    The more I watch your bow building videos, the more I am tempted to try and build my own bow.

      DO IT. I'm literally just trying from random decent planks I get out of wood splitting cleaning up yards.

    Thanks for this! I have a bow in progress I've been wanting to fire harden and need to build the form first. I know what I'm doing this weekend!

    i made lots of bows growing up in the country. Recently made 4 in a new york city apartment. No bench, no vice, no jig , just knife and hands

    I've been applying some of your techniques and have to say it's improved my bows. Just little nuggets here and there on crafting and carving.
    Bending too. Particularly on osage. I've recently come across some near me that's decent for bows.
    I like a primitive style myself so mine aren't as refined as yours. But I've been able to save staves that I'd otherwise had to stop and move on from

    I learned archery in 1968 at a YMCA camp. I made a lot of bows for fun usually from elm because it wouldn't break and I had no idea what i was doing. Arrows from river cane. I've learned more archery and bow building arrowsmithing from Clay than anyone else. A lot of error has passed away.

    I would really like to try building a bow. I doubt my ability to do so, but you are starting to make me think that I might be able to pull it off!

      Just go for it. Mess up a few times and learn from the experience. That's the way we all learn. ch

    Cool vid! I have some red oak and pig nut hickory im gonna work on! No shade bro , I think if you adjust your saw depth to the thickness of the material, With a sharp blade you should be able to cut that gentle of a curve without picking the saw up.

    Simple and effective as well as straight to the point. One question. Why not just use a jigsaw?

    Is there any correlation between your bow length and the form’s length?

  • @fulcrum789
    @fulcrum789 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well I got a 2x6 Ill be working with. And here I was going to use a "compass" with a string to get the curve. The way one makes lines for a home basketball court. I like the PVC method. Love the Humble way you taught us how to cut curves with the skill saw. I still remember when My dad showed me that. Thanks again Clay working on a bamboo backed Osage and also a red oak with bamboo backing I got the supplies from 3Rivers. Can I back set (after) I epoxied the Bamboo? I already glued the red oak but not the Osage waiting till I get the confidence.

    • @clayhayeshunter
      @clayhayeshunter  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, for a glued up bow, you’ll need to do the backset at the time of glue up. It’s the tension at the glue line that hat holds the shape.

    • @fulcrum789
      @fulcrum789 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thankyou. I'll make sure to do the Osage board bow correctly. The Red Oak may just have string follow then🏹🍀

    come to upstate NY and teach a class. I live in Alfred, NY. I imagine the hunters from this area would be very interested in classes offered. And there is just about every tree you could desire in these parts.

    Does it make sense to backset a bow and then add recurve

  • @malcolmcorbin2467

    Have a question hopefully maybe you could answer for me I recently purchased the hybrid longbow I was told to shoot under the knock was not getting much consistency so I watched one of your videos place my arrow on top of the knock and I can shoot straighter with more consistency my question is is the back of my arrow when placed above the knock is the arrow supposed to be higher in the back Lynn my arrow Shelf

  • @BowyerToBe
    @BowyerToBe 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a question. If you were to use the back set board and then use the jig for making reflexed tips would that make a recurve or could you not use both on the same bow?

    • @j.shorter4716
      @j.shorter4716 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I made a bow that was recurved on the tips and reflexed in a form along the entire length. So it can be done.

  • @Soviless99

    my first bow was like a 20 inch ash short bow. i reverse strung it and left it in my hot car and it had some back set that lasted a while. not the same as heat treating

    I'd love to see you do a bow out of a Whitewood like Hackberry, or elm. Also do you make many sinew backed bows? Pretty sure you did a red cedar but not sure.

    This may be a stupid question to you, but is it good for a bow to have backset as well as recurve?

    • @clayhayeshunter
      @clayhayeshunter  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Potentially. But that’s a lot of stress on a self bow.

    Claiming ignorance, when making those jigs, do different wood types accept greater curves than other types?

    • @clayhayeshunter
      @clayhayeshunter  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, absolutely. Species like yew and Osage bend easily. Some others, like eastern red cedar do not.

  • @gumbydizz3842
    @gumbydizz3842 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I made mine with a jig saw. Horribly un level and variable. Heat treated a hickory long bow and now the limbs have torsion and side warp. You live and you learn.

    Backset and Reflex ... aren't they 2 terms for same thing?

    • @clayhayeshunter
      @clayhayeshunter  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Backset refers to the entire bow. Reflex is just in the tips.
