I know he doesn't think most people have seen his efforts. But I really appreciated the work put in to make the dragons feel real and weighty. Trust me, I saw it.
It's a case of 'no one notices *because* he did his job well'. People would notice more *without* his extra work, because if would be too 'stiff/fake-looking'.
Yes everything need to blend even if it's less seen in the end, it's always nice to look at what you did and made it looking awesome without the effects.

Honestly it all comes down to communication between the two.

There is real lesson here. Often less is more. To much going on in a scene occluding or not can often reduce the core impact another example is that smoother animation don’t always is better. Sometimes a bit choppier animation that hits the key poses can be very powerful. It allows you to control on what is presented to the viewer
Agreed. Digital artist here, and there are so many things I can choose to spend 3-4 hours on each. For my own sanity and time, I have to check, or broadly put, 'communicate' with the rendering future me to make sure I'm not wasting my time on something that is going to be hidden behind the foreground.

Dude, it flipping matters though! It may be obscured but it looks so perfect because of the amount of work in it, because everything is already perfectly animated. I have to look to see it well, but I know if it wasn't there it would look like crap.
But those are details we can still notice. True, the actual movement is obscured, but the especially with the last scene, you can still see the impact of each bolt and it adds to the scene. Could absolutely have done less, but then it wouldn’t be nearly as impactful.

Ima be honest when I watched the movie the last scene where all the dragons are shooting at the big one the movement of all of it is one of the biggest things I noticed
I actually did notice the subtle jiggling when I watched this as a kid, even with the effects over it. It really makes you realise how big the fella is
the jokes are pretty good, my only complaint is that the source material audio seems a bit low compared to the audio edited in. my ears got assblasted at least once bc I turned up the volume on my phone to hear the video and suddenly the sfx were really loud

This is just like one of the animators for The Amazing Digital Circus, they properly animated Zooble getting disassembled by gloinks in a logical and smooth motion just to have it covered by cartoon smoke.
To be fair. The effort does reflect in the scenes. Even if effects covered it up the movements do come through and the hidden parts do give a lot of realism
As an animator... This is a mood xD The countless times i spend so long in a super nice moment only for it not to be seen or be out of shot in the part it is because of lighting.
when i was younger j actually noticed all fo these features and its what made me love the movie more. i could tell the animators themself were so passionate about this movie.
Im proud to say I've noticed those little effects, and i loved them when i watched the movie, it made it feel more alive, but definitely the effects did a great job of hiding the little details xD

It adds to overall finished quality even if some of it is lost. If you had a lazy animator who did a sloppy job on purpose because "gonna be covered by effects anyway" you know it's gonna look like crap.
