So, it seems like Japanese buns tend to be bigger and sweeter but I haven't tried a lot of buns in China so I don't really know what authentic Chinese buns are supposed to be.
I've tried buns outside Japan but they don't seem to be so different from buns you get in Japan.
Either way, I can't really tell whether these buns on the show are Japanese or not. If they didn't say they are "Japanese," I wouldn't think they are.

None of the buns look or is themed remotely Japanese tbh. If the guy who made the 'katsu' curry just got rid off the curry, and slammed the katsu into the bun itself, it would at least have some semblance of Japanese-ish food, since katsu is a well-known Japanese food.

Japanese buns are no bigger than any Chinese buns. Their standard bigger buns are bigger than Japanese standard bigger buns. Bigger Chinese buns are big enough to be considered one meal.
I’m not an expert on either Japanese or Chinese buns, but in my experience I think Japanese meat buns tend to have more sauce whereas Chinese buns tend to have more vegetables. But this may vary from region to region, as well as catering to the typical demographic of the clientele.

@@littlefishbigmountain France is widely considered to have a culture of very high class cuisine, while British cooking is looked down upon by most of the rest of the world. Ramsay being a good cook (ie. praised by Uncle Roger) is therefore not because he's British, but because he learned how to cook from the French. That's the joke.
One could also point to how a lot of "cooking language" in English is taken from French largely because of how "classy" it sounds (puree, hors d'oeuvres, bouillon, croutons, entree, roux, even the word cuisine, and more).

I feel like more often people end up unknowingly calling Japanese stuff Chinese. Interesting why they decided to go with a somewhat more niche country but then still do Chinese food?

I was pretty disappointed with Japanese week. There are loads of great Japanese restaurant in the UK!

No this is wrong. Anything authentic Japanese can only be found in major cities. I'm sick to death of seeing counterfeit and misleading products everywhere. I bought a Final Fantasy 7 t-shirt and a Final Fantasy 8 Hoodie from an official retailer called Game. Neither of them have Squaresoft or Square-Enix labelled anywhere on them. In Asian food stores things that are supposed to be Japanese nearly all say "Product of China" on them in small print. There is even a "Chinese" store close to me owned and run by only filippino staff. If you want to see what Britain is REALLY like you need to venture outside of major cities. You will mostly find closed minded people and fake merchandise. I prefer quality produce and it's so hard to find that my only option is to order things online and import directly from Japan.

i thought the same. we can have a different kind of bun / bread every day of a month and just have to go a bakery. other countries don't know how to bake
@@Hallebumba of course they know how to Bake but every country has their own traditional Style of Banking. Some countries or cultures have Just starded using wheat flour and have a totally different approach. I also Like German bread and Brötchen, but crossaints, Baguette, some Kind of Pastries, etc taste Like shit in Germany. Try finding a good Macaron in a random bakery or decent crepe at a Weihnachtsmarkt. Good luck.

@@OLBarbok i grew up with "Bad" or "mediocre" crossaints. I only started disliking them when I tasted french Croissants. Sometimes you can be Happy with mediocre stuff because you Just dont know better and have nothing to compare it to and you grew up with a certain taste. And this applies to all Kinds of food in some way. Not everything you war has to be the best or Gourmet to taste good for you. Your taste palate ist not only Your Personal Likes and disklikes it is also highly influenved by the food and tastes you grew up with. Of course you can find good Pastries and other baked goods in every country, even of they didnt originate in your country. But only at certain places. And Germany has taken a few steps back in the last 20 years in regards of good handmade bread. And lucky me, they offer a lot more than just Crepes at the Weihnachtsmarkt.

Yeah we don’t care much for our food, so bland and boring! 😂 apart from my dad who loves roast dinners everyday, and British breakfast… give me Japanese food any day of the week!

Hah. I feel your pain. My mother's Irish and I just spent half an hour explaining to a group of Americans that no, Ireland is NOT part of the UK, and that yes, it is a separate country. "But the Queen still rules them, right?" FFS, NO!!!! Thank you, Yuta, and Uncle Roger too, for helping to educate people about the world outside their own borders. It's a big job, but every little bit helps!
As a half Indian person I have to say that I'm surprised they even managed to mix up India and Japan when South Asian countries are usually just kind of forgotten about when people talk about Asia, was a funny twist

In fairness to the show, the idea of the signature and showstopper bakes is for them to take the basic concept and make it their own. That’s why they use ingredients that you wouldn’t usually see in a traditional authentic recipe. There’s still plenty of other stuff they got wrong, though, lol.
I do agree with the idea, however, if I wrote a dissertation about quantum physics while trying to get a degree in philosophy then I wouldn't pass. You still have to be authentic within the 'Japanese week' limits, not turning into Chinese/Indian.
That is true, but again, what is 'Japanese' from the dish they created? The buns? It's from China, not Japan? I'll give it for the katsu curry bun, that one was the closest to a 'Japanese' dish, even if he messed it up.

During my trip to Tokyo last year, the first thing I bought in a Family Mart was some Nikuman (pork, beef and a curry one). So much sweeter and larger than any I've tried here in UK. Delicious! Oh and yes my Japanese friends all laughed at me because to them they are just a common snack but to me they were special 😂
Ahhh, man I miss the buns there!! I went to Kyoto last summer for a study abroad trip and would go to the local bakery and get their custard-filled bun.
@@FantasyWriter162 I'd love to visit Kyoto eventually. There is so many things that I miss from Japan, even small things like bottles of warm milk tea and coffee lol. There was a "Tokyo Melonpan" store next to my hotel in Shin-Ōkubo and they had this amazing strawberry flavour one when freshly made with sprinkled sugar on top 😋😋😋

Nigel Ng was on "Mock the Week" not long ago, and he did a great job. It was kind of funny to see him out of character, after previously seeing him as Uncle Roger.
Don't worry Yuta, I don't think you were too harsh at all. If anyone takes those jokes badly I think they should just lighten up and learn to laugh at themselves a little. Nothing wrong with a light hearted jab.

Yo Yuta, Paul Hollywood (the green gerkin dude) has a programme on BBC where he went to Japan and sampled various food. He was extremely impressed with the bakeries in Japan. I think that's where the idea for Japanese week came from.
I guess they should have made sure that the contestants know what Japanese cuisines/sweets/dessert like, or at least a proper idea of it, before letting them loose. I mean... "Japanese Week" with none of the resulting dish even looked like Japanese dish, or at least inspired by it... so disappointing. OK, exception for that 'katsu curry' bun, that one was the closest even if he messed it up. And none of the judges reprimand them too!! Like, at least a question : "So, the theme is Japanese Week, right? What is 'Japanese' from your buns? Or what Japanese dish inspired the creation of your buns?" IDK, something like that maybe? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
There is that "chuukaman" type of food in Georgia (Kartvelia) called khinkali and it's best food i've ever ate
The contestants are allowed to do any flavour, the only rule was that it was a steamed bun, which... Is Chinese.
I wish you reacted to the rest of the episode, the pancakes were a disaster, and the "Kawaii" cakes were interesting.

On the topic of fish sauce, while not Japanese, I have seen a few recipes call for fish sauce in shoyu tare for a few tonkotsu ramen dishes, but that was more for making the dashi. Also, in Sapporo miso ramen tobanjan is added in addition to shichimi-tougarashi. I hardly use fish sauce though lol.
Western country call it steam bun. My country (Malaysia) call it pau. Basically it's steam bun in chinese but we use it like it's english.
Also, In my country there are many types if filling in the pau. Common ones are kaya(coconut jam), red bean, pork, curry. It also can come in 3 sizes (small, medium and big). Usually the big one have pork in it because they need more space to fill it up with pork and eggs.
I've been calling it pau for my entire life that I just found out that it is not what other's call it around the world. Seems logical to call it steam bun because it is steamed to keep it warm.

@@FynnRosenzweig When was Japan 'shet on' by China? There were two abortive invasion attempts when the Mongols were in charge, but apart from that I'm coming up empty. China did, however, give Japan its writing system, vast swathes of its culture, etc.

Part of the issue is when westerners want to be involved in a new culture or take an interest in it because it’s fascinating... they get ridiculed and made fun of for being “Koreaboos or weebs” so it stifled any legit interests to learn

The buns they made, (especially the one without much filling) remind me heavily of the buns in the konbini while I was in Japan.
Super tasty, fluffy, not a whole lot of filling, but enough, and I ate them for dinner 3 nights in a row.
Obviously the flavors were more reasonable, but I do remember pork, curry, and a sweet beef, so they had more "authentic japanese" options.

But "dumpling" is a broad term & the technique of wrapping something in dough or forming a ball out of dough is so simple that there's a fair chance that they have developed independently in different parts of the world, much like bread did. According to some voices anyway & I choose to believe this theory, since for instance the Romans had a written down recipe for their simple dumplings in a book complied in the 1st century AD, so for it to be written down it must have existed for quite a while. But who really knows which theory is true, we don't have diaries from every person ever alive, so all we can do is theorize.

As a Brit who likes to eat some Japanese food, I'm confused. We have Japanese foods and ingredients readily available in our supermarkets, so I don't know how these people think Indian, Thai, and Chinese food is the same as Japanese food.

when they were cut the in half the buns looked exactly like mantou which is a chinese bun with different dough from regular stuffed buns. ironically they aren't meant to be stuffed at all (maybe why people on the bake off struggled so much.) they are just eaten plain with soymilk for breakfast.
of course we can never know for sure but mantou have a unique texture as for as buns go so i really think they used recipes for that here.
