Can you do a remake of Kool and The Gang's "Open Sesame" song?
One of my favorite tracks by Kool and The Gang
The best synthesiser oriented bromance on TH-cam. Please keep making more joint videos.
Absolutely!
Bromance is for me the first time to hear and it's a way better expression then "Bro" that's heavily used in certain scenes 🙏🏼✌🏼 It made me laugh 😂
Kool & The Gang knew exactly what they were doing when they made this very beautiful classic!! The synth and the solo was epic!
The dynamic duo sharing their vast knowledge - much enjoyed!
Here's a fan of both of you. In the 80's I used to watch Bob Ross. not because I wanted to paint but because it was relaxing and nice, this is the 2024 version of that to me. I might try doing this with the Arturia version though 🤔
Doctor Mix and Professor Marinelli laying down some mad knowledge and keeping us entertained!
I love Doctor Mix enthusiasm in showing us how to construct tracks. Mr Maranelli has taught me so, so very much on how to tune a synth for the sounds I need. Both are great to watch. You learn so much from these two. Great stuff 👍
Wow, if I had synth lessons from Anthony, I would really learn, he is a great teacher.
I've learned so much about synth programming from watching Anthony's channel. He's so good at explaining things.
i can listen summer madness for hours. love Dr.Mix's reactions in every video! always been wondering about these space sounds were come from. take my like.
If it's a 49-note keyboard what's to stop you transposing the oscillators down a minor 3rd so you can play the 5th note?
Summer Madness always gives me joyful shivers. It’s just soo good.
Sound has been fundamental to create images, especially synths, they gave us the sound of sci-fi and the sound of the future, the sound of the machines.
Glad to see these cool freaks together
The single note use is weirdly organic but otherworldly.
This channel is my church, this is where I come to receive my word.
At 1:51, Anthony looks at the synth saying "Hey! I know exactly how to reproduce this sound". He then restrained the urge...
I knew it was an ARP, I'm getting familiar with these synth sounds. 😂
It gives me goosebumps in just 1 second.
Awesome video!
Hey btw there’s an easier way to get those 5 octaves without touching the voltage processor slider. The 2600’s keyboard has 5 C’s. Just tune the oscillators so that the “keyboard C” plays the required note, and there you go. You can play it across 5 octaves. 😎
Synth-Nörds Perfect Team!
When Doctor said "we don't have a 2500. Goodbye." I got an ad lol. Also good vid
The first time I heard that I thought that's not Kool & The Gang. Nice work.
Please also analyze Kraftwerk with Anthony!!!
I’ve benefited from this exploration mainly because I didn’t know before June 28, 20204 that this song was originally performed by Kool and the Gang. Like other commenters, it was the Rocky soundtrack that brought it to my attention. I probably thought it came from the mind of film score composer Bill Conti.
I also will tell you that my ear gave me that it was played on an ARP synthesizer, but I did not stop to consider that it might have been the 2500. My logic should have kicked in at the sound of the fifth octave. It might’ve been different if the 2500 had not been eclipsed as of 1975 by the 2600.
I love it when Marinelli makes that point about needing to run from the filter to the attenuator, or else the sound will constantly be on. That is a lesson I learned objectively when I got my own first Arp synthesizer in 2000, the Axxe Mk II. I cranked up the direct output before I figured out how to turn up the VCA output. It was comforting to know this is a feature at least during back to the 2600.
And the 80s/90s generations mostly know it from:
Drums please!
Summer, summer, summertime 🌞
was about to say the same - DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince is those who don’t know
Im 99% sure its just 1 oscillator and the beating sound is just reverb and delay mixed in more with every octave..
Agree! AND in those days they/we used tape echo machines that, by it's slightly irregular little speed variations, get the slight beating/chorussing that makes one think it's more than one VCO 🙂 recognized it immidiately
Wahhhwaa wahhhhh.. wahhhhh .wahhh...wahhhhoohhhaaa
The song has such a great groove no changes in the progression were necessary.
I first heard Summer Madness in Rocky, and I didn't know it was an original song, so I figured it was some background music from Bill Conti. The song plays when Rocky comes back home all battered and bruised after a fight, and it was perfect for that scene (Rocky puts ice on his forehead, and the increasingly high pitch of that note works like a musical representation of a splitting headache). [EDIT: I was wrong, the song is Rocky is not Summer Madness, but it's pretty much identical. Look at fredestrada's reply below for details.]
Summer Madness is not in Rocky. The song you remember is called Reflections and uses the same sound as Summer Madness.
@@fredestrada8252 thanks, I was trying to figure where I heard the same sound
@@fredestrada8252 Well, you've just blown my mind. I stand corrected. After listening to Reflections, I must say this is more than the same sound... it's basically the same song with a different arrangement! I wonder why Kool & The Gang didn't sue, I think there's a case for plagiarism here.
@@fredestrada8252 By the way, Wikipedia and the band's official site got it wrong too. In the defunct Kool & The Gang Official Site, they say: " Hits like (...) the classic Summer Madness (featured on the Grammy-winning movie soundtrack Rocky)". But looking in other places, it seems that the synth lead sound was SAMPLED by Bill Conti, so it's exactly the same. I've also found this quote on Songfacts: ""Nobody had told us," Gang staff member Cleveland Brown remembered to Billboard. "We were watching this movie about a white boxer. When it came to the scene where Stallone dropped the needle on the record, and 'Summer Madness' started playing, I can tell you we got pretty loud in the theater."
Yep those 2 tracks are easy to get mixed up... I played both songs at a festival on my ARP Odyssey and Rhodes (from a Nord Stage 2).. a lot of fun... they've been part of my life since 70s.. always loved both tunes..
The synth sounds that hit me in 1978 were those of Supermax featuring the legendary Kurt Hauenstein. They were artists from Austria and created a phenomenal and timeless album titled 'World of Today'. On the first track is a , big phat synth riff that you cannot, ever unhear. Also in track no. 3 'Reality' there is a square lead sound (surrounded by lush string pads) that plays solo melodies throughout the ballad that rip your heart out. I was just 6 yo at the time, and this album shaped my entire life. I was wondering DM, if you could do an analysis of the synth programming done there. And to anyone in the community reading this, I highly recommend you check out this record. I believe it is a world class hidden gem.
Something new in sound has changed our lives. But the wonkiness of our work might drive DrM bonkers. Seriously, in a few minutes everything changed. To understand seek our newest, "Uncle Fester's Brain Dance" We're taking music for a ride, sometimes, it takes us.
How can one not love these two guys?
Everything Anthony says in this video proves why analog synths will always be better than digital ones. And he wasn't even trying to prove it. He just makes you reach to this conclusion by yourself. And that's why I consider him to be not only a true master of synthesis, but also a sonic philosopher.
You guys gotta do a regular thing together. Your chemistry is great and your knowledge is extremely complementary. Makes for great content. Thank you.
That sound is a bit like Quincy Jones' 1967 Ironside theme

Thanks so much for the syntherial moments!👏🏻👋🏼 Could you also analyse Magic Fly from SPACE one time?💙👏🏻👏🏻👋🏼👋🏼🧿
Hi @Doctormix, could you show us how to recreate "Air - All I Need", synth bass lead patch. The intro and especially from 2.48.
Maybe it is real simple to do🤔😀 thx in advance. Brgds Stephan
When Kool Gang preformed this live they used a miniMOOG as far as I've seen. "ronald bell on keys"
OBX as well.
This is why i write songs and sing, LOL. I love nerding out with these two but I just can't go there when I'm working on a song.
For me, it was the the trio of Wakeman,Wright and Emerson. that instilled my desire to play synths. There were of course many others like Stevie Wonder,Tangerine dream and Isao Tomita, just to name a few.😁🎶🎹🎶 Play On
Fabulous! And sure sounds like Dr Mix has perfect pitch. Or is it relative?...
I remember hearing this on an old tape my mate had. I asked him to play it and play it. What a tune. Never bored of this. Amazing. Thanks for doing this DOC and ANT.
These have been interesting choices. They aren't super showy like you said but none the less are somehow more than the sum of their parts when in context.
Also interesting if this was 2500, most people assume it's 2600, Ive not found any elaboration on the recording.
First time summer madness listener, it’s in my playlist now. Thanks DM🙏
It's a classic. Check out "Winter Sadness" by the same group. It's got vocals and is lesser known, but it's nice in its own right.
this was awesome
all my afro years of living i thought that song was from grover wash... jr. ... really from katg... great stuff anthony and dr.
Before you can have an open mind, you must listen. This content is more valuable than anything a simple music teacher can provide. (Myself included)
Last night I watched this video and I don't know when to sleep ? Those 2 dudes work so hard producing interesting content, that you have to work almost just as hard to keep up with them. They drench in devotion and passion for fashion 💯🙏🏼✌🏼
I would love to see you reacting to „Rah Band“ The Crunch & Beyond.
Such a special synth album.
❤ Thanks for this life changing!😊
You Two and music love🎉
I've a newfound appreciation for octave buttons/sliders after seeing this.
Great job, perhaps a little more attack, and a little less portamento would get a bit closer, the filter sounds a little more open and modulated a little more by the envelope on the track but this could be due to the difference in the 2500 and 2600 maybe? But anyway great video and a joy to see your enthusiasm about this great track.
Nice to see the german single cover from "Get down on it / Summer Madness", great sound exploration. ✌🏻+ ❤
Also love the Will Smith / Fresh Prince “summertime” version of this part, with volume sliding :-)
I'm convinced K&TG made that song around that synth sound alone after playing it.
Less than 20 minutes but an absolute goldmine of useful practical information! Thanks guys!
You two complement each other like mozzarella and fungi. Tasty pizza, guys!
Super sound!👍🇷🇺
The Italians playing with volts, named after the great Italian scientist Alessandro Volta. Who invented the battery and helped understand the nature of electricity.
Please, make synth analysis of "Blow Your Head" by Fred Wesley & The JB's
Claudio, your passion is inspiring!!!! And Tony is the master of eloquence!
I don't know if anyone else has said it, but I always thought this was done on an Odyssey simply because I created it perfectly on my Odyssey, in truth I never had the record in a sleeve just a standard white open centre one.
Everytime i watch you inspire me to head into my synthlab, thank you
Brilliant Maestro Bros, how far ahead of time, sound and technology were the Legends who put that together for Kool and the Gang?
Очень интересное видео 👍♥🎹спасибо 👍♥🎶
I suddenly need to hear a cover of Twilight City from Wave Race 64
Off topic, but please do full version of famous piano riffs.. unless if you already have it somewhere ?
Man, both them tracks yall covered had to be psychedelically induced creations back in the day 😅 they always sounded so surreal and eerie.
Some of those voltage adjustments froze my brain.
How about Lucky Man by Emerson, Lake and Palmer?
Take a look to Khruangbin summer madness cover...
I like winter sadness even beter, love both songs. Both songs are instant playlist songs.
This song is a herald of the arrival of the solstice. Once you hear this summer has arrived.
RiP Pino D'angio
Could you please show us how to do the famous twooo twooo at the begening ?
🙌🏻🙌🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Can you Ohio Players - Funky Worm, pls?
I wish “the gang” was this universally loved when this cut was made. Glad they didn’t have to die before this recognition. Light of worlds was a concept album by black Muslims about their culture and inspiration. It goes way deeper than this instrumental. Way deeper! The Fruitman was about food security in the hood. The song light of worlds was a prayer. Summer madness is about the unadultered joy of American black folks and the things we do in the summer.
“You don’t have to change for me” has an equally appealing synth line. Beautifully played and expertly designed sound.
Summer Madness it's a state of mind. Epocale!
What a piece of music!
A milestone.
So Kool!
Here it is, the groove slightly transformed....
You're a great couple :-) Give me more...
🔥
Very cool! I remember playing Summer Madness (mixed up a little with Bill Conti's Reflections) on an ARP Odyssey at a festival in Norway about 10 years ago... I think I used the keyboard octave switch to get the top octaves. Might even have started in the lower octave come to think about it.. those 70s keyboard lead sounds are so ingrained in me..
Amazing analysis. I love that song and also how with one note of that amazing 2600 synth sound with the glissando is what made this song. And let's not forget the Rhodes sounds beautifully recorded and those wet guitars are just perfect. Great video!
WTF???????????
I see two living legends on a screen thumbnail. Must click. Must play....
....This is going to be good!.... 🔥
You are for me, the perfect team, love your works .
I've said it many times but I absolutely agree with what Anthony has said in the past. I'm lucky in that I have few decent synths - my first, a Juno 1, then a DX7, a few Arturia synths, and thanks to modern times, several Behringer synths, and Elektron stuff as well as a few other bits.
And yet out of all of them, there is one synth that has become my absolute favourite for how varied a sound you can get - the ARP 2600. I always imagine the Mini Moog was the king, but nope, the ARP is the king. I absolutely love it to bits. I don't think you can play with it and NOT get a sound that is breathtaking in some way.
You two are so good, together. Great video. Enjoyed every second.
To me the ARP 2600 patch has more bite than the original. Like Anthony said, it honks.
Best explanation ever on the sound difference between 2 and 3 oscillators.
did you guys find any reliable sources you would be willing to share about the original equipment used for that sound in the actual track? ARP2500? Which delay? Which reverb? Which desk? Which tape machine and tape formulation? Where was it recorded originally? Who did the recording, who mixed it? I know, that’s extremely nerdy to ask, but I’d love to hear, if there was any deeper info on the surrounding techniques as well…
Sounds in rocky
Perfect for that movie scene.
Do Grandmaster Flash the Message !!!!
Great video. I've been following it
Absolute MASTERPIECE ........both classic and futuristic....all instruments have amazing sounds....the mother of all chill out soul music.
Fun AND Educational. 😍
I first heard this song in the radio in 1996 when I was 12, not knowing what it was called or who it's by. This is how wonderful the internet is!
Still can I not believe this masterpiece was recorded and released in 1974 - way ahead of its time!
Thanks for these amazing 17 minutes, Claudio!!
I friggin LOVE this! The Doctor and Master AnthonyM together recreating that Kool sound. 👏👍🏼 BRAVO BOYS
Beautiful music you make us discover, thanks.
Thanks to have Anthony with you, he has an open vision of art, like Rick Rubin and Alan Moore, a vision that Art can change the face of the world.
Thanks to you both, to all the "sonicstaters" , to bring all of us further together now.
Regards, respect.
Love you guys. Keep up the good work!!
0:02 The theme from "Ironside" 😁
I am speechless! You guys are the synth dream team :) These two have inspired my synth GAS, but even better... have taught and inspired me to actually use the gear.
Awesome passion. You guys really appreciate the creativity of the analogue design of sound.
brilliant sounds
This was great. Thanks gents.
