Selecting Shelving & Building an Indoor Grow-Light Station Basics: Starting Vegetable Seeds Indoors

  • I go over the basic of selecting the right shelving unit to hang your lights and build a grow-light station that meets your needs. The key is to really match the shelving to the type of lights you buy. The set up in the video helps me manage 300-400 seed starts. Big or small the principles are the same.

      Hi Gary, thanks for the link. This is helpful. I had a question about lights. Can you have too many lumens? I'm looking at one of the sets which is 40W, 6000K and 4100 Lumen. Its also a frosted cover. I jotted down a note from one fo your videos recommending 5000-6500K and 2000-3000 lumen value, but wasn't sure if these numbers could go higher and what would happen if so. Thanks for your input!

    I just bought a 5-shelf wire rack from Lowes for $69 on sale from $80. I put it together a few days ago. The bottom shelf for some reason for me was a pain in the ass. I ended up breaking 2 of those plastic anchors that snap together on the pole to hold the shelves in place. After I got the first shelf in place the rest was easy.

    For my trays, I just make a drawing of the tray in a notebook, and label the tray with a number in the front. Then I write what type of seedling I started is in each row. It works really good because tape, popsicle sticks and everything else I tried fades, falls out, or come off, but as long as I don't loose my notebook, I always know what went where. I don't even have to change the number. When tray 1(or 2, 3, etc) is emptied and I start again, I just change the date I started it in the notebook.

    Hi Gary,
    Thank you, I have learned so much already in a short time by watching all your videos!
    Now hope I can have a lot more succes this year (I started last year with some herbs and a few vegetables on my balcony with only small results)! Getting ready to do it your way this year!
    A bit more difficult to find all the supplies and fertilizers etcetera you recommend here in The Netherlands (Europe) but I'm getting there! I even found seeds for a AAS winner tomato variety 😉!
    Ps: I totally loved the metal rack when I saw yours and luckily found it at Ikea here. Those racks are almost the same (Omar), but you can stack those to twice the hight PLUS those have plugs for the top, maybe a small tip for you if you're not done yet replacing your other rack?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN

      This brand is 5 shelves but it is two pieces. You get 8 posts that have to be assembled to 4 posts. You basically build 2 halves. I bought a single 6th shelf that they sell too. It was actually cheaper that way then buying a 6 shelf system.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well thats just it. The light brand doesnt matter. You just want to find whats in your budget and meets the kelvin and lumens rating. A lot of the same lights are made by the same company under different names. Good luck.

    Hi Gary, if I have +6" tall peppers, how high should the lights be above the foliage to prevent burning?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends on the lights but if they are that tall they really are less light dependent. You could go, generally 6-8 inches above them with the lights.

    First of all, Love all your informative videos. I'm putting the same shelving unit together. What determines when you move the seed trays from shelf to shelf? I hear you saying 10-14 days for this shelf, then another 2 weeks on this shelf, then some go outside, some stay inside. Is it based on the size of the plants? This is where I'm getting confused.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. So really based on the height of plants. Just as the might touch a light I move to a different shelf OR RAISE the lights. Try and keep the lights a couple inches above the lights. When they are like 5 weeks old or so, they also can get by with less light. Sometimes I move them to a shelf where the lights sit pretty high up.

    I have a side question related to unwanted guests. How do you keep chipmunks and squirrels away from your vegetables? They ate every piece of fruit from my tomato and cucumber plants last year. EVERY PIECE!!!!! Obviously they didn't touch the Carolina Reapers, Scorpion peppers, or ghost peppers. Any advice that does not involve killing the animals? lol

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN

      Been doing it for 20 years. Lights always needed but the most intense light is needed at germination and about 10-14 days after that so the plants dont get leggy and lanky.
