John Mackey - The Composing Process

- The way John Mackey composes a piece is nearly as unique as the path he took to become a composer. Every work is a commission, which allows him to take a break between compositions. Hear how he conceives the structure of a piece in the manner an architect might design a building, creating its shape and nature before he ever writes a note.

I've watched this video several times, and so many times while watching, I get distracted by Mackey's amazing Soprano Sax Concerto! Haha! It's such an incredible piece!
It's been 6 years since I've played in any symphonic wind ensemble, and after countless compositions and arrangements for various other ensembles, I'm finally writing a symphonic winds piece for a publishing company. These interviews are very helpful, and with great production quality!
Glad you're finding them helpful, Adam! Best of luck with your compositions!
I watch this because it got my attention and interested in composing
You may enjoy other interviews in our Inside Voice playlist - lots of info about composing. th-cam.com/users/jwpepper1876playlists?view=50&sort=dd&shelf_id=4
All of the people saying this is boring crack me up. This stuff is gold for people who have been wanting to know this stuff for years...me!
It seems that the scores John Williams wrote for Hollywood changed the trajectory of lots of concert music and soundtracks
Im watching this for school but i still find it kind of interesting because im trying to make music too so this was pretty helpful.
Yesssss!!
Very interesting- nice interview!
Glad you enjoyed it, Darryl!
What’s the piece in the beginning I love it and my main instrument is soprano/alto but my this is my freshman year and I got switched to clarinet and I’m loving it and John Mackey is coming to my school in April.
I’m so exited
Hi, thanks for your comment! The piece is Concerto for Soprano Sax and Wind Ensemble - you can find a link to a performance in the video description. Glad you're enjoying the clarinet. Have a great time with the John Mackey visit - we'd be excited too!
I hate school they really making me watch this
Even though you had to watch for school, did you get anything out of the video?
Gotta do this for school but it’s soooo hard to watch it’s soooo boring
No it isn't.
It is 😂😂😂🤣
@Raimi Miller-Hoffman Okay, so comes a question: What constitutes, objectively, boring material? You're bored - does that mean this is, objectively, boring? I think your response to this detailed, insightful, personal, animated description of the creative process says more about you than the process or the presentation.
i dont think its too boring but the music in the background is distracting. Sometimes i think band can be annoying but I actually really enjoy beautiful band pieces so its interesting seeing how he does it.
It isn’t boring if you are aspiring to compose
