  • Tattoo friendly onsen in Japan. A Japanese hot springs near Tokyo in Atami and Food Tour experience at a Japanese Ryokan.

    Traditional Japanese Ryokan food menu that is definitely worth experiencing if you have never been to Japan. Japanese Onsen also known as hot springs are difficult to find in the Tokyo, but about a 40 minute train ride from Shinagawa station in Tokyo, you can make it to the Atami Onsen and Atami beach area. There are many local onsens and ryokans in this area but this place I am showing you in this video is tattoo friendly meaning that they accept people with tattoos just as long as you are a respectful guest. I also show you the different types of food you can experience and enjoy in a Japanese ryokan for dinner and for breakfast. Also, at this hotel, you can reserve a private onsen bath if you are a bit hesitant to share a public onsen bath with other guests. You can choose to enjoy the private bath before or after dinner. In our case, we chose to take our onsen before our meal. We also venture out of the hotel to have some Atami food, but do to the train we couldn't film that much. We'll definitely have to come back for a full food tour of the area.

    I love it when somewhere prepares the food in front of you.
    I just get a feel of the level of dedication and care that they place in their food. It makes me really appreciate the effort they put in for my meal. Makes the food taste better too.
    Here in England, wherever you go it's just a case of you order the food and they throw it in your face a minute later. You eat it and you're full. That's it. There's nothing special about that.

    Ah! I miss Japan! Wish I can go back one time! Onsen are just the best! Tattoo friendly Onsen are really great, as I have a tattoo myself. Luckily I can cover it with a band-aid.

    • @StraightUpEats
      @StraightUpEats 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah, it's a great workaround, but weird when you think about it right? Ink under the skin? Big no no. Open sore covered by a bandage? Sure, come on in! I know about the historical contexts, but still funny when you think about it! Speaking of which, though, a lot of these onsens are opening up to people with tattoos. It used to be just a blanket ban on all of them, but more and more, Japanese people are understanding that westerners tend to have tattoos. So some may ban Japanese people with tattoos but be totally okay with a clearly foreign looking person with a tattoo. If you ever make it back here, then you will definitely have more luck finding a place that won't require you to use the bandage trick!

    Every Onsen I've been to in Japan has been accepting of my tattoo. I even asked this one dude at a Ryokan up in Koya San about it and he said, well, you're obviously not Yakuza so no one would worry. I've only got one though...dragon on my back. Maybe if they were all over it would be diff.

      Because you're a foreigner, different story for people who look Asian. But hey, that could be changing.

    • @Muffincaek

      I have a butterfly knife across my chest and have never had a problem with it. Public baths at ryokans, no problem but at some capsule hotels I've been asked to cover it up with a strip of beige surgical tape which is no problem. One of my friend got a Legend of Zelda Hyrule shield on his back, which is from a japanese Nintendo game, has only ever been allowed once to a public bath, after 10pm at 1 ryokan..

      I have an ankle tattoo and one on myside, i asked and they said it would be better if i covered them up.... i'm a tiny asian girl..
      so it really does just depend on the place/people

    • @kent0645
      @kent0645 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      In Japan, they believe that if you have a tattoo, you are part of the Yakuza gang. My grandmother in Japan would always make this a lecture when I came to visit as it is popular for Americans to get tattoos. If you're foreign, they would understand, but as an Asian, it is different.

    I love the onsen at Odaiba from your video, and went there finally because of your video! It was so amazing and just loved it. Maybe you can do "A day in the life" with someone who works at an onsen? It'll be interesting to know.

    Oh man, I went to Japan back in March 2019 and only wished I had a discord channel full of knowledge! It wasn't the first time i'd gone and went with a friend who wasn't his first time either and also spoke japanese, so made things simpler, but this channel is solid gold! thank you Paolo!

    Aaaw I like Atami. They have an early kind of sakura there that already bloom in early February 👍

      Is it cherry or plum? I've heard the plum blossom first

      @@montgomeryfortenberry its a specific kind of cherry/sakura. The flowers also lasts longer then the ”regular” kinds that starts flowering in early April. They grow the same kind in other places on Izu, such as Kawazu. In Atami they have a sakura festival from mid January to early March. But if you are looking for ume they also have an amazing ume park that starts flowering around the same time. The train ride from Tokyo goes by the ocean, its pretty spectacular imo.

    I love this video! I love Atami! It was a very “local” area with gorgeous nature (Atami Baien Park). There weren’t a lot of tourists in that area and it was very peaceful. It’s definitely a great place to relax! We were in Atami last year during summer although we stayed at a hotel much further from where you guys stayed at. For reference, we stayed at Watei onsen hotel (it was the best authentic ryokan everrr).
