    Jolly good analysis there Dr Cunningham.

    I have my 7900XT 4070TIS and 7900XTX. The shortage SHAM with the 5000 series, you need to buy a pre-build was obvious to me.

      You are well set with what you have. No need to upgrade with all that VRAM!

    Love fhe analysis. No shilling.. no hype.. no bs. Your approach to this is similar to mine. I have been flamed for saying it but am quite sure that the 5080 will be 5 - 15 % faster than 4080. Rt will be another 10% so coming up on the heels of the 4090. 4090 is a much better gpu across the board.

      Thanks. Yes, I try to avoid hyperbole or clickbaiting. I'm an academic afterall 😊Once the 5090 reviews drop later tonight I will reverse engineer the performance back to 5080 and I might do a follow up video.

      @LarkinCunninghamPhD 5090 reviews just released.. just a reminder to be careful on assumption. 5080 is half of 5090 but if we look at the scaling of the 4080 and 4090 I believe the 4090 has 60% more cores but only 30% more performance. I imagine the smaller die will scale better than the 5090 in games. Just a thought. Looks forward to more content Dr.

      @@christophermullins7163 Thanks for the heads up. I have watched 3 reviews so far and I will watch some more videos with specific comparisons between Alan Wake 2 and Indiana Jones. Spolier alert: I don't see any of my predictions changing.

    Got a 4090, to play with AI and other work related stuff, pretty happy, the 5090 won't be available for 2k in the EU anyway.

      What AI do you do? I have never done anything AI before however I have a Ti Super and. curious what I can do with it in terms of image generation and potentially video generation. What programs would be easier to get going?

    • @LarkinCunninghamPhD
      @LarkinCunninghamPhD  17 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Getting a 4090 is never going to be a bad decision. I nearly pulled the trigger on one for 2439 euro but went for a 4080 super to leave a few quid for a 5080.

      @maxlastbreath 16 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @ Not very familiar with image or video generation, I'm currently just messing with LLMs, particularly really enjoying deepseek-r1:32B, very easy to setup too, less than 5 minutes of effort but idk if it'll run well on a 4080 super, as it is 20+ gb, you can always run the smaller one deepseek-r1:14b

  • @ironhammer4095
    @ironhammer4095 17 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

    +1 for mentioning framechasers. The only real true upgrade is the 5090 which is for AI users. Look at the design. Small form factor with flow through fans. That's for AI users to "stack" 5090s together. $2k is cheap compared to their other AI card for $10k. 5070 5070ti 5080 are really just 40 series super super, with a boost in frame generation tacked on. Makes no sense to upgrade from a 40 series card. If 40 series cards are available and cheaper probably worth to get that if u haven't already got a 40 series.

    • @dlarkinc
      @dlarkinc 17 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Yeah, framechasers deserves some credit for calling out what is pretty obvious. That's a very astute observation about the 2-slot form factor. That didn't occur to me, but it makes perfect sense why they would make those compromises for the sake of stacking them. I was hoping for 60%+ more performance compared to my current 4070 ti in going to a 5080, based on the "rumours" that 5080 would be 5 to 10% faster that 4090. Where did those "rumours" come from, I wonder?

    • @ironhammer4095
      @ironhammer4095 17 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @lcg-channel seems to be general thesis that the underwhelming performance boost is due to the 50 series being on the same node as 40 series. Nvidia squeezed all the juice they could. 60 series i think will be on a new node so perhaps might get a bigger boost in performance.

    It will be fun to check back on this video once the likes of Hardware Unboxed have benchmarked to 5080 in rasterization, RT and Path-Tracing. What do you think? Am in in the right ball park or are you expecting more performance? Plus, would you consider buying a 4080 Super instead if price and availability are disappointing?

    • @henson2k
      @henson2k 16 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I'm upgrading from 3080 so for me 5080 instead of 4080 Super will make sense. And I care about raster and DLSS, RT and the rest not much. My hope is DDR7 memory which is faster and can give extra boost to raster but 5080 bus is narrower than 3080.

    • @stevenfritze9038
      @stevenfritze9038 16 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I think there is a reason they opted for the 999$ price tag instead of trying to do a price increase over the 4080 FE or the 4080 Super...

  • @e8root
    @e8root 17 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    I got 4090 with 1 year warranty for expected non-scalped price of 5080 in my country. Blackwell has better memory, RT and AI (PF8/FP16/etc the same as Ada Lovelace) and otherwise 5080 is more like 4080 Ti Super but with faster memory. Should be in some cases fairly bit faster than 4080 Super in games/situations which are memory bandwidth bound and not so much for pure raster. Big unknown for me is RT - is it faster in current games or does faster RT needs some API changes? Also AI - FP4 vs FP8 vs FP15 vs etc. are not apples to apples comparison and if AI workloads like DLSS SR/RR runs faster depends on if Nvidia will use FP4 models for Blackwell. If they use FP16 so the same model for all RTX cards then improvements from AI won't be massive. DLSS SR uses mostly hand coded algorithms anyways.
    As for me I am pondering if I should attempt to grab 5090 FE as I like looks of this card. 4090 I can always sell and for more than I got it.
    Availability will be so terrible I will probably quickly be met with scalped prices - in this case it will make more sense to just wait for 6090 and get 5090 for half the price - by this point 4090 should cost more than 3090 costs now - which BTW. I wanted to grab 3090 and sell 6900XT but prices were pretty bad. Now 3090's are 'cheap' but now I don't care.

    • @dlarkinc
      @dlarkinc 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yep, it makes sense to make for more supply of 5090 later or just wait for 6090 (which could also face the same issues of supply, though). I think you are right about the memory, RT and AI performance - there will be some games or workloads where the 5080 offers a meaningful upgrade, but mostly it'll be minor.

    • @christophermullins7163
      @christophermullins7163 17 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Raster will be closed to a 4080 super than 4090. Average will be between them. Best case games will be a few percent below 4090. I would 100% rather have a 4090 than the 5080.. unless you only do AI.. it'll be better and last longer and does not use more power while gaming.

    i have no idea how i stumbled upon this channel but i listened 40+ min to someone rambling about a GPU i will never buy and i enjoyed every minute of it XD.
    As someone living in the Netherlands i just hope i can get my hands on 40 series when the 50 series launches. they will probably inmedeatly will be out of stock, prices are going to skyrocket... etc, etc. basic launch of a new GPU.
    from what i am seeing the 5070 is the one i can afford (seeing the MSRP of €549). lets just pray regular people can get their hands on a decent GPU

    50 cards just really got new software that's why the price is the same but the 5090 these cards should be cheaper

    • @dlarkinc
      @dlarkinc 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yeah, it's mostly software, with tweaks to the architecture to make that software run better than previous gens. Raw raster is only scaling with more cores, mostly. 5090 should be cheaper for sure, but you can see why the cost scaled the way it did compared to 4090.

  • @03chrisv
    @03chrisv 17 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    The big improvement in memory bandwidth definitely helps in heavy RT workloads. In conjunction with more RT cores, in full path traced games like Quake RTX or Portal RTX the 5080 should definitely see fairly big gains over the 4080.

    • @dlarkinc
      @dlarkinc 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I agree that could be one of the scenarios where the GDDR7 memory makes a difference in conjunction with more raw RT power. I think for people into path tracing, 5080 could be a meaningful upgrade. It could be the only area the 50-series truly shines. Right now, 4K path tracing is difficult on 4080 with DLSS performance and framegen struggling to hit 60 fps with lots of latency. 5080 might boost up to 90 fps and largely solve the latency issue.

    • @christophermullins7163
      @christophermullins7163 17 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Yeah maybe. I suspect that the best showing for 5080 without framegen will be within a few percent of the 4090 but on average raster is more like between 4080 and 4090. If a 5080 is on the shelf for $1300 and 4090 is $1600.. I would get the 4090 personally.

      @@Maduxi88 That will be determined by 5090 real world / street pricing and availability. If it's crazy it might be difficult to get a 4090 below the original MSRP. Obviously work out price to performance versus 5090 and deduct a reasonable used discount.
