    It's worth mentioning that EV speakers have much more punch and clarity. My 1965 Twin Reverb, much like your Pro, has a pair of vintage EV "Coffee Cans" in it, making for the best sounding 100 lb combo amp I've ever had the misfortune to carry and the fortune to play.

      I once carried a silver face twin reverb 550 meters in my arms. I had to get it home and had no other choice. Wasn’t a full 100lbs like yours, but still. Back was out for a long time. Even still I prefer tube amps.

      I had a Twin Reverb with 2 EV SRO (coffee can) speakers in it. Couldn’t crank it past 5 cause you couldn’t stay in the room with it. After 3 months, the speakers were sitting at an angle because they pulled the screws out of the baffle board.

      EV speakers are incredible, I got a first-gen sro and a mesa-branded 12L...they color the tone just enough to make it tasteful, but transparent enough to let your playstyle and the rest of your rig have some impact on your sound

    Two things: first, my main amp, and what formed my expectations of every other subsequent amp, for 35 years has been a Fender Twin Reverb. Tinnitus is real. Second, playing at volume with this kind of amp creates massive transients followed by quick decay but with “bloom” to the ambience created as you add more subsequent notes to the overall sound picture. It’s a kind of natural secondary feedback swell that we’ve all found pleasing since Clapton cranked his Les Paul through a Marshall JTM45. In the mid seventies amps like Mesa Boogies and Dumbles tried to emulate this through gain staging. The resulting effect is more sustain through less decay, evening out the transient with the subsequent sound picture and leading to the style favoured here and traceable right back to Larry Carlton and Santana. Clapton; all transient and rhythmic phrasing. Legato players; all smooth flow and phrasing using clusters to punctuate. Two different flavours. It’s interesting the role played by reverb (actual room reflection or artificial) in the first. if you listen to someone like Gilmour (e.g. the Time solo on DSOTM) it’s all transient followed by ambient bloom. Very dynamic. I think this is what impresses players when they play at high volume; it’s a “big” sound because of the way it fills space. You can get sustain at low volume, but it lacks dynamics and ambient effect. You get a greater focus of interest on the note events by both listener and player.

    • @Timrobrus
      @Timrobrus 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The DG solo from Time has tonnes of delay on it, that’s far more likely to be what’s causing the ‘bloom’ than the amp he is using

      I saw a rig rundown with Scott Holiday (sp?) of Rival Sons and he was talking about trying to achieve a "wide vibrato" like the older days. He spoke on how the tones from classic amps at volume are responsible for that wide vibrato. They had to control the guitar and the note choice and style was greatly affected by it. In my experience, that it makes sense. The volume produces all of what you talked about and thus as a guitarist controls or reacts to it the style and note choices are all a result of this interaction and we can all hear it.
      Listen to Cream live, Band of Gypsies live and on and on. I think it all makes sense

    I owned most of the Fender blackface line at one time. (when stores couldn't give them away) The Pro Reverb was one of the last to leave. It went just before the Vibrolux Reverb which is the best gigging amp of them all. The only one that's left now is my 1965 Deluxe Reverb. While it doesn't have the power of the larger models, there's nothing better sounding. (although a '65 Bassman and a Strat........that's a sound!!!!). That said....none of these amps on 10 is that great. Between 6 and 8 is the sweet spot.

    • @paulmichaelsmith3207
      @paulmichaelsmith3207 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Totally agree on all points, especially the Vibrolux for gigging. Have had the gamut of amps over the years, vintage and otherwise, but my '64 Deluxe remains my favorite. You cannot beat the tone. I let a brown early 60s Pro go at one point due to hard times, and that was also a fabulous club amp.

    The Fletcher Munson Loudness Curve as it relates to Frequencies and how they are perceived is something every musician should be acquainted with. "Sounds at or below 70 A-weighted decibels (dBA), even after long exposure, are unlikely to cause hearing loss. However, long or repeated exposure to sounds at or above 85 dBA can cause hearing loss." No matter how wonderful or glorious anything sounds, I would never trade my hearing for it.
    Some notable musicians who didn't take heed:
    Brian Johnson from AC/DC was advised by his physicians to "stop touring immediately or risk total hearing loss".
    Phil Collins essentially retired because of his struggles with tinnitus.
    Eric Clapton has shared his struggles with tinnitus.
    Neil Young has also dealt with hearing issues.
    Pete Townshend from The Who has been open about his hearing loss.
    Jeff Beck has experienced hearing problems.
    Bono from U2 has dealt with tinnitus.
    Sting has also shared his struggles with hearing loss.
    Paul Gilbert is quite open about his hearing loss - high-frequencies are now inaudible to him.

      This is why you should always use a low pass filter on modelers live, it just gets rid of all the crazy piercing high end that our ears are naturally more sensitive too. Also, as a musician it only takes a few weeks to get used to living with ear plugs in, and once you do that you can endure just about anything and know your hearing will stick around.

    • @NateTheMeh
      @NateTheMeh 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Newnodrogbob -6db per octave, and I set it down to like 2.5k~ish really you should use your ears to figure out what feels just right to you, above or below that 2.5k area sweep the filter till it keeps the sound clear but without too much piercing high end. This is for LIVE band volumes, you’ll absolutely be able to tell that it sounds more “amp” like when the roll off is dialed in right. I feel like when playing at home, we want more high end to makeup for the lower volumes. Good luck!

    • @NateTheMeh
      @NateTheMeh 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @user-ri3gh6yb5k I’m not quite sure if I agree about it watering things down, I’ve played over 100 shows at this point and I get just more into the music when I can actually hear and process everything else happened instead of it turning into a 100db indiscernible wall of sound. You just gotta train your brain with them in to perceive it as “loud enough”. The same thing allowed me to eventually use my phone at less than 20% volume once I convinced my ears to think That volume was adequately loud.

    Several have mentioned Twin Reverbs with EV SRO speakers. One of my favorite all time tones is on Phil Keaggy with the Glass Harp's Live at Carnegie Hall recording from 1972. He has said in interviews that he was plugged straight into a pair of "hot rodded" Twin Reverbs with SRO speakers, turned up LOUD. He also used to throw a big trench coat over the amp, or turn it around facing back, to tame the highs. His playing through the 70's was almost exclusively Twins, Deluxes, or Princetons, and it always sounded more transparent and natural than others' big distorted tones, and moved effortlessly from clean to overdriven, without ever sounding, flubby, fizzy or harsh to my ears. I think he must have kept the lows turned way down to achieve that. His trademark pickup switching and mixing, volume knob dynamics, and riding that range between clean to overdriven without ever losing the natural stringyness of the guitar is what I always liked.

    I have the 300w LF versions of those EV's in one of my orange cabinets and the 300w EV12L pros in my 1x12 theile cabs. Paul Rivera highly recommends the EV12 and EV10 for those high headroom fender amps and combos. To my ears, they have a low mid-range that feels ridiculously strong and takes almost any amp volume on 10. I like the pros for higher bandwidth @7khz vs all the other versions at around 5.5khz. On the other end of the spectrum those dual cone wicker speakers in the old magnatone M-14 combo amps are my absolute favorite for speaker breakup.
    You should ask Jensen to send you some 100w alnico blackbirds to try out in that that fender! Id love to hear how they sound in it. I've been gassing for them since they came out and no one has really reviewed them yet. Peace!

    That's some great guitar tone. That's about the maximum level of overdrive I use (sans blues driver). It kind of reminded me of what I shoot for often. The only issue I heard was that bottom frequencies (lo mids 250-600Hz) were a little too "loose" for my tastes. I bet putting a db or 2 around 1.5kHz and maybe a pinch between 4 and 5kHz would balance that a bit better.

    It doesn't sound that great to me. Obviously Fenders, and other americans have wonderfull cleans, but it always seems that guitarists want to have their cake and eat it too, by having that lovely scooped sweet clean, but getting a bit more drive. To me the results of pushing the Fender clean defeats the purpose of the amp, and that's why a whole industry ( dumble, mesa, rivera, various boosts and tube screamers etc) has grown around wanting the Fender amp to become a Marshall, but just for the duration of the solo, snd this compromises the basic design of the amp. Being used to the warmth of Marshall amps, I've often wished I could switch to a different sound for the cleaner rhythm parts, and at one stage switched between a Twin and a Plexi for exactly that reason. The Marshall sounds ill at ease trying to do that clean scooped but plummy american tone, and I'm sorry but driving most Fender amps to get a smoother drive tone doesn't work that well to my ear. In this demo, the amp sounded as if it was struggling to smooth itself out, and in the end sounded lumpy and a bit scratchy as it tried to do what it was designed to do, but sounded juddery and uncomfortable in its attempt to cruise into a smooth drive. At least it sounded harsh like that over TH-cam, so maybe it was better in the room. I believe part of the problem is also that the best drive tones are, to me, better played into a closed-back cab, and the unfocussed jangle was emphasised by the open backed cab in this case. But that's just how it seemed to me.

    Love me old school single channel amps with nice reverb. Can't go wrong with a Fender 🙂 You made it sound great Johnathan, really liked how you adjusted the volume knob on your guitar to show the clean up too. Rock on!

    Your sound and tone was perfect - the strat tone came through. Your modeling tone for lead playing just doesn't have the hairyness nor bite. Pick attack and dynamics really break through as do the pick up choices (bridge vs neck).

    Credit where credit is due: JNC sounded excellent here. What a full and inspired tone. The dude should record with this amp. Most of his fructal 6 toanzs are terrible.

    I’ve been using valve amps turned up loud with an attenuator for decades. It’s the best way to get a great sound and dynamics while avoiding tinnitus

    For as great as modeling is, there is still nothing like the real thing. I'm fairly certain you could dial this (the sound we hear listening to the video) up in the Fractal or Line 6, but it's still great to hear how this awesome amp can sound in all its glory.

    Having had the experience of cranking that amp like that do you think it will help you with trying to dial in that kind of tone with Helix or Fractal?
