    Drewby and Yergy are taking an extended stay in Michigan this week to discuss the the tragic case of Cornelius Fredrick, a 16 year old boy that was murdered under the care of Lakeside, a facility for at-risk youth in Kalamazoo, while being restrained by 7 grown men. The offense that warranted the restraint that ended Cornelius's life? Playfully throwing a sandwich at another resident during lunch.

      @@TheMiseryMachine I've said it before and I will continue to say it. You guys are just amazing. I'm really blown away by how much you care. What's really horrifying, is the fact that not everyone DOES care. Shouldn't the way we feel about these issues be the same way everyone feels about these issues? I mean this is ridiculous, people get into social work to help people, and I don't know if it's because they didn't care when they started the job, or they just got jaded over the years, but these people need to be held accountable, and they need to be punished.
      Thank you guys.

    When I was 16 years old I was put into "the system" for running away from home due to abuse. I ended up in group homes. Fast-forward a few years, I ended up working with children in group homes. I've seen more than I can stand. I could tell you real stories for days. The reason I ended up working with children in group homes is to make a difference, even if it's just one person. I want to be who I needed in that situation but didn't have. I've read about this child and this place. It takes me back, not in a good way. I truly do hurt for every single one of these children who've been failed over & over again. Thank you for caring.

      I lived in a group home. I will confirm they would painfully hold me down for what it seemed like hours, just cause I said I was sad.. i got out of their hold with a sprained shoulder. Also has happened to me at the hospital, they tied me down that time.. just cause I said I needed someone to talk to.. I almost died there due to suicide. My parents kept sending me to these places over and over and over. Idk what I even did wrong except being suicidal and depressed for the abuse and rape I put up with through my life.

      I've lived in many facilities like that. I'm gonna explose them. They hit you, starve you, tie you down, they'll force medication in you (that'll give you horrid trips, they did this to me as I was tied down) they starved us, they let us all bully each other, they didn't care of one of us ran away, if I had a panic attack they'd scream at me. They were pretty much all that way. All I was trying to get was comfort after being abused my whole life and being kidnapped and raped :( They knew what happened to me but still did what they did.. I hope the human race burns.

      I've also been molested by other people in the group home and no one would do shit about it. (And they still knew what had happened) The group homes ran by the state are sick, disgusting and pure evil. They had shoved me down into a puddle of piss purposely as well, then locked me in that room with no bed, no blanket, nothing. Just a pure blank white room with absolutely both to do. They once threatened to strip me too.

    No that is NOT how you restrain a child! I was never fully trained on it in my job since it wasn’t technically required training by law. But we were taught that the safety of the child comes first. The only time we should be restraining a child is if they’re endangering another child. And when restraining, we are only protecting the other child, not ourselves. The child acting out can hit, punch, bite, or kick us and leave marks. But we NEVER leave marks on them. It’s the nature of working with challenged children. You will go home with bruises, but they will go home safe. And if you’re not willing to take that on, find another job. Some of the kids we worked with were disabled, some had behavior issues, some had troubled pasts. No matter what the reason, their safety comes before yours.

      EXACTLY!! I'm a nurse and I've worked in many niches including psych. Restraints are an extreme LAST RESORT. And we have to get a doctor's order to use them. We also have to cease use within 24hrs, the orders expire after that. We also never physically restrain patients this way, EVER! We get them to a bed, chair, or something of the like and use soft cotton restraints on wrist and ankles. Only when you get into veryyyyy extreme or criminal patients would you use anything else.
      You know what works at least 95% of the time? Simply using verbal de-escalation techniques. I've personally used restraints less than 5x and I've been in the field since 2007.

    Yeah in Michigan we have an abuse/neglect registry. Basically if you're ever charged with anything related to that you will not be allowed to work with children or in any type of care setting with adults. I don't know if all states have that, but that's a great point to bring up.
    They are messed up for not checking the registry. 💔😥

    RIP to this young man🌹
    I was in foster care for 10 years and went in and out of shelters, group homes, foster homes (45 homes at that), and several different psychiatric hospitals. In the hospitals I would cause a stir and would get restrained and they would forcefully pull my pants down or off completely and injected with Thorazine in my butt. There's been times when they would take all of my clothes except for my shirt and have me stay in the "quiet room" in a chair in the doorway. It's a mixed facility meaning males and females are in the same area during the day. Before breakfast/lunch/dinner all of the other patients and staff both male and female had to walk past the room while I had no pants and no underwear. My legs riddled with extensive self harm injuries were exposed and I felt so humiliated. Mind you I don't always have to be in there because of a fight or something but also to be monitored for suicidal thoughts behavior.
    There was this boy who was locked in the room for over 30 minutes. He had peed on the floor. While he was in there this girl acts out and so they removed him and then they pinned her to the floor in the room and rubbed her face in it.
    Moral of the story, these places that house several children and teens, either shelters or notoriously, group homes and hospitals, can be riddled with terrible staff. Their treatment of us cannot be monitored by loved ones as a privacy thing. They are only told about it after something bad happens.

    I know it’s easy to slam these “For Profit” youth detention facilities. They definitely deserve the criticism. However state run facilities have the exact same problems, some worse, some better. Weather it is our government or private companies running these facilities, clearly reform is needed. Youth services, in my opinion, is a far more pressing issue than adult correction/rehabilitation facilities. Just don’t assume because a facility is “For Profit,” that it is automatically a corrupt facility. State and Federal facilities can be just as corrupt. My aunt was living at a state run facility for adults with mental disabilities. She was abused in so many ways it makes me sick just to think about it. Just because the facility is funded with taxpayer dollars, doesn’t mean it’s all peaches and cream. Corruption runs thick, both private and public...

    • @TheMiseryMachine
      @TheMiseryMachine  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Your not wrong. My hope (stress on hope) is that if there were more government oversight, things could be better. Not perfect, but better. They cam take my tax dollars and spend them all on protecting kids that desperately need it, 100% The for profit model (in some cases, like the cases we mentioned), are nothing more than human trafficking.

    • @TheMiseryMachine
      @TheMiseryMachine  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Dorothy in the Poppy Field Drewby here, and you're absolutely right. I think there's problems in both sectors and I firmly believe both private businesses and government work together on this front because it greatly benefits both of them to have these facilities operating. I really think the only thing that could make any meaningful difference is proper uncorrupted oversight, but I feel very hopeless about any meaningful change taking place here.
      When both government and private business join forces for evil, that's a hard thing to undo because then you have an entity operating virtually above the law.

The owner and his family were former and ongoing mafia affiliations, and they were making millions of dollars off of these kids.I do have to say that these kids were BAD, you were constantly at risk for significant injury from these kids, as well as the other kids. After about a year or two we started getting a lot of mental health children or those with behavioral problems and we weren't allowed to touch them for any reason, there was a hospital police officer on duty who could restrain the child with the nurse and that was only for two hours at a time. So there are some strict laws in Michigan to protect the children it just seems that the employees at that facility (Lakeside) chose not to follow them.

    ive spent my teen years living in institutions and psych wards where restraints were often necessary to protect other patients or the patient themselves. never have i EVER seen someone be restrained by having someone sit on their chest. restraints were always done by fixing someones wrists and ankles, maybe knees too, and if absolutely necessary by holding their chest down with a hand. a lot of the things i experienced during that time of my life were horrible and injust but it still doesn't come close to what these kids go through. my heart goes out to anyone who lived/lives through this hell. you deserve so so so so much better.

    Hi Guys! I'm from Maine too! I live near Augusta. Love your channel. I just discovered it tonight. Yeah The Elan School always was interesting to me. Have you guys covered the cases of Nadine Atwood or Brianna Lopez. These cases haunted me. And I have many questions about both cases..

    I'm from Michigan and I was a troubled kid I was in facilities or lockup as we called them from literally a make shift lockup someone built in there garage and I was also in Children's Village which is where Ethan Crumbley the oxford school shooter was just at. Michigan is so far from caring about kids or anything at all. I was belittled by these facilities they took me to school in hand cuffs everyday and picked me up and handcuffed me just to make me embarrassed SA physical assault is a big thing and they will always make sure it's ur fault all the guards will back each other up it's a mess.

    REALLY need to look into Dozier School for Boys in Florida. It was a home in the 50s (closed now) and a few years back they went to do some work on the property they found around 50 BODIES buried on the property. It was horrific what these boys went through. They were disappearing and no one noticed.

    I'm genuinely surprised that Valley Springs Youth Ranch in Black, MO hasn't had an incident like this.
    The conditions there are the same, the staff they keep are often sadists and the place is isolated from regular monitoring.

    This topic really hits home for me me because my grandmother went to college for criminal justice and then dedicated her life to working at the children's farm home here in Benton county Corvallis/Albany Oregon. The thing that made it a big deal was before my grandma worked there. This sick sick man owned and ran the facility, abused tons of kids and finally got arrested and my grandma was a part of the new generation of reformed treatment after new everything came in. It was literally a huge thing here in Oregon. My grandma cared deeply about helping kids that didn't have much. She was at one point the main cook and activities coordinator at the kids facility, then later the more grown teens, that prepared them for helping them get their first apartments, drivers licenses, GEDs, etc. It was inspirational to see that there actually can be places that help troubled kids and aren't fully corrupt. It's sad how corrupt it was when that man owned and ran it. It's possible to look it up and find the case of the P word guy who ran the place but then I think got life in jail for how bad his charges were. Idk I don't know all the case but I just heard stuff about it growing up here. I hope the places in Michigan get a complete overhaul committee to come in and change and improve everything like they did here in Oregon awhile ago already.

    I think it's great that you two are spreading this information. People need to be made aware that these places do exist. And the motto "in the best interest of the child" is just words to DHS. What is most important to these people is the most money for their pockets. In My opinion

    I was listening while I was making some Christmas crafts. I really perked up when you mentioned the Elan School. That's where Michael Skakel attended after he murdered Martha Moxley. Go figure.
