    Hey btw there’s an easier way to get those 5 octaves without touching the voltage processor slider. The 2600’s keyboard has 5 C’s. Just tune the oscillators so that the “keyboard C” plays the required note, and there you go. You can play it across 5 octaves. 😎

    I’ve benefited from this exploration mainly because I didn’t know before June 28, 20204 that this song was originally performed by Kool and the Gang. Like other commenters, it was the Rocky soundtrack that brought it to my attention. I probably thought it came from the mind of film score composer Bill Conti.
    I also will tell you that my ear gave me that it was played on an ARP synthesizer, but I did not stop to consider that it might have been the 2500. My logic should have kicked in at the sound of the fifth octave. It might’ve been different if the 2500 had not been eclipsed as of 1975 by the 2600.
    I love it when Marinelli makes that point about needing to run from the filter to the attenuator, or else the sound will constantly be on. That is a lesson I learned objectively when I got my own first Arp synthesizer in 2000, the Axxe Mk II. I cranked up the direct output before I figured out how to turn up the VCA output. It was comforting to know this is a feature at least during back to the 2600.

    I first heard Summer Madness in Rocky, and I didn't know it was an original song, so I figured it was some background music from Bill Conti. The song plays when Rocky comes back home all battered and bruised after a fight, and it was perfect for that scene (Rocky puts ice on his forehead, and the increasingly high pitch of that note works like a musical representation of a splitting headache). [EDIT: I was wrong, the song is Rocky is not Summer Madness, but it's pretty much identical. Look at fredestrada's reply below for details.]

    • @fredestrada8252
      @fredestrada8252 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @catoblepag 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@fredestrada8252 Well, you've just blown my mind. I stand corrected. After listening to Reflections, I must say this is more than the same sound... it's basically the same song with a different arrangement! I wonder why Kool & The Gang didn't sue, I think there's a case for plagiarism here.

    • @catoblepag
      @catoblepag 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@fredestrada8252 By the way, Wikipedia and the band's official site got it wrong too. In the defunct Kool & The Gang Official Site, they say: " Hits like (...) the classic Summer Madness (featured on the Grammy-winning movie soundtrack Rocky)". But looking in other places, it seems that the synth lead sound was SAMPLED by Bill Conti, so it's exactly the same. I've also found this quote on Songfacts: ""Nobody had told us," Gang staff member Cleveland Brown remembered to Billboard. "We were watching this movie about a white boxer. When it came to the scene where Stallone dropped the needle on the record, and 'Summer Madness' started playing, I can tell you we got pretty loud in the theater."

    The synth sounds that hit me in 1978 were those of Supermax featuring the legendary Kurt Hauenstein. They were artists from Austria and created a phenomenal and timeless album titled 'World of Today'. On the first track is a , big phat synth riff that you cannot, ever unhear. Also in track no. 3 'Reality' there is a square lead sound (surrounded by lush string pads) that plays solo melodies throughout the ballad that rip your heart out. I was just 6 yo at the time, and this album shaped my entire life. I was wondering DM, if you could do an analysis of the synth programming done there. And to anyone in the community reading this, I highly recommend you check out this record. I believe it is a world class hidden gem.

    Everything Anthony says in this video proves why analog synths will always be better than digital ones. And he wasn't even trying to prove it. He just makes you reach to this conclusion by yourself. And that's why I consider him to be not only a true master of synthesis, but also a sonic philosopher.

    Great job, perhaps a little more attack, and a little less portamento would get a bit closer, the filter sounds a little more open and modulated a little more by the envelope on the track but this could be due to the difference in the 2500 and 2600 maybe? But anyway great video and a joy to see your enthusiasm about this great track.

    I wish “the gang” was this universally loved when this cut was made. Glad they didn’t have to die before this recognition. Light of worlds was a concept album by black Muslims about their culture and inspiration. It goes way deeper than this instrumental. Way deeper! The Fruitman was about food security in the hood. The song light of worlds was a prayer. Summer madness is about the unadultered joy of American black folks and the things we do in the summer.

    I've said it many times but I absolutely agree with what Anthony has said in the past. I'm lucky in that I have few decent synths - my first, a Juno 1, then a DX7, a few Arturia synths, and thanks to modern times, several Behringer synths, and Elektron stuff as well as a few other bits.
    And yet out of all of them, there is one synth that has become my absolute favourite for how varied a sound you can get - the ARP 2600. I always imagine the Mini Moog was the king, but nope, the ARP is the king. I absolutely love it to bits. I don't think you can play with it and NOT get a sound that is breathtaking in some way.

    I first heard this song in the radio in 1996 when I was 12, not knowing what it was called or who it's by. This is how wonderful the internet is!
    Still can I not believe this masterpiece was recorded and released in 1974 - way ahead of its time!
    Thanks for these amazing 17 minutes, Claudio!!

    Beautiful music you make us discover, thanks.
    Thanks to have Anthony with you, he has an open vision of art, like Rick Rubin and Alan Moore, a vision that Art can change the face of the world.
    Thanks to you both, to all the "sonicstaters" , to bring all of us further together now.
    Regards, respect.

    I am speechless! You guys are the synth dream team :) These two have inspired my synth GAS, but even better... have taught and inspired me to actually use the gear.
