It's also been a bummer to only have one ear my whole life for lots of other reasons, like, playing telephone growing up, I was terrible at it. But, I'll be ok, and I'm getting both channels in the earbud, thanks for your concern :)

    Thom Yorke on Street Spirit (Fade Out)
    "Street Spirit is our purest song, but I didn’t write it. It wrote itself. We were just its messengers; it's biological catalysts. Its core is a complete mystery to me, and, you know, I wouldn’t ever try to write something that hopeless. All of our saddest songs have somewhere in them at least a glimmer of resolve. Street Spirit has no resolve. It is the dark tunnel without the light at the end. It represents all tragic emotion that is so hurtful that the sound of that melody is its only definition. We all have a way of dealing with that song. It’s called detachment. Especially me; I detach my emotional radar from that song, or I couldn’t play it. I’d crack. I’d break down on stage. That’s why its lyrics are just a bunch of mini-stories or visual images as opposed to a cohesive explanation of its meaning. I used images set to the music that I thought would convey the emotional entirety of the lyric and music working together. That’s what’s meant by ‘all these things you’ll one day swallow whole’. I meant the emotional entirety, because I didn’t have it in me to articulate the emotion. I’d crack… Our fans are braver than I to let that song penetrate them, or maybe they don’t realise what they’re listening to. They don’t realise that Street Spirit is about staring the fucking devil right in the eyes, and knowing, no matter what the hell you do, he’ll get the last laugh. And it’s real, and true. The devil really will get the last laugh in all cases without exception, and if I let myself think about that too long, I’d crack. I can’t believe we have fans that can deal emotionally with that song. That’s why I’m convinced that they don’t know what it’s about. It’s why we play it towards the end of our sets. It drains me, and it shakes me, and hurts like hell every time I play it, looking out at thousands of people cheering and smiling, oblivious to the tragedy of its meaning, like when you’re going to have your dog put down and it’s wagging its tail on the way there. That’s what they all look like, and it breaks my heart. I wish that song hadn’t picked us as its catalysts, and so I don’t claim it. It asks too much. I didn’t write that song."

      @whydontmynameswork 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That fkn hurts. It hits exactly like Thom explains it. I could never see myself cheering to it being performed live but I’d def be in tears. I think I’d be in tears through most of the show because the despair hits home… even nearly 30 years later.

    Radiohead's an interesting band. They first came around in the grunge wave and made a name for themselves with "Creep", made a pretty lyrically deep album in "The Bends", and kind of ascended to cult status with OK Computer and Kid A. I think a big part of their appeal was that they were increasingly album-oriented in a musical landscape that was getting more single-oriented, they worked in social and political themes and concepts into their music in ways that were often up for interpretation. While some could listen to their stuff and say they take themselves too seriously, a lot of their music involves self-doubt, regret, embarrassment, yearning...so even if they did, those are things listeners can at least recognize in themselves more often than not. They were a band that had popularity, and didn't lean into the common pathways to fame and success (they weren't fans of how the music business side of things was changing), they did their own thing, and I think that got them respect, if not appreciation, from people who didn't necessarily even love their music. Their disillusionment with the music industry in a period where more and more folks were coming around to that perspective (the age of Napster and file sharing was just starting up) resonated, which maybe peaked with them releasing In Rainbows in a 'pay what you want' method. They'd set up a website for community members to pre-order tickets before Ticketmaster's bots and scalpers got their hands on them. Their music often reflected tensions and issues of the times in some subtle and sometimes not-so-subtle ways. All of this, and their pretty regularly shifting musical styles, got them the fanbase they've curated. They might not be the biggest innovators out there, but you don't have to be, the Beatles taught everyone that much about earning success and reputation.
    And that's nothing against the rest of the musical acts doing their thing back then. I love me some Madonna, Aaliyah, Destiny's Child, etc., but when one of Radiohead's most acclaimed and loved albums opens with "Everything In Its Right Place" (Kid A), it's pretty clear they're not aiming for the mainstream market, even if they often ended up pulling mainstream-esque sales since they were one of the few established bands doing what they were doing at the time. For people looking for full albums, musical experimentation, lyrics with a finger to the pulse at least part of the time, and a certain musicianship, there weren't a lot of other contenders. They kept at it while other bands in their era like Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, etc. either sadly fizzled out or failed to evolve their sound.

      @@concertino58 Yeah, jumping straight into Kid A isn't real recommended. OK Computer sets it up well. But yeah, I love Kid A from front to back, and I have a hard time recommending single tracks when both OK Computer and Kid A really are full-album experiences

    • @jameshannagan7830
      @jameshannagan7830 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No one realistically can compare to the Beatles but Radiohead really does mirror their career Radiohead evolved all through their discography and it's an amazing thing to go through it it's amazing how they changed their sound but it's still recognize able and totally them it's remarkable.

    • @fluffy_walrus
      @fluffy_walrus 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jameshannagan7830 I mean, I think the Beatles are put on a pedestal far too often to be warranted. I don't think Radiohead were as egregious or shameless in their approach to melding their influences into their own sound as the Liverpool bunch, and IMO their music is far more substantive and original in comparison (relative to when their music was released, at least), but yeah, I suppose there are some similarities to their career arcs in that they progressed from a poppier sound, to an era of experimentation, and came out of it with a more fine-tuned sound and approach.

    Super late but interesting perspective to share;
    Thom sings "This machine will, will not communicate". I've always inferred this as likening human "will power" to a machine/computer, in that it isn't an organic mechanism. Fairly deep and debatable subject in its own right, and exactly the type of thing I think Thom would write. But it's also easy to read into lyrics a million ways and have your own interpretations, that's the fun part! Radiohead is great, very expiremental and never sat in one box musically, very talented instrumentally, and one of the best singer/songwriters of the generation.

He expressed that the song gave him bad vibes basically and that he didn’t like to perform it at first because he felt like no one understood exactly how scary the song was. This became one of my favorites as I explored their music discography. I recommend listening to give up the ghost for the next reaction video!!

    I'm late but I'm glad you finally hit it. This is one of the most depressing and beautiful songs they've ever written and the music video is and was a technical masterpiece ahead of its time. This is the song that made me a superfan.. not Creep. The way the melody in the guitar riff is D, C, and B constantly repeating through the chord progressions and then Ed starts singing it in the background during the chorus takes me to another place. More more more:
    All I need

      Also I think you hit the nail on the head meaning wise and the chord progressions. The tuning is between E and Eb which happens a lot in the recording process especially in the 90s with the songs being sped up or slowed down while in studio.. good ear regardless. Its a fun song to learn once you get the picking pattern.

    People don't listen to Radiohead because they make hits, people listen to them because they like to digest their music and unwrap the unique instrumentals and meanings behind them. They are not a band to be enjoyed by mainstream tastes, mostly because the music is not easily digestible and it's highly experimental. However, fans of their music love to sit with it and vibe with it's unique elements. It's like deep poetry.

    the music video and the lyrics are quite in line, just not obviously so. in very simple terms, the narrator is suffering from a dissociative episode, a fade out, which is visually represented by the frame speeds being out of sync. but there are so many evocative elements i have yet to hear the same interpretation twice and hardly ever ones i disagree with.

    Cool effects with time and split screen in this video. This was from THE BENDS album in the mid 90's, can hear some of the oft compared MUSE comparison (particular on their first album SHOWBIZ (1999)), and some COLDPLAY singing style comparisons/perhaps influence which came after a little bit in this. HIGH AND DRY is also from this album.

    Their first really sad song, but too simple and obvious melodically to my taste, that’s why I tend to ignore it. Always liked their more deliberate stuff.

    To me the machine that can not communicate the thoughts and the strain he is under has always meant his instruments and recording equipment.

      Woody Guthrie famously scrawled the words "This Machine Kills Fascists" on his guitar in the 1930's

    oh gosh me again.. sitting between this and PorcTree is The Pinapple Thief. Try "All the Wars" about relationship breakup; lots of feels and super music, plus TPT do pure acustic versions :) Try th-cam.com/video/_lnnSENWu4U/w-d-xo.html they go for gas, she drives off. How could she leave me standing? This one hits me; how I miss my woman

    BTW the guitar is just tuned really flat... if you go an entire half step down, you’ve gone too far. I always just tune to his open high E since it’s used all throughout the pattern. Check out 2 + 2 = 5, Idioteque, or Electioneering.

    Stoked you reacted to this amazing track...wish you’d reacted to a live version though. I appreciate that the song sounds a bit more mainstream in its format but it’s really Thom’s singing that makes this so special. There’s still time....PLEASE check out this version from Glastonbury th-cam.com/video/nNu6A0D9VbI/w-d-xo.html
