  • After recording my latest videos demonstrating the JP 8080, which featured mainly that turn of the millennium supersaw and uplifting sound that defined the era and made the 8080 so famous, I was thinkning that for my next video I wanted to showcase some harder trance music, though not necessarily "hard trance". The first thing that came to mind then was the german acid/trance/techno producer Kai Tracid, who also happens to be one of my all time favorite artists.
Kai Tracid stands out among other producers with a truly unique and personal style, with melodic arpeggios that are more on the rough and gritty side while at the same time being deeply emotional. Most of his music also has a melancholic and contemplative aspect to it, which I think is something that he has consciously built his brand around (look at his song titles and lyrics).
Now, Kai Tracid has a certain lead sound for a lot of his hooks that I consider to be somewhat of his signature lead. And as far as I understand he has explained himself that he made that sound using his Korg MS20, which is a legendary fully analog synthesizer that has been used by many artists so create some classic thick sounds.
Unlike the Korg MS20, the JP 8080 is a virtual analog synthesizer, meaning it is digital but aims to replicate the sound of traditional analog synthesizers. And of course the age old question is how do these virtual analog synthesizers compare to true analog synthesizers in term of the sound. Do they sound the same (or similar)?
So I transcribed the arpeggios from my five favorite Kai Tracid songs and sent them to my JP 8080 to hear how it stacks up against the originals. Now, I do not have an MS20 but I do have the mini version, so for comparison I decided to play them back on the MS20 mini and the 8080.
The question is; can you hear a difference? If so, which sounds best?

The korg’s sounds are the same like the music sound from kai tracid ❤
The jp-8080 is a little bit different but it’s not bad. I love the jp-8080 but for kai tracid’s music I prefer the korg.

Ms20 sounds best and close. But i would boost the higher frequency a bite... it sounded almost identical..

Even though the 8080 is digital,
anyone who has heard it knows that it retains an analog-like quality.
This is where the 8080 truly excels -
unlike products in the Virus TI series, which often feel entirely digital.

Dont know how the virus sounds but I agree 💯 about the 8080.

Virus C, TI, and PowerCore - I've been using them for 12 years and still can't find the feeling of the 8080.
The unique analog emotional essence of the 8080 is irreplaceable by the Virus.
      They are two different things.@@solaris9250

I'm actually surprised that they sound so similar. The JP sounds noisier, but it's not necessarily bad. The MS-20 filter though just chunks everything and gives it grit. I'm just surprised the MS-20 sounded as good as it did. (I have plenty of children of the MS-20, but my JP-8080 is in the mail and I'm far more excited for it)

8080 is a fantastic synth. It has given me so much joy (and still does). The Ms20 is also great and even if they overlap somewhat in the situations you can use them, they each have different contexts where they excel. Also I agree about the filter, that is one very audible difference.

Even through the YT compression, you can hear that the 8080 simply lacks the depth and reality that the MS-20 has.

There certainly is something extra to it that id hard to describe with words.

To be fair, it's no surprise that an analog mono synth is better suited for those patches.

Korg does sound super clean here but JPs can make an insane variety of sounds beyond crunchy supersaw, and the onboard multi effects appear to be off here

I actually liked the 8080 better for some bits as I thought it had more bass and was a bit punchier. But I might be biased since I own an 8080 and like it a lot - because it can also do awesome "The Mover" from PCP (Planet Core Productions) bass lines and is really easy to use.
