The Apple Watch Series 8, like most Apple Watches, comes in two sizes, 41mm and 45mm, but which size should you get? Well today I have both sizes to show you what they look like on my size wrists, how the operating system looks on each, as well as talking about the pros and cons of each size - to help you decide which is right for you! Apple Watch Series 8 41mm: $399 £419. Apple Watch Series 8 45mm: $429 £449. Small difference in price, but big difference in look and feel. First let’s compare the two off wrist, then on wrist and then look at how messages and apps look on each and then I’ll share my final thoughts. Right away big difference in size. 45mm noticeably taller and wider. 45mm is slightly thicker, I estimate around 20%. Not insignificant, 41mm easier to slide under the cuff. Same size digital crown and side button. 41mm: 32g. 45mm: 39g. Let’s talk bout how each sizes wears on the wrist. I have 155mm or 6 inch wrists in terms of circumference, measuring around the wrist. For me the 45mm watch case is only a few mm less wide than my wrist. Whereas the 41mm has a good cm or so of room to spare. Because the 45mm Series 8 has a bigger watch case, the band, rubber sports band, sticks out more from the sides before folding down and over my wrist. 41mm sits more flush. At the same time, having my arm on a desk sideways, neither watch is likely to hit the table, which is good. Feel the difference in bulk. Combined larger width, height and thickness. When moving my wrist the 45mm is more noticeable. Where the 41mm is more unobtrusive. Also with longer sleeves, the 41mm is easier to tuck underneath or slide under the cuff if you wear a suit. At the end of the day, this does come down to personal preference. If your wrists are similar in size to mine, both work but I do think one looks best. For me that is the 41mm version. It is more proportionate. Looks more like an elegant timepiece than a computer or a gadget on my wrist. Ok so if the 41mm looks best, does the 45mm have any advantages? Well yes, larger display. With more pixels, it can show more text and menus at a given time buttons too are bigger and that makes it very comfortable to use. Scrolling through settings, menus are slightly bigger on 45mm but still very readable and usable on 41mm too
Now I want to compare a email, here you can see first both a clearly readable, the Apple Watch does a great job at formatting text to be legible. But 45mm text is a bit bigger and you see more of it. Shown even more in messages. Where the text is bigger on the 45mm and the message bubble is wider and thus shows more text per line and lines on screen at a time. The larger UI on the 45mm is also good if you have seeing difficulties. Important to remember that both the 41mm and 45mm versions have the exact same features and same performance, even battery life is the same. 41mm more comfortable to wear and looks more proportionate. 45mm more even more comfortable to interact with. My advice, if your wrist size is 155mm / 6” or below go for the 41mm and it your wrists are bigger the 45mm may be best.

Tried both case sizes and altho the 41mm with the S/M band is the right size, I opted for the 45mm watch. Love the bigger and brighter, full display so much better. Thanks for the insightful video!

I wanted a bigger screen super bad but I knew smaller would be better because my wrists are extremely small. Best decision I’ve ever made! I went from the 44 mm series 4 and this is so much more comfortable, looks way better, and adjusting to the smaller screen was not hard at all.

Agree fully. Also, the benefit is 3rd party band sellers will now accommodate your wrist size every single time you buy. When I had the bigger case, it was not as freeing to buy other bands when the one length they sell assumes the wrist is bigger and may not fit even on the highest setting..

I have a 7.25 inch wrist and normally wear 43-46mm watches. The 45mm Apple watch looked great however I wear dress shirts and generally long sleeves where I live and the 41mm is more liveable day-to-day. If I lived somewhere in a warm climate where I didn't wear long sleeve shirts, I would absolutely opt for the 45mm.

  • @HeyItsKora

Anyone after some extra opinions, I ended up picking up the 45mm and I absolutely love it. I was worried it would be too big, but I got it on a cell plan and it was only 0.50 extra per month for the 45mm so it's so much more bang for the buck. My wrist size is about 180mm so I'm a tad above average wrist size probably just by virtue of being 6ft1, but I'm very lean built, I don't have massive arms/wrists, and yeah I am absolutely 110% glad I took a risk and went for the bigger size rather than playing safe and opting for the smaller. Also I think it might actually display _more_ content, not just showing the same content but with more on-screen if that makes sense. Earlier today I received a message on fb messenger of a photo and when I raised my watch to see the notification, it actually showed me the photo I was sent, whereas on my previous 41mm Series 6 I'm certain that photos were never shown in the notification preview for messenger. I think iMessage always showed an image preview but I'm sure it's the first time I've seen that for messenger. Could just be a recent update but it was still really awesome seeing a preview of the photo right on my wrist, and even though it's small, it was big enough for me to not reach for my phone to properly look at it.
My verdict is if you want the extra screen size, and your wrist is ~170mm or more, the 45mm is absolutely a safe bet. I don't find it to be clunky, I don't think it looks shocking because of the size, it doesn't get in the way of things like getting dressed or whatever, last night was the first time I slept with it and it didn't feel any different to my previous 41mm, basically other than the fact the screen is bigger, it may as well be 41mm for the amount of difference it makes. Could be just because I'm tall/big and have above average wrist size, but if my wrist/size are similar to yours, 45mm is absolutely win!

For me, in the end, I liked the bigger screen and it seemed no bigger than my 42mm series 0. Very happy. For reference, my “dress watch” is a 1929 Hamilton Coronado which is much smaller. New to apple I’ve been a die hard Samsung user. However, looking at getting the 14 pro max but first I would like to get the watch specifically the 8 series due to the extra health features it offers as I have just been having shortness of breath and irregular heartbeats. That’s why I am looking at switching to apple. Would love to win the phone to go with my new series 8 once I see which size would be best for my wrist. Which is what brought me to your video.

Unfortunately, I made a mistake 3 years ago when I bought the 44mm Apple Watch Series 4 - it‘s way too big for my wrist. Unfortunately, switching to the smaller model isn’t that easy since I’ve bought numerous bands that would all become useless given I’d switch to the smaller model 😕

i'm about to buy this watch in red. i was contemplating on which size to get because i really like the bigger screen but my wrists are small and i think it will look a bit silly and fat on me. i currently own an older watch with 38mm size and it's been a good size for me and looks great. so i'm sure the 41mm will be the best choice for me. lets hope :(

As much as I find your technology interesting , I challenge you to get into mechanical things, such as watches, or even quartz items. There is so much more to discover in the mechanical world! All the best and thank you for this video. ~Wendi 🌻

Hi Wendi, thank you for your comment! I have a deep appreciation for craftsmanship. As a side hobby I have recently been exploring the mechanical watch world, have my eye on the Omega Seamaster. The amount of components so meticulously put together, in a watch that is built to last and with good care can last a lifetime is incredible. It is unfortunate that this is something we do not find in the world of tech. I hope that in the future, tech products are built more to last and less to replace. This is why for me, longevity is a key area I look at when reviewing products. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts. Wish you a great day!

Thanks for the best review about SE2 !

Can anyone share if the screens on the 41 and 45 are supposed to be exactly the same (brightness, crispness) *except* for the size?
I tried on both sizes in stainless steel and the 41 looked noticeably dimmer. Store employees said it's because of the screen size but that sounds wrong? The difference in brightness between the two watches at the same setting was very noticeable.
    Thoughts??

I got the 45mm for $329 2weeks ago at Best Buy . Got as an open box. The product Red was locked and was not charged. Surprise to sale guy , and it was sealed but it was the silver one. Ordered a screen protector from Amazon and a magnetic band. Best Buy had bumper case only and sport band. I had the series 6 40mm. Prefer 45mm. Great comparison.

Hi Dave, that is complicated then as it so personal. My wrists are 155 mm and for me the smaller size works better, but with 183 the bigger one, in general, seems to me the more logic option. Good luck!
