Take it from me.... this bike is brilliant! Its so much fun. I bought mine new in january of this year and havent stopped customizing it since. You can do and change so much to make yours unique. But even left as stock its still great. Its a real head turner. The power delivery is always there. The clutch is nice and light and the brakes are enough for the weight/power of the bike. I live in the south of the Netherlands where we have plenty of hilly twisty roads (on the doorstep of the Ardennes) and the XSR700 just eats them up. This bike could quite easily be the first and last you ever buy as its has so much to offer. The only downside i will mention is the sound of the exhaust! Its way too quiet (for safety reasons). I swapped mine out for an Ixil SX1 full system and it sounds incredible. Not too loud but loud enough.
What makes it "ugly" is that damn radiator. On the Triumph Street Triple the radiator is really not noticeable unless you really look for it. Between the Yamaha XSR700 and the Ducati Scrambler, I think I would choose the Ducati. just saying
@@whiterabbitt2002 Agree. I think this bike is probably the best choice from a practical/ mechanical argument, but its kinda like your friend's badly dressed sister with head gear and coke bottles for glasses. Once you give her a make-over she's really something to look at.

Thanks for this great review. I was actually wishing for this as my very first motorbike, but sitting on it, it felt slightly too high for me. And when I sat on the MT07, which for me is the perfect height, I was sold on that one. Both are awesome bikes.
Thanks for a great review as always. Looking forward to watch you ride the 3 cylinder XSR900 next, compare them even. Of course the 900 is more powerful but that doesn't always equate to been more fun. As to your brake comments I've read somewhere that owners change to EBC HH pads which completely changes them for the better.
I was just watching the 900 video and when you rode up to the Spitfire it dawned on me that I had actually already watched it! Seems like I'm really tired or the misfortunes of old age are creeping in :)

Great reviews and still relevant 4 years on (I've just bought an xtribute) but can we clear up one thing. You will not get blown off the bike at 100mph or even 120mph. I am going to sound very old now but when I were lad no bikes (virtually no bikes) had fairings or deflectors. They were all naked. And back in the early 80's on my GSX750 or my XT550 I had no problem at all riding at over 100mph. My GSX could just about do 140 and strangely I didn't get blown off the bike. (All in another country where it was legal of course). Maybe the air was thinner back then? Who knows?
We're finally getting this bike in the U.S. for 2018. Considering my 6'1" frame and the fact that I've been riding super sports for the last 10 years, I think the XSR900 is a little more up my alley, though.
I currently own an xsr900 and am considering trading it in for the xsr700 when they hit dealerships in April 2018. Having owned many sport bikes, I can assure you you'll be immensely happy with The 900. I got my first taste of a loud twin just before buying the 900 and honestly that sound has me hooked. I may very well be trading in my 900 just for the sound of the unbaffled 700. Haha
I’m 6’ and have no problems riding it. Try it I think you will be surprised. I rode the XSR900 and really liked that too but for the type of riding I do the XSR 700 was the perfect choice.
I love the style of this bike, a wee headlight grill would add a finishing touch. Great review once again, with that price I bet itl be a popular option
Great review! Was looking at the T100/120 but saw this and was blown away with the superior performance and economy of the Yamaha. If it had a better flat seat for a pillion Triumph would have to get worried.
I think Yamaha has carved out the value end of new bikes with their MT/FZ range incredibly well. In Michigan we have Prius drivers, in TMF's world we have white vans. It's unavoidable!
First of all, I enjoy all your reviews and take the information as if it was coming from a specialist :) Very informative. I have been riding a 2005 Yamaha FZ6, and love the looks of it, but am looking to get a bike with more low end torque. I tried the Yamaha FZ07 (MT07) for about several minutes and felt that it was pushed by winds at highway speeds more than what I'm used to and the handle felt somewhat narrow. I have driven the 2016 XSR900, enjoyed the available power and upright seating, but the gas tank edge felt very uncomfortable while seated on the inner thighs of my 6 ' frame. I also tested a 2017 Ducati 797, but IMO felt that it needed to go fast and was not comfortable driving under 2k rpm, in traffic conditions. I also had issues getting into neutral when necessary. I never tried and look forward to trying a Triumph Street Triple 675 or newer, hoping it fits what I liked about the Ducati, XSR900. What would you recommend as your choice of motorcycle as a comfortable seating position great all-around, with power available from low through mid-range rpm? I am open to 2010 and newer models. Thanks in advance for your advice and all your great reviews.
Knew the MT-07 existed but have never seen this, this bike looks fantastic and I've fallen absolutely head over heels for it, this review I think has me decided on what bike I want lmfao. I only hope I can find a second hand one out there that I can buy and then restrict for my A2 license! Cheers!
Great review, definitely marmite as someone has already said. I really like it, it looks better in the non black spec to me. It's incredibly light and kicks out decent power and I love the aftermarket parts -check out the TEC exhaust George does for around £250.
Great bike and great review TMF. I want one of these now. Ha ha. Saw one of these in DRDs in North Walsham today and thought that it looked so good. Keep up the good work. Cheers.
Great review I looked at a new one off these just today in a red and white color fabulous looking bike and this review is spot on new in ireland 9000e unlike 6500sterling getting a spin on one next week looking forward to it
I recently got to sit down on a lot of motorcycles. And the style of this motorcycle is by far my favorite. So much in love. I’ll have to wait a couple of years to get it. My only gripe about it is the seat hight. Little too tall for me. But I was told it couple be ajusted by about 18-20 mm which is perfect for a smaller dude like me.
Looks beautiful, though I'm not so into its height. I prefer a slightly longer, sleeker stance. Can't stand that digital display. This kind of bike needs an old school gauge.
About a year ago, I was wondering if I should get the XSR 900 or 700. My previous bike was a knackered Yamaha Fazer 600 from 2004 which some scrotes nicked in London. Anyhow, long story short, I plumped for the bigger machine just because I thought, in for a penny, in for a pound. 12,000 Km later, I am not disappointed. I would probably get the 700 as my first bike because it is adequate for everything, looks good, and is fun,
I've just put a deposit down for one of these, albeit the LAMS (restricted here in New Zealand) version, as my first bike. I'm 5'11" and found the height to be perfect. Toss-up between this and the MT07. Black versions of each right next to each other, both looked stunning. Being a little long in the tooth, I decided the XSR700 was more my style, very close thing though. Thanks, as always, for a great review TMF...
I just test rode one of these yesterday at a Yamaha Test Ride Day here in Melbourne and I'm still grinning ear to ear. Very tractable down low, great pull in any gear and when you get up in the rev range oooh Boy you will be one happy Rider when you get yours. I'll bet you a beer you'll be laughing your head off in the helmet it is so much fun.
Same here. I love the bike, and your mention of the turn signal being “fiddly” is spot-on! With cold weather gloves, you’re gonna hit that horn every now and again. But no big thing-it’s a definitely a fun machine. Thx!
It isn't the most beautiful bike I've ever seen, but I like the mechanical bits hanging out where they are easy to get to. And you can't really see your bike while you're riding, which to me is the real reason for owning a motorcycle to begin with. I liked your comment about the mirrors; I was beginning to think I was the only person who hated those useless little angular pointy mirrors that so many new bikes have. Apparently people who wouldn't dream of watching a TV or using a computer monitor with a screen shaped like that have no problem with trying to see what's behind them on the road in a mirror like that.
Enjoyed this. Very few legitimate "reviews" for the XSR700. Most are just a quick walk around with either no information and terrible music or with the dreaded robo voice. Nice job.
the only thing is they changed the asymmetry on the petrol cap and lcd display from the xsr900 which bothers me way more than it should but i loved that bit of quirk on the 900 Great review as always
Another good review. I might be slightly biased; I got the XSR700 as first bike in June. Love it! I agree with most points- mirrors excellent, styling "retro inspired" rather than trying too hard. I'm not a fan of bikes covered in pointed plastic and straight lines. I quickly got used to indicator switch position (little experience with others anyway). On the front brakes, mine lifted rear wheel during lessons (emergency stops), so maybe demo bike needed to bed in a bit.
how does this compare to the triumph street scrambler, the seat on the triumph felt so comfortable! ? i'm only 5 7" so think the XSR is too high for me
I love this bike. However... Totally agree on the indicator switch, how did they not notice that tiny thing. I swear 3 mm more on the button would fix it. Or move it to sit on the left hand side of that unit instead of nested with the horn.
Good review, per usual. Maybe the front brakes were not seated in yet. I wonder how many original miles were on the bike. Looking forward to the next review.
Newport isle of wight. Often find me along the coast roads(when I have 2 wheels) It's a toss up between xsr700 and tracer700. Ones stunning, ones practical. Decisions decisions. Xsr700 the nicest in my opinion. But the tracer I think the mrs will be a little more comfortable on. 1st world problems hey. Love your vids especially the long term reviews. Thanks. Den
Hello TMF ! First things first, your reviews are absolutely spot on and very informative. Most of my doubts are cleared about this lovely machine. It would be really helpful if you could mention about the mileage and servicing cost for this bike. There are reports here in India that it's scheduled to be launched here in October / November 2018. I have two bikes in my mind - XSR 700 and Triumph Street Twin. Need your suggestion on both these bikes in terms of Mileage , Servicing Cost and maintenance. Thank you :)
The XSR900 would be the only bike to temp me away from my old Street Triple, looks wise. I'd have to stick with a triple engine if I traded up so as cool as it is, the 700 wouldn't be adequate. The burning question is, would you ride it to Scotland land? Also, who the hell is down-voting this vid?
I have xsr700 for 3 years already. I like it very much. But the paint cover is of low quality - very easy to scratch. Common problem: rust on the swing arm.
Yet another great video 👍 I know it's been asked in other comments regarding seat height however I'm interested to know if you could flat foot on both legs on this bike AND your leg inseam if you don't mind me asking as that's the important number. I'm 29.5 inches inseam so interested to know how that compares. Many thanks.
Loved the review and thank you! About the color, this is actually no "official" color, it's been customized, but it doesn't matter. The bike is wonderful and I love it.
"Tech Black" is an official color for MY 2017, according to the Yamaha website: www.yamaha-motor.eu/uk/products/motorcycles/sport-heritage/xsr700.aspx?view=featurestechspecs#gallery=color . It is now also available in "Brilliant Red."
Not pretty-pretty but still looks good in black - the rad and headlight blend in nicely. Less so in other colours but that wouldn't put me off. Suspect the soft front brake is set up to not surprise less experienced riders, but wonder if better pads might sharpen it up(?) Another good reviews - thanks.
The spongy brakes are a problem on the MT07 too from what I've heard, the fix for it is to replace the lines with braided lines which I plan to do to my XSR next summer. That should make them a fair bit more positive feeling. Although I find the ABS on the XSR very sensitive and it can hinder aggressive riding
Great review MSF. Strange how it doesn’t sound as though there’s as much wind buffeting as you seemed to get on the Enfield 650. Is that just down to the elements.
That totally depends on your experience with bikes, and level of maturity notwithstanding age. To put that in context I have been riding off road bikes on and off since 1995 but only got my licence at 40. I then started on an sv650 and imo it's as much a finisher bike as a starter. It could be one and done but from what I've read and seen on reviews the torque makes the XSR feel even more powerful. The sv650 had a racing class so either or both are amazing machines. I'm considering the XSR as my second and long term bike in a few years. Good luck with your choice bud👍
Great review, I really like the look and the different options and mods that can be done are a nice touch. Do you think this bike would suit someone that's getting back on a bike after 6/7 years without one ?
I just bought this as my first bike couple of weeks ago and not only has it been a joy to ride, but it's also very easy to ride. I came from a human powered Giant Road Bike :P. Cheers from Los Angeles!
Many thanks; currently riding a 2014 not ES but have done 31,000 in 18 months!. I love the bike and think it's good value, although have struggled with the weight on a few low speed occasions! Looking for my next bike so would really value your as always honest opinion; cheers.
I hear you on the Diavel tank comparison. Where the styling falls apart for me when you sit it next to something like a Monster, is the position of that headlight. It looks weirdly high up to me (same on the 900). There are definitely some other styling compromises resulting from basing it on the MT. it’s interesting that you thought it was tall. It LOOKS tall even if it’s actually of average height.
Not sure how things work in the UK, but in Aus we were always restricted to 250cc for learners and P plates. They have had a common sense transplant, now they have bikes up to about 650cc which are fairly mild performance catagorised as "learner approved". This bike is learner approved in Australia, assuming it is the same HP rating.
Darth Vader it’s not. The Aussie LAMS version has a sleeved bore resulting in lower capacity, and it also has restrictions in the air box and throttle, so it’s short of around 25hp compared to the version on test in this video (which is the same engine as the MT07 HO).
TheMissendenFlyer: Thank you for replying. Keep making these videos, they're informative and entertaining. Cheers Motobrother, rubber side down and stay safe in your travels. 👍
Good video thanks. How tall are you? Because i am short guy but i am considering buying this bike. But the problem is that there is no demo bikes in my country. I must order bike and wait for a week for shipping.
Hi MF, Really enjoy your 'real world' bike reviews, always feel as though I understand what you are trying to say about bikes. One thing I'd like to add is that in this XSR700 review it would have been useful to have an opinion on the different characteristics of this versus is its big brother the 900 to help people who are torn between the two. There is an implied similarity, but if there isn't then it would have been useful to know that also. Also, when you stop the bikes and run through the stats, there was no mention of weight for this or in the 900 review. Surely weight is very important and needs mentioning in 'hooligan' style bikes such as these

Great bike and great review TMF. I want one of these now. Ha ha. Saw one of these in DRDs in North Walsham today and thought that it looked so good. Keep up the good work. Cheers.
Might you do a 2020 update on this XSR 700, I think I prefer it, looks and weight wise, to the new Tracer? Good review BTW. Pete
Great review I looked at a new one off these just today in a red and white color fabulous looking bike and this review is spot on new in ireland 9000e unlike 6500sterling getting a spin on one next week looking forward to it
Love that bit of road!!!!! One of my regular ones! Nice bike too. Keep up the good work
I recently got to sit down on a lot of motorcycles. And the style of this motorcycle is by far my favorite. So much in love. I’ll have to wait a couple of years to get it.
My only gripe about it is the seat hight. Little too tall for me. But I was told it couple be ajusted by about 18-20 mm which is perfect for a smaller dude like me.
It might just be that the front brake needs bleeding. I am wondering if I made a mistake getting my Street Twin...
Looks beautiful, though I'm not so into its height. I prefer a slightly longer, sleeker stance. Can't stand that digital display. This kind of bike needs an old school gauge.
A set of wire spoked wheels, high mount akrapoviç and an upside down golden fork would make a huge difference 😁😎
Spoked wheels can make anything look better!
I would probably get the 700 as my first bike because it is adequate for everything, looks good, and is fun,
Seen one of these in the flesh yesterday and loved it.. thought I’d check the reviews and see if it performed as good as it looks..
Great stuff, thanks as always! This is a serious contender for my first bike.
What are the gloves that you’re wearing please?
love your reviews mate. keep it up!
Thanks - will do!
You're very welcome SonOfHenry and congratulations on the new bike! ....enjoy
Paulaus - just got my bike... I owe you a beer, possibly two... :-)
I wanted to let you know, your videos helped me purchase a xsr700. most vids have wheelies and no practical info for day to day riding. cheers
Brilliant - thanks Roger and ride safe!
Same here. I love the bike, and your mention of the turn signal being “fiddly” is spot-on! With cold weather gloves, you’re gonna hit that horn every now and again. But no big thing-it’s a definitely a fun machine. Thx!
Another good review. Like the XSR’s, especially the 60th anniversary 900. You got the nod cause your not on your GS!!
Exactly!
I like it,just wish it had twin analog clocks to add to the retro look.
Brilliant review as always TMF.Many thanks!👏👏👍
It isn't the most beautiful bike I've ever seen, but I like the mechanical bits hanging out where they are easy to get to. And you can't really see your bike while you're riding, which to me is the real reason for owning a motorcycle to begin with. I liked your comment about the mirrors; I was beginning to think I was the only person who hated those useless little angular pointy mirrors that so many new bikes have. Apparently people who wouldn't dream of watching a TV or using a computer monitor with a screen shaped like that have no problem with trying to see what's behind them on the road in a mirror like that.
Lovely bike great review as usual miss.
Thank you!
Great review, thanks for posting it! I have to say, the XSR700, RnineT and Street Triple all seriously make me want to learn to ride bikes!
What's stopping you Gareth? Go for it!
Enjoyed this. Very few legitimate "reviews" for the XSR700. Most are just a quick walk around with either no information and terrible music or with the dreaded robo voice. Nice job.
Thanks Patrick - appreciate the kind comments - TMF
I own one and the engine is pure fun. It's strange but mine sounds more aggressive with stock exhaust
I just got one, I love the stock exhaust.
the only thing is they changed the asymmetry on the petrol cap and lcd display from the xsr900 which bothers me way more than it should but i loved that bit of quirk on the 900
Great review as always
Another good review. I might be slightly biased; I got the XSR700 as first bike in June. Love it! I agree with most points- mirrors excellent, styling "retro inspired" rather than trying too hard. I'm not a fan of bikes covered in pointed plastic and straight lines. I quickly got used to indicator switch position (little experience with others anyway). On the front brakes, mine lifted rear wheel during lessons (emergency stops), so maybe demo bike needed to bed in a bit.
+Warwick Yeah I suspect you’re right Warwick, thanks for watching and for stopping by - TMF
how does this compare to the triumph street scrambler, the seat on the triumph felt so comfortable! ? i'm only 5 7" so think the XSR is too high for me
I love this bike. However... Totally agree on the indicator switch, how did they not notice that tiny thing. I swear 3 mm more on the button would fix it. Or move it to sit on the left hand side of that unit instead of nested with the horn.
Yes agreed....
Nice bike, looks cool but for me it's not a competitor for the T100. The blue Triumph you had and reviewed was a stunner, I want one.....
Good review, per usual. Maybe the front brakes were not seated in yet. I wonder how many original miles were on the bike.
Looking forward to the next review.
Yes you may well be right....
Plus, I believe the break lever is adjustable, which for some people is enough to make the difference.
Fab video! Love the xsr700, and am looking to pick one up, thanks in part to this vid. Cheers bud
Den, isle of wight
Where on the island are you?
Newport isle of wight. Often find me along the coast roads(when I have 2 wheels)
It's a toss up between xsr700 and tracer700.
Ones stunning, ones practical.
Decisions decisions. Xsr700 the nicest in my opinion. But the tracer I think the mrs will be a little more comfortable on. 1st world problems hey. Love your vids especially the long term reviews. Thanks. Den
First to respond. Awesome Yamaha Review! Keep it up
Well done and thank you!
Looks thrown together in a Mad Max ratbike style, but with modern reliability. I like it :-)
great vid mate....The white van sarga reminds me of Mr Bean and the Yellow Robin Reliant ....lolRide safe and I look forward to your next adventure
Man, you are a reviewing and video editing Machine! Great job!
Tell me about it!! :0) ...and thanks....
I'm sure it's a good bike but looks wise I much prefer the Triumph street twin.
It's a mess
The new Ducati 797 might be a competitor. That’s a similar bike in that price range. The Yamaha is a nice bike.
I have a 32" leg - does that help?
+EddWolf78 Thanks for the feedback Edd
Thanks for the response, keep up the great videos :)
Great review MSF. Strange how it doesn’t sound as though there’s as much wind buffeting as you seemed to get on the Enfield 650. Is that just down to the elements.
I don’t know - different helmet maybe?
very informative as always, thank you
Considering this for my first bike. What are your thoughts for somone new to bikes on this?
Love the 'Phantom' tyres
Another great review thank you Sir; any chance of reviewing the Super Tenere please?
On it's way - stay tuned
Many thanks; currently riding a 2014 not ES but have done 31,000 in 18 months!. I love the bike and think it's good value, although have struggled with the weight on a few low speed occasions! Looking for my next bike so would really value your as always honest opinion; cheers.
It just hit me, you're the David Attenborough of Motorcycle Reviews. lol
Wow, great praise indeed, thank you...
Great review. In future reviews any chance you can test the flexibility of a motor. E.g. Can a motor pull from low revs / mph in higher gears?
Yes, I should think so (if I remember!)....
I could pretty much hear the eye roll with the “uughh and there’s the white van...” bit haha
Great review as usual thanks again for your time, please keep them coming. Regards...
Will do!
Love your reviews. I even watch the ones of the bikes I'm not interested in.
Thank you....
I think it would be so cool if they made a racer replica with this twin and the 900 triple.
Mr Flyer... Get your hands on a new Super Tenere... Would love to see your review before I decide to buy an ADV bike.
+Mike Adams Stay tuned Mike - Super Ten review is coming!
Great reveiw, not sure about this one, what is it trying to be,modern, retro, cafe racer???
A wolf in sheep's clothing. ;) I reckon very few people would mistake it for a café racer.
If it's as good as the XSR900 then it will be a great bike and for the price fantastic!!!
At £6500 looks like alot of bike...... would definitely be worth considering.
Cool bike looks fun gona show my wife she looking for s retro .lol I have a rolland sands aircleaner on our bike rock on
Not sure how things work in the UK, but in Aus we were always restricted to 250cc for learners and P plates.
Good review for the xsr700! How would you say it would do climbing 1.22 kilometers above sea level?
+Mr Rose I would think fine, no lack of power....
Im5’8”
Great review as always! Glad this bike is finally available outside of Europe. What took you so long Yamaha.
Hi MF,
Really enjoy your 'real world' bike reviews, always feel as though I understand what you are trying to say about bikes. Surely weight is very important and needs mentioning in 'hooligan' style bikes such as these
Did I not mention weight?? I usually do...oops my bad!
