  • Hey guys!
Today I did an oil change on my 2017 Prius.
    What you will need:
    5 quarts 0W20
    Oil Filter (04152-YZZA6)
    14MM Socket
    10MM Socket
    Socket Wrench
    Flat head screwdriver
    Floor Jack
    Jack Stands
Step 1, Jacking up the car:
This is actually quite difficult due to the low clearance of the car. I've seen people recommend using ramps, but all the ones I tried were too steep. So what I ended up doing was jacking up one side of the car in order to get a jack on to the correct jacking point, then placing the car on floor jacks. This isn't the official way, just a way that worked for me. Do at your own risk.
Step 2, removing the access cover:
Pretty simple, there are 3 10mm bolts, and it slides out.
    Step 3, Draining the oil:
** ONLY DO THIS ON A COLD ENGINE **
with an oil pan under to catch the oil, remove the oil drain plug (14mm) and crush washer. Wait until the oil is empty, then with a new crush washer (recommend, not shown), reinstall the drain plug and tighten it (do not over tighten).
Step 4, Removing the oil filter:
You will need a special adapter for the oil canister. Toyota uses a 64.5mm adapter. I haven't found these in stores and you will need to order one online.
    Step 5, Replacing the filter:
Remove the old filter and drain any excess oil from the canister, then install the new filter. You should hear it click into place. Next, replace the rubber gasket with a new one. To remove the old gasket, use a small flathead and lift it out using the notch on the canister. Put a little oil on the new gasket, and slip it in to the right groove. Then, reinstall the new canister, first by hand, then when you are sure that it is threaded properly, just the adapter and wrench.
Step 6: Clean up and reinstall the access cover.
Make sure that everything is snug and right, make sure nothing is leaking, clean up the components. Next reinstall the access cover by sliding it into position, then screw in the 3 10mm bolts.
Step 7: Putting in new oil
After cleaning up, lower the car from the jack stands. Make sure the car is on level ground. Then, remove the oil cap and insert a funnel. Then, fill up with the same amount of oil that you drained (should be about ~ 4 qrts). To check the oil level, you will need to run the car for a few minutes in order for the oil to circulate and for you to get an accurate reading. This is why it's important that you do not overfill the engine. If you think you did, you will need to drain the oil out and re-do this process. Otherwise, you risk blowing the seals.
After you ran the car and verified the oil level, you are done!

Protip - when you have a low car, keep some 2x4's about 2 feet long handy. Pull the front tires up on them and you have the clearence to get a floor jack under it with ease. I use ramps, same principle. I put 2x4's in front of the ramps to help the front bumper clear the ramp.

Does anyone know the part number for the oil access door panel? Mine either fell off or the dealership didn’t reinstall it after an oil change. Dealer quoted me $100, but they didn’t give the part number on the quote.

Where do we dump the old oil?

I take mine to Autozone, they let you dump your oil for free. Your local dump / recycling usually has an area to dump oil as well.

      Neighbor's yard...
JUST KIDDING! Some auto parts stores (Auto Zone, Advanced Auto) will take it and dump it in their recycle bin.

Check how much you got out first. It should be around 4.4 quarts (4.16 L). I recommend starting with 4 (3.7L), and work your way up, slowly.
      DO NOT OVERFILL.

You did a ok job, need editing. You are doing it anyway why keep saying pain in butt many times. Be professional, otherwise don't do it.
