Especially without a built-in network of friends or contacts, or if you walk your own path instead of conforming to mainstream expectations. Beneath the public image of a friendly, laid-back nation is the reality that there's plenty of low-level racism, widespread xenophobia, and the undesirable traits that come from a conservative society. Not all of us - but enough to make life harder for many new arrivals. I admire what you're doing, and also - you pronounced 'Melbourne' perfectly and naturally - not easy for non-Australians to do.
