    Hi! This is very inspiring. I'm a beginner, I work with copper and just started a piece in brass. I work the poor man's way...with plasticine , because I can't afford the set-up that pitch requires. So, less detail , more annealing maybe more patience, but I love it. You have just sown a seed of 'face' in my hobby. Thank you.

      Hi there Claude! It's nice to meet you! I hope I can help with your chasing journeys!
      It is true that pitch can be pricey, but it's a one time investment for most folks. Plasticine clay's should get you by for a while, I know a few folks that swear by it and a bunch of other options, I still favor pitch as I think it handles being a fluid easier and is still sticky and solid at room temp, I like that attribute to do larger pours into vessels and such. The working compositions are also a bit different, but so are different recipes of pitch. The important thing is to use what you have and push your practices. Use the best you have and focus on one battle at a time. Plus the Plasticine clay's can be very nice to sculpt in for studies so it's covering lot's of bases.
      When I finally bought my first 10lbs of pitch it changed what I could hope to accomplish over night. Keep doing what you're doing until you're ready, but when opportunity presents itself give it a test and see which you prefer :)
      If there's anything else I can help with to get you started let me know!
      Cheers!

      Thanks very much Kathy! I've got loads of video and photo's of that piece and the one I made following that one, here's a few: instagram.com/p/BnwFaJFHTdP/
      It's crazy to think that was back in 2018, time just keeps rolling.
      Something a little more recent and complicated is this one: th-cam.com/video/CQ4ZQnk3Bsg/w-d-xo.html
      Thanks again Kathy!

    Incredibly lifelike! I tried to make a face last summer in 16g, just ended up covering the rough parts with a big brass mustache haha.

      @douglaspryor  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Big mustaches are amazing for covering all sorts of things! hahaha Thanks man, yeah I'm a big fan of face sculptures. Human bias I think hahaha. Think you'll try a face again?

    Are Guildwerk hammers still made? Im extremely interested in the chasing hammer you designed and have been searching far and wide for any on the secondary market to no avail. You are an amazing craftsman!

    Beautiful work. How small mask you can make?

    • @douglaspryor
      @douglaspryor  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much! The smallest face I've made was maybe 10mm tall. I could probably make a smaller one but I would want to practice a little more first.

    Hello. I want to learn how to do this raising mask. How can I train? I have practice in handling intermediate level forging tools and techniques. Is it possible to do an online course? How much money does it cost?
    thank's.

    Hi Douglas, could you work it cold if it was less thick, say 0.7mm?

    • @douglaspryor
      @douglaspryor  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Working steel cold is an option if it's thick or thin. The amount you can influence the steel changes and damaging it instead of shaping it can increase. I do shape the thicker steels cold over the pitch. But if it's the first half of forming that you are trying to shape cold you will still want to anneal the steel periodically to reduce the stress building up in the material.

    hey! I'm new here, I was wondering if this process could apply to armor making? that would be a badass visor for a helm.

    • @douglaspryor
      @douglaspryor  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there! Thanks for the question! I used to make primarily armour so I can guarantee that this process works for thicker steels, though it comes with a little extra elbow grease needed for sure. I've made a number of face helms too though I'd love to take another crack at it with my updated skill set and tools. Check out douglaspryor.com to look through some of the armour I've made.
      Cheers and happy new year!

    Hi. That's really amazing. How many hours It would take you to make one of those ?

    • @douglaspryor
      @douglaspryor  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      To make a very nice one from steel I give myself about a 4-5days for all the forging and chasing. There are quite a few things I could speed up but generally that's where it ball parks.

  • @TheAssassin409
    @TheAssassin409 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    out of curiosity, how much would you have to sell these for? id no way be able to afford something hand crafted like that, but i can dream, right?

    • @douglaspryor
      @douglaspryor  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It represents about a week of work so that's about how much I ask for. They're not too unreasonable I think. Check out my website if you'd like to inquire about price, or I've got my last workshop coming up in another month and we are making faces if you'd like to try your hand at this instead. Thanks again man!

      Hahaha can my dungeon have a view? Nice windows? Good ventilation?

    • @LukeGeoDude
      @LukeGeoDude 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, everything to keep my slave healthy. By the way the face looks a lot like my deceased grandfather, he was a loud man, 2 meters tall, broad shouldered with a big mustache like that.
      If you don't mind my asking - do you sell these? Your website only lists tools for sale. Edit: Never mind, I'm listening to your interview and you talk about it there! It's an honor to behold your work, sir.

    • @douglaspryor
      @douglaspryor  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I do sell these, I love making faces and portraits, I make other works for sale. I don't sell any tools on my website, but I have good friends that are tool makers and direct people to them if they show an interest.
      Would you be interested in a face of your grandfather? I have another one like in the video already half made ready to be finished if you're interested. :)
