In Ramin’s defense: I think there’s a difference between playing a role, and simply singing a song from a show. When he played ValJean, Enjorles, or Phantom, the number of times one sings those songs allows you to find all the nuance and emotion you are looking for. I’m sure if he were to actually play the Beast, the performance would really shine.

As far as I'm concerned, this song was one of the highlights of the streamed concerts. I don't want the same sound from Ramin when he is singing with his band, as I'd get when attending a musical show.

So, I love Ramin. His voice makes me shake my head in wonder almost every single time I listen to him and he's one of the few singers who can literally give me chills. BUT one of the things I've noticed is that he's just so much more dynamic when he's live. There's a stark difference between videos like this/his studio work and when he's in front of a crowd. He feeds off that energy in a way that just lifts him even higher than he already is. All of his albums and videos like this one feel more subdued and, if only because I have live versions to compare them to, I always find them a little lacking. They're beautiful because he's too talented for them to be anything else, but when he's live, he's magic.

By far he one of my top favorite performers! His voice is almost hypnotizing to listen to. Not to mention the man NEVER ages! You should react to Till I heat you sing. I think for me, that and his version of Bring Him Home are 2 of the best songs he does.

I was in a local production of Beauty and the Beast a few years ago and in my opinion this is one of THE most important songs of the musical. It made me tear up every time I heard it sung. It was an absolute tragedy that it was not included in the live action remake.

Hi Marc, I love this song, and your reaction. My take on it is, it isn’t on stage, so the emotion and angst you’re looking for would be missing. I think it is more of an album cover, rather than a stage cover. I’m like you, I love Ramin’s voice and his story. Thanks for your remarks. Be Safe and Be Blessed.

  • @UnBroken11100
    @UnBroken11100 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

Since you see the song a certain way, tinged with more anger, you want him to sing it that way. When he doesn't sing as you hear it, you start to nitpick.
The thing is, many of us hear it less angry. We hear it as him being completely without hope, but not angry since he voluntarily let her leave. He cared enough about her to allow himself to remain as he is forever. I don't think he'd be angry about that, just really really hopeless and sad.
So for some of us, the way he's singing fits more than the angry version you would rather hear. j/s

I’m late to this party, but I’d like to point out that this isn’t sung after he lets Belle leave. It’s when he frightens her and she runs off to the wolves in the forest. And I think some anger at himself for blowing things before he even has a chance is absolutely justified.

To me it feels like he’s trying to be in character but not able to fully commit without the context of performing in a full production. Not his best but he’s a legend, so certainly not bad by any means. Though I understand the want for more, this is such an effective showstopper, the lyrics and story demand emotion so effectively, if the singing isn’t showing that same emotion it feels alot more disconnected than other showstoppers in my opinion.
He would make a fantastic Beast though I’d love to see that!

So “Evermore” didn’t technically *replace* “If I Can’t Love Her”; it replaced the reprise. The two could coexist in the stage show.
However, in the animated film, they couldn’t figure out a good spot for the Beast to sing, so they kept his part to “Something There”. In the stage version, they still only really could give him two solos and the reprise of the second.
When it came to the 2017 film, the decision was initially to make a movie based on the stage version, but Menken himself vetoed the idea, because the film was given a three act structure that would leave “If I Can’t Love Her” at an awkward position in the film. He wrote “Evermore” to convey a different emotion-regret, knowing he let go his hope.

    • @musicaltheatrefan2k226
      @musicaltheatrefan2k226 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Okay, in my opinion if someone wants to keep Evermore in their production, they should give If I Can’t Love Her a softer ending (like Josh Groban’s cover, only with a crescendo on the final chord to emphasize the end of Act I), and transpose Evermore 3 semitones higher (It goes from B to D) to set things straight. I recommend using the set for the “Fight on the Tower” for the number, Evermore.

Ramin did apply for the role and didn't get it back then. During the (streaming) concert this is from he also admitted to never have seen any film version of the movie 😱
I do agree with your analysis, despite being absolutely in awe with Ramin. Maybe it's the concert setting out of quarantine, that adds to the lack of touch with the role and all the layers this song needs to go through to really click

I can understand each and every one of your concerns, but as a person who is listening to this performer AND to this song for the very first time, it came across as nothing short of beautiful and powerful, as well as tender and sad at the appropriate times. I suspect that an actual stage performance would have all of what you felt was missing. Still, your points were valid. It's just that they paled when the circumstances are different, such as mine being a first exposure to the performer and the song.

Alan Menken said, while this is one of his favorite pieces from BatB Broadway, he felt that pacing was good for the stage, but too slow for the screen.
My more pessimistic side also tends to think: songs can’t be nominated for an academy award if it wasn’t written specifically for the movie.

His voice is beautiful, but I have to agree with you once again (I'm a broken record), is it the Beast if we don't get an angry growl or two? Missed opportunity to really bring out the character. However, I'm dying to see this live!! And I bet a live performance from this talented man would prove impressive. I love all this Disney content you're making Marc! I love hearing Ramin sing this and I like your breakdown of what goes into the song both vocally and emotionally. One thing that’s bothering me though is that you keep talking about this song like it’s performed at the time when he lets her go, and it’s not. “Evermore” is, but not this. “If I Can’t Love Her” comes at the end of Act 1 right after “Be Our Guest” (and an aside, props to the guy who took a risk by ending the first half with this song instead of the one that always brings the house down when performed as tempting as that probably was, because ending with this works so much better for the show). Anyway, Belle has left the castle at this point, but he hasn’t released her. This is when she sneaks into the west wing, he scares her off, and she runs away. Immediately, he realizes he’s screwed up and this music starts and that’s where the anger comes from, because he’s just chased away his last hope and he knows it. There’s anger and despair in that last verse because he’s ready to give up after that. Then Act 2 opens with the wolf chase and he goes after her presumably because Lumiere and the others remind him how dangerous the woods are and she probably won’t make it out on her own. He’s still given up though because he lays down in the snow after defeating the wolves and gives her the chance to get away. And she comes back on her own. That’s why this song is so powerful, because instead of allowing Act 1 to end on a literal high note (who doesn’t love “Be Our Guest?”), it reminds the audience how bleak the situation is for the Beast, ends on a cliffhanger even if you already know the ending, makes them wish intermission would hurry up and get over with already so we can see the character progression, and carries over into Act 2 so emotionally the show picks back up at the same level the previous act ended. And I would love to see what Ramin would do with all this onstage because he always finds a fresh way to interpret a character.

Mark, I repeat…love your videos and when I don’t leave a comment, I feel I am failing to complete an assignment my musical theatre professor assigned.
OK…Karim has the voice that any vocal academy teacher would want. He was born with a beautiful gift. I imagine how much more he would achieve if he could gain more control and learn to analyze and read music. Damn! This solo of the Beast has always been one of my favorites. It is moving, powerful, poignant and the lyrics and music convey this as well as the Beast’s vulnerability and realization of the condemned life he may have live without Belle.
Anyway, I am with you in that I would prefer he didn’t scoop to "No beauty could move me." Would rather he land cleanly on the note. When I listen to Ramin, his voice envelopes/washes over me and I am totally immersed by his power particularly in his strong lower register. Damn again! Is he a lyric/French baritone or dramatic tenor. I lean towards the latter. He is beautifully supported by his accompanist who adds to the crescendo and climax of this performance. Ramin’s signature voice, acting ability and looks make him one of my favorites.
I continue to hope that you will seriously consider doing a video that is all about you and it wouldn’t have to be performance oriented unless it is what you decide. Thanks Mark and I will keep my fingers crossed for my much anticipated video.

One of the most interesting things about Ramin Karimloo is no note is exactly the same. There is a crescendo, a diminuendo, phraising, an accent, a slight change in the rhythm that makes his singing interesting and unique. It seems to me that you just wanted to hear it as it's been sung before and were not really open to a different interpretation here. That often happens when you really love a song. I, on the other hand, do not love this song that much. But I really enjoyed Ramin's version.

His voice is just stunning but this isn't his best song.

I think the piano turns down the perfomance too , you don't have that dramatic orchestation in the chorus , the orchestra makes it dramatic, the piano makes it sad

Every single person who dares to judge others should automatically deliver his own performance. I´d be VERY curious how this slimy "coach" sings.

i never heard this song before and I know ramin's voice is flawless. Once I know the context of the song tho, I agree with your analysis. I didn't feel the pain and sadness at all. From his performance, I felt like almost an arrogant somber in the character instead of vulnerability or pain.... despite sounding absolutely beautiful. May be he chose to interpret the song differently

I truly think this song makes or breaks the musical and I’m just not getting the emotional ride here as much as I want… though Ramin is a beautiful singer. For a concert version this is perfectly fine. I love Terrance Mann’s version and James Barbour does a gorgeous version too.

As always, agree with your take 100%!! He lost me on this one. :x I feel like he slid in to a lot of notes, chose a strange mouth-shape for some vowels, among a few other things. The last note was good, tho.

This version is why to pretty and recording artist. It sounds like he's making a pop album and not singing a gut wrenching musical theater number. It's beautiful, don;t get me wrong, but it needs more emotion. This is just pretty for the sake of pretty with zero connection to the song. It's as if he doesn't know what the song is about. This is usually what I see from him even in real performances.

I adore Ramine...but this is my least favorite version of this song. Listening to your review was so validating for me. I thought I was crazy

Wow. Ramin is a great singer. But I'm about to have a personal opinion...
The tempo was so messed with it felt sloppy and changed the dynamic for me. There were times it sounded like he was trying to channel Terrence ... But he's NOT The Mann. When he remembered to BE RAMIN he got everything so much better. But ...he just doesn't have what Terrence does. Definitely good. But something just threw me a bit.

I've never heard this song. Honestly, the song itself sounds very mediocre. Sorta like incoherent rambling, a mishmash of big words like "hope" and "love" and whatnot.

I've never liked Ramin. His Phantom was just an embarrassment. I just never understood his appeal. I was so disappointed in the 25th Anniversary, his Phantom was so cringe. Because of this, I can't enjoy anything he does. That + his fangirls.... its just meh. If he'd just sing without adding anything special (like in POTO 25th where he breathes after every word in Music of the Night ugh) he'd be fine... but he can't.
