New DM here. Played AD&D as a kid back in the late 80s and recently got back into it. Started DMing 5e games for my kids. Having a blast and your videos are SUPER helpful as I try to remember all the little details. This video in particular really helped me figure out/remember the proficiency modifier math and how the saving throws work. Thank you!
@@dakdur1126 when an enemy has to save against your spell, it´s harder for them the higher your spell attack bonus (DC = 8 + Proficiency bonus + ability score bonus)
Hi all, Nick here. Sorry I didn't see these earlier! A spell attack bonus or modifier is used when you are targeting someone with a spell, typically with an offensive spell. Think Firebolt, Guiding Bolt, Harm, those kind of spells. The spell attack bonus is a combination of your proficiency and your spellcasting ability modifier. Because I am a cleric in this example, Wisdom is what I use to cast my spells, so it is my proficiency bonus and wisdom modifier. A Spell Save is when a target is attempting to resist a spell. This is made by the target of your spell. So for example if I cast Hold Person and attempt to paralyze them, I cast the spell, but the target has an opportunity to resist the spell. This is where your Spell Save DC or Difficulty check comes into play. This is calculated as 8 + proficiency bonus + spellcasting modifier (in my case using wisdom. Hope that all helps!
You must be a terrible DM. You just basically explained you have to “to hit” roll first for Hold Person and then you get a wisdom saving throw. You couldn’t even offer one single spell that has a “to hit” spell attack roll. How bout “shocking grasp!” How about “Melf’s Acid Arrow?” I just wasted 7 minutes of my life. How do I get it back.
Thank you You're like the only person to actually explain this online
This was so helpful so many other videos don't explan the how to get to your spell attack and saves modifiers. This explains it so well.
So glad this helped you!
Feel it 💯💯

Much appreciated for this video. Short, sweet, and to the point. You did what many other videos couldn’t.
New Group starting here, Boardgame Vets but PnP/DnD Noobs, this was by far the most helpful video about casting. Thanks!
This was so helpful, I really needed the specifics on how to get save modifiers and you're the first one to explain it 🙏🙏💯💯
This is exactly what I need it. Thank you so much!! ☺️❤️
thanks for the video!! i was really confused as to whether or not i had to make an attack roll for All spells or only specific ones.
Thnx the player hand book and the other videos didn't really explain it. It is in the player handbook on page 205 for every one interested.
Thank you!
Thanks, very helpful
Thank you very much! I suck at reading so this is a great alternative
very helpful. whats the difference to the pathfinder system?
Thank you so much
what edition is this?
Thanks.. good vid! :)
What equation is used to determine Casting Ability plz?
Hi there! Quick break down:
Spell Attack Modifier = proficiency bonus and spellcasting modifier.
Spell Save DC = 8 + proficiency bonus + spellcasting modifier
What is a spell attack bonus?
Your attribute bonus. As he´s a cleric, he uses WIS.
@@Edino_Chattino right but what is it used for, like when does the DM ask for it?
