      @Julian Borges i was referring especially to how hilariously obvious moore's body doubles are in every action scene -- it's startling how clearly and easily you can tell, more so than any film i've seen. the horse trap and the paris car are chase are especially guilty.

    • @DreBourbeau
      @DreBourbeau 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Julian Borges moore isn't to blame per se, though his age clearly prevented him from doing anything approaching a stunt -- john glen and his editors just stopped giving a shit. but that's the joy of AVTAK: experiencing a kind of uncanny valley where we're led to believe "moore" is doing all these insane feats yet when the car gets cut in half in paris (for example) you can see the stuntman's face for like two seconds flat

    I was in the theater when this movie came out. The Beach boys song got a lot of laughter and a lot of applause. For those of you that weren’t there the Beach boys and early 60s culture was having a Renaissance in the 80s… it was right for the time. All I can say is you had to be there.

      Indeed, younger audiences often complain about things they find culturally weird, but Bond was always on the pulse regarding current trends. People loved that, just as they loved campy stuff in Moonraker or even Bond doing Tarzan in Octopussy. The mentality of the people changed. There was a wonderful innocence and simplicity back then. People were willing to forgive excess and just roll with it and laugh at it.

    This could’ve been a great finale if they acknowledged the end of the Moore era, and Bond’s age. Like if he has some trouble while skiing or fighting people, and gently rejects Tanya Roberts and asks Miss Moneypenny to dinner as the last line (but probably doesn’t sleep with her). Sure it’s not the typical Bond formula, but it would’ve been a great end to an era

    • @anonb4632
      @anonb4632 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Not bad ideas. 👍 I feel some of Moore's earlier films were getting too campy. This one at least was more realistic if any of it could be called realistic.

      Yes, I admit that every time I watch this film, Moore's age bothers me more and more. But I still find the film too amusing to be bothered by it. Maybe they should have come up with stunts that are more appropriate and believable. I would have liked that. They could have compensated for the lack of spectacular stunts with clever dialogue and some suspenseful scenes. Bond almost dying from a heart attack in Casino Royale is a good example. You can do great suspenseful stuff without crazy stunts. And you have a dose of crazy with Zorin. Him shooting everyone is a memorable scene. They could have made this film more realistic and sombre. But I like it as it is. I am fine with it. I never find myself feeling bored while watching it.

    Honestly, I know A View to a Kill is considered one of the least popular but I've always enjoyed it. From the insane performance of Christopher Walken and Grace Jones to the score to even that charm of Roger Moore, it's always been a guilty pleasure. However, I do think if this had been Daltons first Bond and the script more catered to his style, this would've been a lot better.

    There's some good stuff in this film. I like all the detective work that's going on. The plot, however dated, is still good. Walken and Jones are outstanding. As with Octopussy, if you put aside the campiness, there's a dark edgy streak in this one, especially with Zorin. Roger is fine as always, but I struggle to get past how bad he looks. This really should have been Dalton's first film. Watching him go up against Walken would have been cinematic gold.

    Worth waiting for.
    This is one of my favorite Roger Moore Bond films.
    As with most Bond films, there's something for everyone, even though there are some cheesy moments that are just plain bad.
    Tanya Roberts, despite her annoying screaming "James, James!" is a real beauty.
    Those eyes of hers are hypnotic.
    The Golden Gate fight scene is well done, with an ax being used by Zorin.
    Stacy somehow manages to emerge from a dirty wet mine, tumble out of a blimp onto a cable, and still has a dry, perfectly white dress and high heels on.
    What a woman, what balance.
    I would note that Bond doesn't kill the goons that break into the mansion because the shotgun was loaded with rock salt.
    For the 80's the plot was excellent as Silicon Valley was the hub for chip development and production.
    Lots and lots of memorable lines and scenes in this film.
    "Mayday will provide you with a drink."
    "So does anyone else want to drop out?"
    The poetic justice of Zorin falling to his death over water mixed well with the businessman being ejected from the blimp and falling to his death over the water.
    Moore was a bit too old, but I think he pulled it off well and ended on a high note.
    Well done review, as there was lots of ground to cover in this one.

      Roger Moore said that in his other movies to that several of Bond girls had mothers younger then him. He couldn’t stand Lynn Holly Johnson on For Your Eyes Only who was 21 and her mother was younger then him by several years.

First, that Tywin Lannister can be seen chasing after 007 in the snowy mountains of Northern Italy, and now that Ivan Drago is Gogol's bodyguard. And I've seen this movie too many times to count, and I never noticed!

      This film was Dolph Lundgren's first appearance in a movie. He was hanging out on set visiting his gf, Grace Jones, and the director decided to throw him in the movie. He shot Rocky IV later that year.

    I don’t think that Sir Roger Moore was old, the problem was that they intended to make a “young Bond movie”. If they incorporated a more mature bond with and older Bon Girl would be easier to watch this last Moore Movie. AVTAK is a good popcorn flick but if they gave us a decaying Bond just like Skyfall the movie would be fairly better.

  • @calderarecords
    @calderarecords 8 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    This film should not have been made. It sums Moore's tenure up though, as you begin to see him smerk, grin, & pout all the way through the film because he is just not comfortable with acting, & would rather just fuck about with humour. And the problem is, people don't react to danger & violence like that in reality, so his films seem very boring & dated. And this fact is highlighted even more once you compare it to the next, & imho the best performance of Bond in the entire series with Timothy Dalton.
    You kind of rushed this review a little towards the end, but I don't blame you! Most people just want it over & done with! Like Diamonds are Forever & Die Another Day! lol! Great review tho man. ;)

    • @scottknode898
      @scottknode898 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Caldera Records it’s not that shouldn’t been made, Roger Moore had intentions of retiring during Octopussy but decided to come back. Timothy Dalton was heavily considered to take over had Moore left the role before A View To A Kill started filming. It was after filming and it premiered when Moore retired the role of Bond and in 1986 Timothy Dalton took over the role when Pierce Brosnan couldn’t do The Living Daylights due to his contract commitment with tv show he was doing.

      @John Kelly I never like to impose competition as to the Bond title themes, because they are so far apart in terms of era, culture, tradition, & tastes. The "best" is something which always separates from the rest. However, I think the best has come & gone! And agree that this has a certain bombastic affect that the recent themes lack entirely, because there's too many people involved now.
      I will state however, that John Barry's sound has never yet been matched. His stripped down yet unorthodox brass hierarchy, along with his unrivaled strings motif still to this day sounds very defined, & set a standard which many have tried & failed to copy. Just listen to OHMSS/We Have All the Time In the World & you'll hear what I mean.

      DutchBondFan Credit where it's due mate, you're clearly a huge fan of the films and it shows in your reviews. Just one thing annoys me, yours subs, you deserve so many more. I've seen channels on here that are just terrible that have half a million subs, it baffles me because Bond is as popular as it's ever been yet you seem not to appear on people's radar.

    • @DutchBondFan
      @DutchBondFan  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Balti Pasta That is nice of you to say! To be honest i'm extremely happy about my subs and fanbase so far! Because they have been growing steadily. Before I started making Bond videos, I was doing videos on the GTA games. They were popular but up on recent years the views started going down, I was putting tons of effort into them for little reward. Lots of kids demanding a new video and sending me three word comments that made little sense or were offending. Bond has always been a major passion of mine and I couldn't be happier about the switch! I have gained around 2000 subs since, I see my videos discussed on several forums, I see people eagerly awaiting these episodes and they each get thousands of views. Of course there are channels out there with half a million subs like you said, but it's like starting a company and immediatly comparing yourself to McDonalds, it just doesn't go that way! I'm happy that these videos are doing as well as they do! And even though they each take roughly 30 hours to make, I never have a single doubt in my mind of why I'm putting so much effort in, because I just know I'll get a major rewarding feeling in return!
      Thanks for your comment!

      DutchBondFan Hey, if you're happy with how it's going then that's great. And thank you for the unexpectedly long reply, I won't take up any more of your time and I eagerly await the notification of your Living Daylights review popping up in the not too distant future.

  • @lukestrawwalker
    @lukestrawwalker 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    For the opening sequence-- you gotta remember, when this film came out "snowboarding" was a *really* "new thing" to most of the public at large... so like the water-bike in TSWLM or the gyrocopter "Little Nellie" in YOLT, or even the three-wheeler Bond stole from the security guard in the moon buggy chase in DAF, this was a really interesting and exciting bit at the time, and the Beach Boys music was appropriate for the time and subject matter... after all, in most people's minds, "snowboarding" was the winter equivalent of "surfing", and since it was new and all to most people and the Beach Boys craze was winding down, it made a lot of sense...
    *Poisoned* fish hook... but yeah, May Day could have easily shot him from the shadows without the elaborate butterfly thing... evidently someone saw this somewhere and decided "We GOTTA have this act in a Bond film!" and this is the best they could come up with to shoehorn it in... (or elsewise the hot chick singing to the butterflies was the producer's niece or something). I mean, it's a nice bit, but I just don't think this is a good fit for it and the movie...
    The glasses were supposed to be "polarized" lenses, which again was kinda new for the time, and allowed him to see through polarized glass that was otherwise totally black, or something like that. The lenses had to be round for them to work, since the lenses had to rotate in their mounts to match the polarization of the glass he was trying to look through... because of this they looked pretty "out of place" and not in any way stylish, unlike the sunglasses Bond wore when he told Domino her brother was dead in "Thunderball" or the "see through clothes" glasses in one of the Brosnan films...
    Why not have Felix Leiter?? Simple, because Chuck Li gets wiped out... "his body was found in Chinatown"...
    "So Bond being Bond goes after Zorin to rescue Stacy-- God knows why...." Two words-- dat azz... :) He hadn't banged her yet at this point in the film, and you KNOW he's going to at SOME point, so yeah, of course he's coming after Stacy... and he can't leave Zorin alive without a big showdown between them, so yeah...
    Anyway, another great review... OL J R :)

    I always thought that the Duran Duran theme was one of the most popular Bond themes if one of the more unconventional ones and I freaking love it too. This, however, is probably one of my least favorite Bond films. Only the wacky villains are really worthwhile in my opinion as the action is nothing special, Stacy is rather annoying, Moore is too old and the film is also a bit slow at times.

    Strange I used to think this was Moore's weakest bond film but over the years it's become one of my favourite! Oh and the theme tune rocks!

      It has weak points but there are other aspects that even it out. Great villains and it doesn't go way over the top campy like some of Moore's previous outings.

    May Day is awesome and Walken rocked it as Zorin. As you said, unsettling yet so different and it's all explained. If you're gonna go fully absurd with your villains, you gotta commit to it, and to 'AVTAK's credit, it does.

    Good stuff as always DBF! Just watched this one the other day, waiting for you review. A good Bond adventure, though flawed. Definitely two of my favorite villains. Mayday kinda turns into the weak girl for a moment after Zorin ditches her in the mine. "I thought that creep loved me" lol

    This is the most positive I've ever heard someone talk about this film. Still one of my least favourites, but now I understand a few more of the weirder scenes!

    this movie is weird and nutty and I absolutely love it! even tho it's far from being one of the best it's undoubtedly my favorite Roger Moore bond and the score is amazing!

    If the Screen Actors Guild awards were around when this movie was made, the stunt team would have been a shooin for the stunt team award.

    A view to a kill is one of my all time favourite Bond "pop" themes. Shame it's attached to such a weak movie and it's sad to see Moore leave with a very disappointing film. It's a lot of fun and the villains are wonderfully crazy but it's definitely flawed. Can't wait to see you take on the Dalton movies, they are my favourites!

      @@DutchBondFan If you do, can you review "Everything Or Nothing"? It's the only Bond game that has all of the original Pierce Brosnan Bond cast as well as being a sequel to "A View To A Kill"! It's even got Willem Dafoe as the main villain! I think of it as the unofficial official final appearance of Brosnan's Bond!

    They ought to show James Bond shopping for a Brioni suit in Vegas at the Wynn or shopping for a Aston Martin and stuff like that which would add nuance to his personal style. Maybe shopping for a wristwatch, or selecting a bathing suit from some hot sales lady. There is just so much that they've missed out on that they could have done.

    This movie gets a lot of negative reviews but honestly I think this movie is still pretty enjoyable and some good plot elements, yes Roger Moore was really showing his age at this point and yeah there are a lot of bizarre cheesiness but Max Zorin, the theme song, the action the final fight and Zorin’s craziness makes this more of of a highlight to it, probably the best parts of the movie, Stacey is yeah annoying but the action and the dangerous more tense parts of the movie makes it a bit more enjoyable and leaving you with some good things about it, it’s definitely not a terrible bond film
