Please ride safely and defensively! Drivers just don’t notice bikes and will pull out, sideswipe, cut off, or otherwise treat you like you’re not there. No use getting upset, just accept that you’re smaller to see and easier to miss. Watch the front wheels for movement. Best way to tell if a car is starting to slowly move forward. If you want to live, ride like you are a rabbit surrounded by wolves. If you ride without caution it can end up badly. Please be safe! 😄👍
Oh man. I just bought the same bike! Mine is a 1988 gs450L. Hasn't been tagged in 7-8 years but I'm confident it will run on it's own steam. Thank you for the teaser!
Loved the Video ! Going to be using your procedures on my recently acquired 1977 Suzuki GS 400 !! True Barn Find ! Been Sitting in Storage for the Last 20 Years !
I just bought a 1982 GS450T about two weeks ago! Then winter showed up in Iowa with a vengeance. But the bike has been meticulously maintained and I can't wait until spring! For now, winterize, winterize, winterize....
Nice! That sounds wonderful. Iowa will be perfect for this bike. Winter came really early here too. It is 8 right now. I didn't get to run this bike once this year! Next summer. Thanks for the comment,
My dad past 3 yrs ago on april and his bday was on the 16 of may so here i am today looking for every video i can find so that i can get his old bike started hopefully before the 16 so that i can take it out for a ride he has the exact bike as you do its a 1981 gs450l if i get this running i know ill have something amazing and beautiful to always remember him with .. Thanks for the video man you def gave me some inspiration
Thank you so much for this kind comment. I’m really sorry to hear that. My dad died of cancer when I was 18 and he and I had just gotten into working on old motorcycles together before he got really sick. I’m so glad you could find some inspiration and maybe even some help firing the rig. Good luck and thank you for sharing this.
I want to say thank you for this video. I recently bought a 1983 Suzuki GS450L, my first motorcycle, and slowly learning about replacing the engine start switch and whatnot. Your video has shown me that I may have been starting it up wrong this entire time.
My first bike was an 83 GS450T; courtesy of the Navy, I got to ride it all over the UK and on the Autobahn (max speed, 165 Km/h). I've had to tinker with the switches on subsequent Suzis (Katana & VStrom) - seems to be one of the few weak spots in these solid machines.
I've had a 82 Yamaha SECA 750 for the past 8 years, riding it and keeping it running bring a certain joy you can't get from newer machines. Spent two summers fiddling with it's four (count 'em, four!) carbs before I finally got them dialed in right, and this summer has brought it's own maintenance in the form of a new wheel bearing. Still, well worthwhile.
Jacob Russell Awesome bike! They are so damn cool. I have a 1972 CB 750 as well so I know about the four carbs. Can be tricky to be sure. They fun though. Wheel bearings aught to be a good job.
Great video. Super job! I bought one of these new from the dealer in the 80s. It was a 1981, same color. Your wheels and front disc brake look like they are from the 1982 model. The 1981 had different mags and a solid front disc brake. The bike is incredibly durable. I rode mine for over 60,000 miles across 31 states. When I sold it, it still ran beautifully. I tried several different exhausts on it, and a Kerker two-into-one slightly modified worked the best. I changed the handle bar to a flatter model, and the shift in my personal center of mass improved the handling substantially. Good luck with your future trips!
Heck yeah! I am just astounded at the durability and versatility of this little rig. Last fall I took it deep into the woods on a steep, muddy trail that would be very difficult with an ATV and it preformed admirably. Thanks a lot for the tips and comments.!
I can't wait for all this snow to be gone so I can start bombing around on that little beast again. I rode it on a 6 mile trail last year through a steep, muddy trail and it preformed famously! Thanks for the comment.
TotallyL337 Yes, I noticed that as well. Brake light works though. Tires are pretty good, considering and if I'm more than dubbing around it's boots and pants to be sure. Thanks for the comment.
Recently purchased a '82 GS650L about a week ago and it was running when I bought it but hasn't started since. It was shutting off when the rpm's dropped back to idle and now I can only get it to crank but doesn't turn over. This is my first time working on a carburated bike and looking forward to learning more about it . Hopefully I can get her running as good as she looks!
Good luck! Sounds like fuel to me. Make sure the line isn't plugged from the tank and work back from there. Have fun. It's a puzzle you can ride when you solve it.
It's great to see you get the old bike running. I have a barn find 1980 GS450L that I have been wrenching on and riding for a few years. Two recommendations: 1. Replace the rubber line on your front brake. It is a maintenance item with a 2 year refresh interval. My guess is that like mine, yours is about 35 years overdue to be changed out, which is pretty dangerous. You might note the front brake feels spongy - that's a hint that it is time to replace. You can get a custom braided line from ebay, which is what I did after figuring out the stock parts are unavailable. 2. The regulator/rectifier in these bikes only regulate voltage on 2 out of the 3 phases from the stator. When your headlight is on (mine has a switch, yours might not) you are sending all the voltage the stator can crank to your battery. This can make bad things happen. I recommend a replacement unit called the SH775 from a Polaris, although it is too big to fit under the side cover. Anyways, happy wrenching and riding.
Holy crap! Thank you so much for this fount of wonderful and useful information! Yes, my front brake is terrifying as all get out, and now i know why! I am used to bigger bikes and it is so fun be be down on this smaller one, but it is still a bike and I have to remember that. Thanks a lot for the part number too on the polaris part. Awesome. Now just a little more snow has to melt and I can dig the old bike out.
No problem, I am happy to help out another rider. I came from sport bikes and honestly feel like I have just about as much fun on this old 450 as I did with much faster bikes. I am also waiting for the great melt to happen, but Maine keeps getting pelted with storms!
Hey there. Yeah, I've had a slew of other, bigger bikes and I am having an absolute blast on this little rig. In the late fall last year I was riding on forest roads/trails with it with not really any problems at all. I am cognizant of the low pipes but its just so light and peppy. There is a young woman trying to resurrect an 81 450 and she reached out to me on this channel. I've offered what little I can for suggestions and thought you may be able to throw your two cents at the issue. th-cam.com/video/XDkM1YYq1U0/w-d-xo.html
They are great little bikes, aren't they? I have certainly been enjoying mine this spring up in Maine. I just did a few more minor maintenance items and cleaned the carbs and she is just purring. I will take a look at the other video and see if I can do anything to help.
I just got one with 11k miles The last time it had the oil done was 2006 but it sat since about then, I’m going to do what you did though before starting it
@ Bus Huxley • I just bought a stock 1985 GS 1150 ES , it hasn't been out of the previous owners garage since 2010, (12 yrs.). Just needs a new battery fork rebuild, oil and tires and she's good to go!
tim sway Thanks! It's troubling the boost I get from hearing that burbling twin cylinder. I can only imagine how it must feel to complete a successful heart surgery.

Hey Bus - what do you reckon the total cost of materials ran you? I sent this vid to my buddy who has one in a similar state…trying to plan to do the same. Excellent video!
White size and style bars do you have on it? I cannot find the stock size and style and mine has bull horn bars on it and I'm learning as I go. Same bike btw mine was also a barn find. Just want to know what size bars will fit on these as 1" bars from a Harley Sportster (I know, it's ok to laugh lol) didnt work on it. This is my first bike. Thanks for the video as this helped me learn a lot more!!!
Heck yeah! Yes, bike, wonky bars like that make it so much harder to steer than stock. I don't know off the top of my head what size they are but ill take some measurements tomorrow and post it here. It is a really ideal first bike for all kinds of reasons. I would like even flatter bars than I have on here now, but am not going to take the time and go through the trouble to mess around with that. Thanks a lot for the kind comment.
Bus Huxley oh thank you kindly. I want to say they are 7/8 if I'm not mistaken. I just have short arms (I'm only 5'7) so leaning forward would be a no go lol. Thank you again! Also thanks for the quick response! You're awesome :)
So the bars are indeed 7/8th thick and they rise about 7 inches and run back to the terminus of the grips about 10 inches. They would be perfect I think for you. My gangly arms are hanging down to my legs when I ride this but it is still an incredible amount of fun. I don't know if you saw this one, but it functions like a dirt bike too! th-cam.com/video/zboP4FRpi1g/w-d-xo.html Thanks!
Bus Huxley yeah I've been looking around for a good pair. I'm definitely on a budget and the starter motor went out on this thing. I tried connecting the battery right to the starter and got nothing. I'm completely lost on this as I'm not finding any videos on how to take the starter out on this particular bike and clean it. Its $100 plus shipping for a brand new starter and I just dont have that kind of money. Think you can make a video if you have the time? I'm aching to learn to ride, and shes pretty much ready to go other than cosmetics. I can take a quick video of her and post it and you can see what I'm working with.
Thank you very much. Yes, that is a good question. So I was really close with the fella that ran and parked this last back in 07 and I knew him to be the type of guy to winterize his machines well with stabil. I popped the bowls off and didn't see any varnishing whatever and figured I would tear into them if I needed to. I am really glad I didn't because over a year later now that thing is purring like a kitten still. I had it out today several times in fact. It is so much fun. Small bikes are wildly versatile.

Bus Huxley being resourceful isn’t always jenky. Great video. I have similar hopes with my 1986 GSX400E. I purchased it with a blown head so my journey to the first start is taking slightly longer 👍🤞🤞
My brother had the sport model - the 1980 GS450S- but same engine. Lasted forever. Those are great engines.
I just got one of these awesome bikes running two weeks ago that I believe hadn’t been ran possibly since 1987. Runs great. Impressive machines.
I was just given an 81 450t. Can't wait to get it rippin
Just stopped by to reminisce cause long, long ago I had one of those Suzuki GS450L's and loved it. Great job getting the old gal running again.
Thanks! So fun and reliable.
I’m looking to pick one up on Sunday as my first bike. I couldn’t thank you enough for this informative video!!!
I am so glad it could be of use! You will love it. It is a perfect motorcycle! it can be a dirt bike and a road cruiser. Whatever! And affordable.

That look of joy at 6:57 when the bike fires up. I love that feeling! Congrats!
Yes! If i could act that then I'd be getting paid for it. That sound. Thanks for the sub! I like what you've got going on over at your channel.
You bet! Thank you!

I've got a 78 that's been sitting in a shed for over 10 years. Pretty sure it just needs the carbs rebuilt. Any tips?
This is guy is so cool. Video got me so hyped to revamp my barn find 1980 gs450L
It’s an incredibly fun bike.

@@BusHuxley can you tell me the color name and code of this color i like it and i can not find some color charts on internet. Thx.
I’m so much loving this movie !
I’ve never got bored from watching it many times !
I am looking forward to the sequel♪
Thanks a lot!
Great work! I have the Gs450TX. I turned it into a cafe and put pods and a Mac 2 into 1 exhaust. It sounds like a Harley. Freaky cool bike.
I can't wait for all this snow to be gone so I can start bombing around on that little beast again. I rode it on a 6 mile trail last year through a steep, muddy trail and it preformed famously! Thanks for the comment.
Good Job; awsome ! Enjoy your classic ; greetings from Costa Rica
Thanks a lot!
I bought a new one in 1981 red , it a super fast bike !!! Blew away a lot of 500 and 650’s
Yes! I can’t believe it’s speed. I don’t go too fast on it often but it has a very good top end. It revs and revs!
Old video but excellent to watch. Unique presentation style is part of it. I just got an old very well used 85 GS300l as a project.
Thanks a lot! I really appreciate this comment.
the laugh/smile at the end is delicious. hugs & kisses-jj
Rear light is out!! Good job. New tires, and boots suggested.
TotallyL337 Yes, I noticed that as well. Brake light works though. Tires are pretty good, considering and if I'm more than dubbing around it's boots and pants to be sure.

Love hearing the old engine purr. Nice one Bus
sa-maker Thank you good sir! It purrs.
I used to have a red one bought in Lamoine Maine. I’d love to get another one after all these years
Sweet!
I agree never throw old fuel into the river, make sure it is as fresh as possible before you do!
Nice, just got a '77 gs750 back up and running. Old bikes are awesome!
Theyre so fun and easy to work on. Thanks!
Recently purchased a '82 GS650L about a week ago and it was running when I bought it but hasn't started since. I have just got one. But it's being a bit of a challenge. The engine runs well once hot. But cold starts a very lumpy lumpy.
Good job, only other thing would have been to clean the gunk out of the carbs , but real nice how it started right up after 10 yrs
It ran great! I think he Stabiled it when he put it away last.
Just picked up an '82 GS650G. I hope to experience elation like you did.
I hope it fires up! They are robust, well designed engines.
Nice job Fonzie..!! Wicked Smaht..!!
I took my road test with a 1981 GS450E in High School, brought back some memories, thanks.
Awesome! Slick bikes. Amazing how well it runs.
Well done 👍
I have the same bike color and all. Thank you. Now I can keep &0 bucks in my pocket. 😊
because safety last hahaha, great vid. very inspiring indeed
Thanks!
Rad video dude. It makes me wanna do it myself instead of finding a mechanic
Thanks a lot man! Dive into it!! What’s the worst that could happen.
Anyways, happy wrenching and riding.

my first bike was the GS250T. I only got into bikes while drunk one night, and having a go on a CD200 (I think it was).
Great bikes
Great job!!👍
Thanks!
bought a 1985, strip to a naked bike, I guess you'll be horrified at what it looks like, wish I knew more to how maintain it like you, new rider
you can learn! I would not be horrified at all! All bikes are cool. i dont love super loud ones, but they fun!
Good job
Thanks a lot!
I bought a 1980 GS450L last year to be my first bike. Same color as this one. It kept dieing on me when i was driving it, turns out it was a weak ground from the electrical panel to the frame of the bike.
That can be so tricky! Yes, they are so much fun. Enjoy it man.
Nice man! I’m happy to subscribe!! 👍🏻
Heck yeah! Glad your here. More like that to come, I can assure you!
Those bars dude.
Touch of class.
Coolness bro.
Thanks
Cool Video ...
Thank you very much.
Yeah, Suzuki resurrection! Fu*%ing awesome bike man!
Davin Thorndell Thanks! Good clean fun.
Great video. I just found a 81 gs450l . Question, how do you get the seat off?
Hey Bus - what do you reckon the total cost of materials ran you? I sent this vid to my buddy who has one in a similar state…trying to plan to do the same. Excellent video!
White size and style bars do you have on it? I cannot find the stock size and style and mine has bull horn bars on it and I'm learning as I go. Same bike btw mine was also a barn find. Addyston Police Officer Shot
July 13, 2006 at 12:50 AM EDT - Updated July 1 at 1:05 AM
A police lieutenant from Addyston is home this morning, after being shot right in front of the police station Wednesday afternoon.
A spokesperson for the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department says Lieutenant Dave Pahner was leading 18-year-old Joell Lewis to the police station when the Lewis pulled a 9 millimeter handgun and shot the officer. Lewis ran across the street to the Lanxess plant where officers from neighboring Cincinnati soon found and arrested him . A Hamilton County Park Ranger found a gun in grass neart the shooting scene.
The bullet hit Lieutenant Pahner's bullet-resistant vest and was stopped. He has been released from the hospital.
Witnesses told FOX19 the officer got angry because he saw the man littering. They said Lieutenant Pahner is well-known and well-liked among people in the area.
Addyston is a small village along the Ohio River on US 50 in western Hamilton County. The Sheriff's Department is handling the investigation.
I love mine
I heard that!
haahah cool! So funny with the sound ahahh 08:33
Hi I’ve got a 1981 gs450t. And I burned the coil on it but I don’t want to spend a lot of money on it what is the least cost efficient way to fix
Hey, did you figure this one out yet?
is that an old wizard wratchet ?
It may be. I am not quite sure. Ive got a slew of old tools
Cuánto de aceite lleva el motor?
I think it takes maybe three quarts? I can’t remember. It’s still running very well.
Take it off any sweet jumps??
Johnny Cupcakes of course. First thing I did. Sweet jumps. Jumped over Kezar canyon.
Woah..
I had a good laugh at the gloves at 5:36
Then again with the matching shoes at 9:05
😂😂😂
Yup. Pretty darn jenky.
Bus Huxley being resourceful isn’t always jenky.
Great video. I have similar hopes with my 1986 GSX400E. I purchased it with a blown head so my journey to the first start is taking slightly longer 👍🤞🤞
What is it that you do with old gas..
I tend to save it and use it as thinner or cleaner for grease or to start fires on burn piles. That last one is a little hairy.
So I have a gs250 the engine turns but it womt start. Has a new batter and carb. Engine turns ok but the ignition wont catch but it gets spark
