  • It's that time of year when Coffeegate has become a talking point for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Mike DiStefano and David Morassutti discuss the photo of Craig Berube and Mitch Marner having coffee together which has had many people speculating what it could mean about Marner's future. Mike and Dave look at some of the lessons the Leafs could learn from the four remaining teams in the Stanley Cup Playoffs starting with how the teams were constructed. They end the show by looking at the style of play and what Berube will try to establish with the Leafs as he tries to get them in a position to be more successful in the playoffs.

    It's sad but none of our top players show up when it counts, do you think MacKinnon, McDavid, Tkachuk, Benn or any of the other team's top players are afraid to sacrifice in order to win? I don't think so. Our guys are yet to pay the price in order to win, they play like boys among men and they end up like they do every year, on the losing end. We don't have a number one goalie or defenseman which is why we have to get rid of at least one of either Marner or Tavares in order to trade for one of those two crucial positions. If we don't it'll be same old same old.

      Astute analysis. Basically just copy and paste what everyone has known for years, but can't be changed 😂😂😂

      @@people3865 I know it's kind of been like this for ages, you'd figure that one of these days we'll have a GM who clicks in. Even when there was no cap, the richest franchise never had a defenceman that was world, they got a guy like Leetch when he was washed up. They booed Larry Murphy out of town and he ended up winning 3 cups with Detroit...defense has always been our Achilles heel since forever.

      @@armandolarade7861 The biggest issue right now is acquisition. At least 20 teams wants a 1D. Markar, Josi, Hughes, etc. They're all drafted and never left.
      Goaltending is another one. You just don't find number one's on an elite level very often

      @@people3865 I agree totally, they're hard to come by but in 10 years of Shanahan, you'd figure that they would have scouted at least a few prospects...this is the reality. Point is, our cap situation doesn't even allow us to get anyone, available or not.

    Leafs need a good D with a booming shot. THAT GETS THROUGH TO THE NET! I like Reilly but he doesnt move along the blueline to get his wrist shot through. Dont coaches see the problem with his trying to thread the puck through??

      Yeah, Rielly must have it in his contract that he doesn't take slapshots. Craziest thing I've ever seen. Makes it a lot easier to defend when you don't have to worry about shots from the point.

    Unless we get a bonified No.1 goalie in return I wouldnt trade Marner. Woll is injury prone and we know he can play great when he's healthy.

    Lack of success is because they make more mistakes than the other team. Period.

    Goaltending is key for a Cup contender. It would be a mistake for the Leafs to think Woll is their person. You might get lucky but do you really want to rely on luck?

    • @wainber1
      @wainber1 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Woll this season had 2 injury stints, the 1st having lasted over 2 months while the 2nd lasted a crucial game during the Leafs-Bruins playoff series. Yes I like Woll but to rely on him to play 50 or more regular-season games would be foolish. TBD will be what goalie(s) GM Treliving will manage to go out and get. Maybe he'll re-sign Martin Jones but even that isn't inevitable.

  • @michaelkirkpatrick7483
    @michaelkirkpatrick7483 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Marner is not going to change, so they need to move him out, even though they will lose the trade. Leafs can't put together quality depth due to too much money tied up in the core 5. Treliving had the right idea with Klingberg for the PP, but 4.1M was ridiculous, even for just 1 year. It wasn't the goaltending or D that killed the Leafs in the playoffs, it was lack of scoring. Treliving was right, let's look at how Leafs are scoring their goals. They are also making opposing goalies look like brick walls. Connect the dots.. most of them won't pay the price to go to the net, or cause havoc/screens in front of the net.

    I think the biggest issue with the leafs is Auston Mathews. Way to selfish of a player. Look at the leafs record without him.
    They play much better as a unit without him. Game 5, and6 of the Bruins series for instance.
