    The CANT Z.506 Airone (Italian: Heron) was a triple-engine floatplane produced by CANT from 1935. It served as a transport and postal aircraft with the Italian airline "Ala Littoria". It established 10 world records in 1936 and another 10 in 1937. During World War II it was used as a reconnaissance aircraft, bomber and air-sea rescue plane, by the Italian Regia Aeronautica and Regia Marina, Aeronautica Cobelligerante del Sud, Aeronautica Nazionale Repubblicana and the Luftwaffe. The military version revealed itself to be one of the best floatplanes ever built. Despite its wooden structure it was able to operate in very rough seas. A number of Z.506S air-sea rescue aircraft remained in service until 1959.

    Another sadly overlooked Italian plane was the Savoia-Marchetti SM.79, arguably one of the finest torpedo bombers of WW2

    My grandfather was the pilot of a Cantzeta 506 and he flew missions off the coast of Malta. His plane was a reconnaissance bomber and had a machine gun on the top side of the fuselage. On one mission he was chased by four Hawker Hurricanes. He flew his plane very low using the sea to protect his underside and when he banked hard to the left, he put his gunner in direct line of sight of the pursuing aircraft. He shot down all four of them. His plane was badly damaged and he had to ditch in the Mediterranean where he was rescued by Italian fishermen. He and his crew survived and he was awarded the Italian Naval Cross for his bravery and skill. It's one of the best dogfight stories of the war of which you will never hear. One Cantzeta versus four Hawker Hurricanes? He should never have won that dogfight, but he did. I think Chuck Yeager would have said that one hell of a victory.

    The Americans and the Brits have never really given Italian hardware much credit and of course it was all part of the media posturing gained from the spoils of war. They did recognize the handling and balance of the Macchi series but never enough praise for the Fiat, Castoldi and Reggiane aircraft either. Even the German were wise enough to actually use units of Fiat G55 and various Reggiane's as well as drafting the Semovente (Ansaldo) 75mm medium tanks on the ground........and the Breda MGs were also quality designs. I have an article on folder somewhere detailing a test the Germans ran in 1943 between the Fiat G55 and an FW190 and the Fiat ate it at all altitudes !

    Agreed Steve and Michael - the SM79 was indeed the BEST Torpedo Bomber of WW2 and the Cant Z506 was the best floatplane - not the Catalina..........

    Funny how the axis gets a bad rap, but the allies thought nothing of shooting down red cross marked planes, and jet pilots in parachutes, but, they'll never teach that in school, will they?

      Either factions committed war crimes, it's our responsibility to ensure that our memories don't fade away. Italians did many war crime, especially in Yugoslavia.

    What, the Allies shot down hospital planes?! I thought only the Axis did things like that...🤔

    • @historyofitaly613
      @historyofitaly613  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, British pilots were used to do so. The british navy, when an italian ship was sunk, they didn't rescue anybody, and sometimes, they were shooting the survivors.

    Allied fighters shot down white planes with red crosses? How can you say that? Allies are sacred, no war crimes! You should revise your audio. The same goes for a bombing of a Dresden. Some will say that there are 135000 causalities, more than Hiroshima or Nagasaki but we know, thanks to Media, that there were only 35000. Allies are sacred, no war crimes!
