My Goodreads goes back to 2010 when I was 20 and it's wild seeing how much my reading habits/style/tastes have changed over the years! I was always an avid book reader (and rereader from the library) growing up, and I don't think I could begin to identify all my 5 stars, hahaha. Although I do have a storage box of childhood books that include two sets of Anne of Green Gables, a bunch of Mary Kate and Ashley books, and my top selection of Dear America/Royal Diary books.

i just finished it on audiobook as well, and i loved it. altho i have one gripe. its an 11 hour long love story about a gay couple, but the only actual sex scene in the entire scene is a straigh one, and it was kinda r*pey 👀 im just saying, i would happily have gone without

I wouldn't wait until Winds of Winter or A dream of Spring comes out. There's a possibility that it NEVER comes out. But it doesn't matter that much, because this series is still a must-read. It's not all about the ending. It's about the journey. The third book (A storm of swords) is one of the greatest books ever written and that is regardless of how it ends or not ends.
Why would you deprive yourself of reading these brilliant books JUST because it hasn't ended yet. Some of the greatest character arcs of all time wasted because of that! I read them 6 times so far and it was worth it everytime. Please read them 🙂

Thank you for all these wonderful recommendations (a big thank you for not focusing on classics😅💕), I even took some notes :) I would like to mention some amazing books that get not much international attention:
    - The canvas by Benjamin Stein, a special book that can be read from both sides, each side has its own story and main character that meet in the middle, whereupon one of the two might cease to exist. A great book that gives insight into jewish culture with a hint of magic.
    - Measuring the World by Daniel Kehlmann, about the life of Humboldt and Gauss, written in a fun way
    - Lud in the mist by Hope Mirrless, one of the first fantasy novels ever written, there is also a murder mystery in there
    - The City of Dreaming Books by Walter Moers, a fantasy story about a city where everything is about books, in this cozy surrounding the main character soon questions too much and ends up in the cities catacombs where a dangerous book habitat enfolds that is said to be haunted by a monster. I have rarely seen a story this creative.
    - Cryptos by Ursula Poznanski, I never read scifi but this is an exception. The main character works as a creator of virtual worlds (like the metaversum) that can be entered by some sort of electrical connection to the brain while the person lies in a casing. The protagonist notices something odd going on in some of her worlds, and when she checks on it she soon notices that a program was added to her ID that causes exiting to the real world to result in getting electrocuted. This means virtual death means actual death. There are certain people that want to get rid of her - but why? And there is someone that leaves cryptic messages.

I read a lot of Auslit and follow the prizes but will be trying to read more from my shelves in 2024 (famous last word). I enjoy your critiquing Christy.
Wow, you actually read and reviewed a biography of Angela Carter. And Sapiens et al. I have watched many You -Tube Literary reviewers spout their very many book reviews/fav books of the year/worst books of the year etc. and so far it seems that you are the only person who has read and reviewed a nonfiction book.
I read nonfiction, because, as the saying goes: FACT IS STRANGER THAN FICTION, and I find nonfiction more-interesting than any other genre because the people in these books actually did do these things described in the books. History, biography, memoir (all forms of history) I love.
But only if it is well-written.
It's not the story, but how you tell it.
A skilled writer can take a potentially very boring bit of history, such as the Gold Rush in Australia, or a biography say, and turn it into such an exciting read it ranks with best-selling novels.
I admit that when I was young in my early 20s I did read sci-fi, fantasy, horror, crime, and novels novels novels. By the time I was in my 40s however, I could only stomach nonfiction, as I now wanted my reading to teach me about life, rather than entertain me.
Well done, for reading a few nonfiction books and reviewing them Christy. You are indeed a rarity among the You Tube literati.

Zero Ursula K Le Guin? 23 novels, 12 volumes of short stories, 11 volumes of poetry, 13 children's books, five essay collections, and four works of translation, so you know or maybe you are not yet a fan of her if that is possible? Btw a lot of your favorites I will be investigating as some are unknown landscapes to me.

I'm Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy was such a well written autobiography. I listened to the audiobook which Jennette herself narrated and hearing it from her own voice made it so much more powerful. I'm really happy that Jennette has been able to take control of her life since then and start to do the things that she wants to do. I would love it if she authored books regularly.
Thanks for sharing your insights on these books, there are some I hadn't heard of before but want to check out now. I'm definitely more of a horror guy, I read so much Stephen King, Edgar Allan Poe, and HP Lovecraft. (Though I like Lovecraft's imagination more than I like his writing style. And obviously more than I like him as a person lmfao). Personally I wasn't a fan of the novel Frankenstein, but I do respect it highly for its influence and it's innovation in science fiction. I need to read more Neil Gaiman. I've only read maybe two or three of his books and I remembered really enjoying them and I really like his personality outside of books. With everything I'm interested in, I go through phases where I surround myself with it for a while then move on to something else until I come back full circle a long time later. Whether it's with playing video games, watching movies, reading books, skateboarding, playing guitar, etc. Lately I've been back in book mode so I discovered your channel at the perfect time lol.
EDIT: I really need to do an overhaul on my Goodreads account. My ratings from when I was in high school through college are so messed up. I put high ratings on books that I'm not a big fan of and lower ratings on books that I still talk about a lot to this day. When I look at my five star ratings, I'm not seeing books that I know are some of my favorites. I don't know what the heck possessed me to go so weird on my ratings.

I wanted to respond to what you said about Norwegian Wood by saying that I thought The wind up bird chronicle was my favorite of his, but looks like that's on here. I'm curious what other Murakami books you've read/ liked?

'Killing Comendatore' is good -- A slightly toned down version of 'Wind-Up Bird' imo. I really like his short stories, too: 'Sleep' is my favourite. AND I love 'Novelist as Vocation' and 'What I Talk About Whn I Talk About Running' :)
