    Thank you SiRobb for another great "DIY-fixing"-video about the Volvo D5. The film helped me on how to loosen the serpentine belt so I could change the steering pump on my Volvo XC90 2012 R-Design D5 without any major problems :)

    Another great video from SiRobb. I had to take out the power steering pump and alternator to do this - the Torx needed tapping in as the splines were a bit rounded by a previous mechanic/owner. Not a big job but the moral support from this channel always helps - New alternator pulley and now have a very quiet engine! - Thanks again Si. Great stuff!!!

    Thanks @SiRobb for a great video. It gave me the courage to do it myself. Unfortunately, it looks like I had received the wrong type of tensioner. The car originally had the one with the bolt on the lower part of the tensioner, the replacement part I received had the lower bolt in the same location as the one you used in the video.
    Despite the differences, the replecament tensioner did fit, the bolts actually lined up perfectly. And I actually drove about 20 miles and it worked without problems. No noises and the belt runs perfectly.
    I will however change it to the correct part this weekend, to help me sleep better. :)

    Thank you Sir for your video, you are a lifesaver. First my idler pulley disassembled itself, and i used your video to swap it out. Then i changed the engine oil with your other video.

    Thanks so much. I got the wrong part from the store, they said it was the right one when they looked up the vin number. Morons. So i tried to find the bolt when comparing to the spare but couldn't find and then tried to locate it but couldn't. Then when i tried to find a video with the same tensioner model for the D5 there wasn't any. But then i found this, huge huge thanks you are a legend!!! Thanks thanks million times! God bless

    Hi SiRobb. Good advice, thanks for posting this vid. Funny thing, I found that my tensioner does'nt have a wee hole like in your vid. Then when I had it off, I could see clearly why that is. There is a bolt or something similar snapped off inside it. Beware the cannibals. Any how, its all good now. No more silly squeaky noises.

Now 2 years later I can hear the rattle again so will try to change the belt now first.

    Thx Sir Robb! I manged to change the tensioner during the weekend on my XC70 D5 2005 model, I did remove the front right wheel to be able to work from below as well, I would not have been able to locate the bolts to remove the tensioner without my special mirror. I also found it very tight for my big hands plus my 1/2 ratchet felt too big at times, hence it was hard to get it out after I changed the location after locking the tensioner with a nail. What kind of ratchet did you use? I recon small than 1/2 inch right? 3/8? If so the head would be smaller and giving you more space against the wall of the engine bay. Thx again for this video!

    Even though the engine code (d5244t) is the same this is for the earlier engines with the bolt through the bottom pulley (349808) the slightly later ones (349809) have the bottom bolt not going through the pulley and it's slightly lower down.

    Hi Simon. Trying to do this job today and found my low-profile socket wrench and T60 bit *just* won't fit in the gap to release the tensioner. Any tips - do you think mole grips around the T60 bit would suffice?

    • @antsprung4269
      @antsprung4269 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mole grips unlikely - Shorter or longer T60 bit? or try putting the bit in the hole first then clip in wrench. Using a short wrench I still needed to extend it with a bar to get enough torque.

    Hi, just got a V70 D5 163 and finding your videos most useful, I think I need to change my aux belt tensioner as there is slipping belt sound for about 2 seconds when taking up drive at low revs(its an automatic) first heard the noise when test driving at dealer, he had the aux belt renewed and the noise reduced a lot but still remains as I say only when taking up drive at low revs, no sound at idle or normal driving. Does that sound like my tensioner? or perhaps the alternator clutch seizing as in your other video?
    Also I noticed there is 2 variants to the tensioners, one without the idler pulley an one with, I'm wondering how you would determine which variant you need without having to disassemble everything to find out?
    Many thanks for taking the time to answer questions and create these helpful videos.
    Steve

    • @sirobb
      @sirobb  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Plutonia00 Hi Steve, The noise you describe sounds very much like the clutch pulley.
      The noise can be dulled by a new belt but the root cause isn't cured.
      You need to take the belt off and check it and you need to do that soon.
      As for the tensioners, one has a lower bolt that is hidden behind the idler pulley and the other has the bolt in clear view so they're easily distinguishable.
      Best done with the car jacked up and viewed from below or you can try a mirror and torch from above.

    • @plutonia00

    Hi @SiRobb have you got any good tips for changing the belt on 2011 D5, there is absolutely no way of making that much access room on my car because of the top motor mounting bracket. I've got the belt 90% on but I can't get at the tensioner to release the tension, I've been able to roughly check the pullies but I now I'm stuck..
    The belt broke last night, luckily nothing happened besides an alternator warning showing up. 😳

    • @sirobb
      @sirobb  ปีที่แล้ว

      Lucky escape so get everything checked. You may have the D5 version which requires shorter tensioner replacement intervals and it's failed or the 11 year old alternator pulley clutch mechanism is seizing.
      Pretty sure you need to support the engine and fully remove the mount for correct access for pulley and belt removal.
      At 11 years old, everything should be in good condition as everything should have been changed at 10 years so review the entire auxiliary and timing area.
      Good luck.

    done this today on my xc90 had to replace the top idler wheel/tensioner pulley thats upon fitting the belt it runs ok but the belt seems to be over to the left ive tried moving it back but upon running it puts itself back is this normal in this pulley dont want it slipping off

    • @sirobb
      @sirobb  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It should run perfectly in line like a sewing machine as you can see right at the end of this and my timing belt video.
      Any play will create uneven wear on the pulley bearings and belt and shorten their life considerably.
      To do the job properly, you always change the tensioner unit, belt and all pulleys. You never fit just the belt or just one or two of the pulleys.
      The auxiliary setup is on the same change schedule as the timing area so should ideally all be changed in one go.

    Hello! My 11 plate xc60 DrivE is in the garrage, the are struggling to get the correct tensioner. They've been told by volvo it will need modifying to fit now, apparently £500. Somthing about drilling the engine block as it would be a mechanical not hydraulic tensioner. Do you know anything about this? Any recommendations?

    • @sirobb
      @sirobb  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes Volvo experimented with different tensioners so speak to a parts expert. If you Google the parts department at FRF Swansea and quote Volvo forum code C3, they will source the correct tensioner version at a price that will be the lowest or close to. Have your full 17 digit chassis number available in case they need it. Hope everything goes well.

    Also, the car has done 107k miles & is a 53 plate, the timing belt was replaced in 2012 but only on 53k miles(it’s done approximately 6k miles per year) on the MOT history so although the belt has done only about 60k miles but is 10years old should it be changed?

    • @sirobb
      @sirobb  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You change the belt at 10 years or the mileage, whichever comes sooner so it needs changing.
      You change timing and auxiliary belts, tensioners and idlers and you may as well fit a new alternator clutch pulley as per my other videos and any belt wobble will be gone for the next 10 years.

    My questions is about the tensioner release at (4:05). Can't we just use 14mm to release tension? yes Recently my mechanic did change roller for timing belt side and he did take off the drive belt as well. But after installing the drive belt my Drive belt tensioner keep moving(back and forth) little bit even on normal running, so what exactly your suggestion is, we should not use 14mm to release tensioner? Kindly elaborate.

    • @sirobb
      @sirobb  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The tightening torque for the tensioner pulley bolt is 20Nm.
      If you tension the spring using this bolt, you will almost certainly put more than 20Nm through the bolt to overcome the spring tension.
      Over torquing any bolt is a bad idea but an especially bad idea on a drivebelt pulley bolt.
      That's why you use the dedicated T60 torx recess on the tensioner.
      It's been specifically put there for this reason.

    • @sirobb
      @sirobb  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      A bouncing tensioner most probably means your alternator clutch pulley is seizing.

      Steering pump pulley moving OK,
      Alternator Pulley moving OK but when move backward no sound but when I move forward very little click sound which can only be hear on deep observation.

    • @dalenhundepensjonat5781
      @dalenhundepensjonat5781 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes this is definetily wrong. Belt is upside down and nobody noticed. It will wear out in record time....

    • @sirobb
      @sirobb  ปีที่แล้ว

      The routing of the belt means both sides make contact with ribbed pulleys so both sides of the belt are ribbed.
      Some belts on other cars are only ribbed on one side depending on the individual design of the belt routing.
