begged Zach to fly out from FL to CA to do my garage... LOL! another happy customer... looks excellent! neighbor's are all asking about it. love the fact that you're hiring Zach as an artist. This has lower maintenance than real wood door as wood can warp, fade as it age. thanks again for the quality work Zach!
Just a minor critique; as I do faux wood-grain finishing also. I always make the grain of the vertical and horizontal stiles the same direction as the stile itself. I also separately wood grain each individual panel. This makes for a more authentic look as it has been assembled, not carved from a solid piece of wood. It does look nice though, and apparently you have satisfied customers.
"...not carved from a solid piece of wood." I was thinking about that, thank you for comment about separately painting each panel. I agree that your process would be preferable to me, but most people probably wouldn't even notice. I'm sure the overall effect is gorgeous either way.
there are 3 different methods of completing the faux look. most garage doors don't look like kitchen cabinets (too expensive if they do {for the general public}), this is a metal door, essentially, with a Faux wood finish, this is an excellent technique, as seen from the road, and passers by wouldn't know the difference. What makes this guy think all the wooden components run in the same direction ,I couldn't believe what I was watching , obviously a non thinker. Would you install interior doors upside down and pass them off as being correct ?
Zach, just realized you could be one of the Bridges brothers. Help! I'm doing my first professional gig and I can't find exterior glazes in Gallon sizes. You once told me what you use (it's from Europe?). Can you tell me again? Thanks, Happy New Year.

Yes, you do need to put a yellow or a dark brownish orange primer for a basecoat. If you want it to look like wood the only time you could go over gray is if you’re trying to do like a Driftwood color and then the glaze Hass to be gray as well.
Hi Jeannie These are the products I used to woodgrain garage doors. Benjamin Moore water base exterior satin ultras spec The glaze I use is faux cream from Faux Effects. The colorants are golden acrylic and faux effects trans oxide brown Hope this helps Zach Sent from my iPhone
Ron Mogab I did that type of work in 1997 and I use látex semigloss same color, and gel stain two colors ( first stain coat is the color he use and the second little more darker and I use graining tool, you can find in Home Depot, is really fun do this type of work. Ah the gel stain you can buy in Kelly Moore or Benjamin Moore, good luck.
@@ronmogab1799 I like to use exterior satin finish paint for the base, richmond bisque is a good color if you want to go with an oak finish, and I also use old masters gel stain with both a grain tool and a throw away brush, works well to mimic the wood grain. Apply 2 clear coats of polyurethane or oil base clear
This is a fast way to do it. but if you want to do it right you should of masked each piece and grained it in the proper direction. for instance the panels are ok but the 1x4 stiles wood be grained a different direction. but i guess this is fast.
Because the grain texture embossed in the door is completely horizontal . When you go vertical with the glaze the horizontal door texture shows through

Also some doors have the grain embossed into it. Which all runs the same direction.

Painting in a white shirt, now that’s confident
you should start with the top panel and work yoourself down, that way you don't have to worry about dripping glaze over what you just did

Obviously doesn’t know how wood panels are assembled. Stiles and panes are separate, grain would not be continuous.
Good video !!!
What kind and brand of stain do you use?
el bicho I don’t use stain, I make the color with ti it’s and glaze
you use gel stain for the glaze.
Mike F gel stain and glaze are two different things, I think he said his using glaze by poly, usually comes clear and has to be tinted
