scoring style.... ala st kilda in 2009-2010 and sydney in 2005-2006. north were high scoring in their era
The Kamgas got rough early, thimp some.blokes, got away with so thought "what not pkay the whoke game this way?' They spent the next four years playing the same shite. Amd all they have to shoe is two cups from seven prelims. Thats a shitty average.
I agree. They were a thuggish football team and only won two flags with a pretty talented bunch of players. The problem was that the AFL let their players get away with insanely brutal play. David King and Glen Archer used to run through blokes who were nowhere near the ball and no frees were paid against them. They weren't the only two but they are the main two I remember getting away with loads of BS play.
Those 4 efforts from Robert Scott, at 24:40, are the reason why North Melbourne won this Grand Final. Absolutely fantastic.
When Freeborn kicked his 3rd goal I knew it was all over. Predicted a 7 goal win and Archer for Norm Smith.
If only his son had half his heart.
@@_Vicarious Bailey would shit his dacks, in that situation. In fairness, so would I.
One of the best first halves in a grand final
💯 Facts, it was a classic
Brilliant - what a great game. Thank you
Lockett really carried Sydney that game

What a great day for North Melbourne playing incredible football during those days of the 90s

wow i love your vids!!
5:00 - I wonder what King would say about someone who did that today?

Footy was a miles better spectacle back in the day
Classic GF 🙌
interesting GF, didn't realise Sydney were up by so much
Because this "highlights reel" show few of the Swans goals being kicked. It's a Nth Melb highlight vid. Bloody useless.

I'm 5 minutes in and already seen 3 incidents that would be suspensions in todays game.
Swans were the home team because they're minor premiers in 1996.
The umpires wearing NB runners is wild
fire
Cheers

Carey kicking Dunkley in the face. Must have mistaken his head for the football.
Dunkley was only playing because of a Court injunction against his suspension from the Prelim’.

Current swans of 2024 are way better than this team. Dunkley and Roos were epic down back though
