    Hey Chrome - sorry about the crap you're going through right now. Here's something I saw done on Matt's Offroad. He had a rock climber he needed to get from Hurricane, Utah up to Portland. He put a call out to his subscribers for help to do towing rally with his Movar on a flatdeck. They set up handoff points along the way for a meet, and the next persn hooked on to it and drove it to the next destination. They had it their in 24 hours, and returned it with a new front end in the the same way. This could be an adventure, and get it to either Calgary or Vancouver. If you could get it to Vancouver, I believe you know enough people their to do tranny swap yourself.

There’s a few shops in Port McNiel too. Or if needed, there’s a guy here in Port Hardy that does boat/rv/moving etc and has a deck that can get you and the van down Island to your shop. Im also from calgary, van life dude and youtuber, I reccomend keeping it warm once its warm and doing it in one go, and try to leave your throttle in the exact same spot loosing speed on hills and gaining speed down hills. Try to avoid ever shutting it off. warm up cycles are your enemy at this point. that being said im not a tranmission repair guy, this is just what id do. In limp your drive will be at least one hour longer than gps says, if your near a parts shop pick up some friction modifier additive, that might help, call ahead to see if they have it.

    1) put some lucas lubricant in your tranny and try to drive it, drain some fluid out first.
    2) go get a U-Haul or whatever company you got up there rent a moving truck and a flatbed trailer and tow your home back to the shop.
    3) leave your home there and go get your shop van or the ambo and get a trailer to bring your van to your shop or where you can get it fixed.
    4) check out the ferry and see if they do standby, maybe someone canceled and hope you can get a spot on the boat for a ride back to the shop.
    Whatever you decide please be careful, just remember if you breakdown Cruz can't walk very far and l hope these options might help or give you a new idea, best of luck and we're all pulling for you 2.

    Wow Chrome you have some serious decisions to make. I agree with you on not trying to drive 14 hours away. Too far. Too risky especially with your dog. Maybe you are supposed to wait the 4 to 6 weeks to get into a local shop?! Or maybe have it towed the 14 hours away to the shop that will take it immediately and you and Cruise could hang at a hotel for a day or 2 while it's repaired?! God's mercy.

    I'd make sure he has ALL parts needed to rebuild it before heading further away from home. Can you find some dollys and a way home get your other van. Drive and tow your van back to your garage. There are many many parts to rebuild one. One part can put it on a scorching halt. Possibly someone near your garage can get access and drive your other van to you with some dollys and tow yourself back.

  • @lemonherb1
    @lemonherb1 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I don't think it's wise to drive your van to Calgary. If you can get a flatbed truck to transport it to Calgary, or go back to your shop and drop the transmission and put it into the back of one of your other vans and drive it to Calgary. Though you'd probably need to get someone to look after Cruise if you do that.
    Personally I can attest to being stranded between Merritt and Kamloops because the transmission on my cousin's van blew up. He ended up having his friend drive his Suburban and rent a tow dolly from U Haul to bring us all back to Edmonton. So don't risk driving your van as is to Calgary. The Coquihalla will likely finish off the transmission if you attempt it

    I been in a van about 8 years. This is the plan I have formulated. 1. Always have BCAA Premier which entitles you to a free tow of 320 kms. 2. Call an auto rental for a truck or van. 3. Call an auto Wreckers and get the best price. 4. Get the tow truck to drop you off at the auto rental. 5. Go back to the auto Wreckers and load up your stuff, this might take some time. 6. Start heading home all the while checking Marketplace and Kijiji for another van.

    If your into DIY, changing transmissions are not that hard, it's more scary thinking about it. Get yourself a nice roller auto transmission jack, put it up on all fours, you already have a creeper, you might need long socket extensions maybe. Just disconnect the bellhousing and roll it back to clear the spines and out. And most of all, you would have learned a WHOLE LOT that's the value of DIY. You have other vehicles to go get a transmission somewhere around Vancouver. It's great knowledge to have since your into mechanics.
