I remember walking into the breakroom at work and looking up at the monitor to see the cathedral enveloped in flames. I let out a moan of horror and my co-workers were startled. But not one of them was paying attention, and none of them knew what Notre Dame was, and they didn't care. It was just another video to them. That's when I knew I had to retire. And I did. I've been keeping track of the rebuilding since the beginning, and although I have always loved admired France, I now have a new love and passion for its people and they're incredible skill. Gardez le moral et la passion indestructible. Vous êtes le cœur du monde.

I for a text from a friend who knew I’d just been there, and I thought she was making a sick joke. When I looked into it, I was so distraught I picked up my daughter from school since I knew that, when the tears started, I wasn’t going to be able to drive. It ripped my heart out.

I live very close to Westminster Abbey and on that awful day in April, 2019, I went for a late night walk and stopped outside that majestic building. That day’s terrible events in Paris were heartbreaking and as I looked up at the Abbey, I was reminded of the magnificence of buildings like Notre Dame, particularly as the two buildings have many similarities. I thought about the great skills of the individuals who had designed those buildings, built them and maintained them over the years. I was and still am, very grateful that German bombing hadn’t damaged that Abbey. I am so grateful that there are still human beings alive who are so skilled in their craft and we must salute them.

I first visited Notre Dame Cathedral in August, 1989. As a Filipino Catholic, my visit was more significant because i was able to pray in a house of God in Paris, France. As well, marveled at the architecture and the art (paintings on the walls, sculptures, colorful stained glass windows). Hence, watching the footages on television when the cathedral was burning in 2019 was such a horrifying occurrence for me. This past Nov. 15, 2024, i was able to visit Notre Dame again. However, our tour group went there at night. So, i only took photos from the outside.
I commend the French people, the Parisians and all the workers, artisans, engineers, et al. who successfully restored this gem of a cathedral and a Paris landmark.

I love that they included a time capsule in the wings...a list of the 2000 artisans who rebirted this achievement of humanity. Imagine the reactions of archeologists, specializing in our present genre, finding this list and digging into interviews such as this very video, in order to educate our descendants about the initial fire, the politics of funding the repairs, the international groups of patrons and experts who was in alignment about one cause...restoring a touchstine for the French.

Having worked various trades from about 12 years old ( with my father and his brothers ) and spent most of my working life as a woodworker and done a few special design/build projects for churches , I can only exult in the credit given to these crafts people. They will remember this work all their lives. This happened for me on much less dramatic occasions - if you take pride in your work and are offered certain special jobs , it is a ' gift that keeps on giving'. As a devout non-aligned-religiously person , it was wonderful to hear the importance of the human factor emphasized.

Working in architecture and now as a construction manager. I have worked on fire restoration projects and now working on mega manufacturing and their complexities. When I think of combining into a mega fire restoration project; the complexity, costs, procurement, craftsmanship and all the unknowns the restoration team faced, I am awe-inspired by the results of the efforts of thousands. Those involved and France literally spared no expense. My son and I were in Paris 18 months ago, stopping to see Notre Dame and I look forward to visiting this historic building.

@@ianbertus1119with the greatest respect, while it has only a small population by comparison to France, New Zealand is not a poor country. I’ve worked there and visited many times and can testify that New Zealand is sophisticated, well run, very mature economy and the only reason that the Christchurch Cathedral has not been rebuilt its Government and people simply don’t hold this piece of architecture in the same way that the French view Notre Dame. Shame really, cause it’s a beautiful city on a really beautiful island and deserves a cathedral that befits the city.

I was in Notre Dame on Easter Sunday of 1982 on a high school trip and loved it. The Cathedral was the highlight of my time there. I am very glad she will be back serving the people. I really liked the Rector's words from about 15:30 onward in this video. Notre Dame is a Cathedral to the world.

This is truly divine, the sacred geometry, art, sound science and that to tuning the bells to F# consistent with Earths frequency, and the unified effort to create something sacred and inspiring. My son and I visited Paris and Notre Dame in 2018 and were overwhelmed by its beauty. The tour guide boasted that the cathedral was so well built that engineers have never found even a crack during periodic inspections over the centuries. An extraordinary claim - earthquakes, stormy weather, barbarian invaders, the Nazis? He assured me it was true. Invaders may have trashed other parts of Paris, but they left Notre Dame undamaged. In April 2019 my son called me to alert me of the devastating news - Notre Dame was on fire. No, not the local Catholic high school for girls. Not the university in Indiana. The majestic church we visited in Paris just the year before. Stunned disbelief hardly describes my feelings as I watched the beautiful cathedral burn. The tour guide's claim was my first thought. "Not even a crack" over all the centuries, yet I am now seeing the great church engulfed in flame, surely to be destroyed. May God bless the firefighters who saved Notre Dame. May God bless all who contributed in ways great and small to the restoration of this great cathedral to Our Lady, this great symbol of France.

The site carries spiritual and historical meaning even before Christianity from Gallo-Roman times and most likely even before that. Yes in the 1800s Notre Dame was almost left in ruin, but it was restored back then, in fact, the spire (that collapsed) was added in the 1800s it didn't have it before then (it had a bell tower spire). Incredibly one of the main reasons Notre Dame survived was that back in the 1800s they thought a fire could start in the roof and added protection to the building in case it did, it's the main reason the cathedral survived the fire.

I wonder, the fire in the church, April 2019, an omen of what was to come in 2019-2020? It's been a difficult 4 + years round the world. I'm glad the cathedral has been restored. Blessed be all the artists, builders, bell repair ppl, etc.

The single most important thing to remember is, while a building is being restored hire a night fire watchman. Yes, a real person is expensive, but rebuilding is far more expensive.

I don’t like reliving videos of the fire…as an American who visited the cathedral it made me cry and see them beings back that emotion…I’m not a cryer ( having only done that in public at my parents funeral)

It makes me think about all of the times we hear people say things like “we can’t do that today.” Yes we can, plus we can do it faster. The only thing stopping us is expense. We don’t follow the will of one person in countries that elect their leaders. Now it requires the “will of the people” to make these projects.

Great video! But WHAT did the voice-over say at 00:46?
"A monument restored identically to the cathedral designed in 1844" !!! NO !!! The cathedral was RESTORED between 1844-1864 - to repair the desecration and damage it suffered during the 1790s French Revolution. But the cathedral itself is Medieval! It has been modified over the centuries but it was originally built between 1163 and 1260!

May God be praised for such an excellent restoration. A minus is the addition of modernist art which is ugly.

Thank goodness the religious extremism that built that does not reside in our lives today.
And thank goodness it has survived , if we don't learn our lessons we are doomed to repeat them.
