I sincerely will never tire of these podcasts. Seth: But......but the value!!!! Richard: This card might shoot your opponent in the head, but it doesn't replace itself. I don't think it's very good. Crim: Nuanced and thoughtful takes as long as the card isn't green.
Lord of Atlantis is a 2/2 Master of the Pearl Trident is a 2/2 Merfolk Trickster is a 2/2 Harbinger (both of Seas and Tides) are both 2/2s Tishana's Tidebinder is a 3/2 Rishadan Dockhand is a 1/2 Svyelun is a 3/4. Only Vodalian Hexcatcher and Tideshapers are 1/1s, but wait, if you kick the Tideshaper, then guess what--it's a 2/2. Some fish pilots are returning to Silvergill Adept, which is a 2/1, but most of us dropped that card a while ago. Richard, you're a smart guy, but what the hell are you talking about? Merfolk does not fear Bowmasters in the least.
I play merfolk and I definitely will try flare of denial. We are already sacrificing our fish to counter stuff, this one seems just more efficient and still usable late game without sacrificing anything so I can't really see any downsides. Not sure if it will replace FON entirely, but this is at least useful all the time and not only against certain decks. And I definitely don't agree that counterspells are trash in this meta tbh. Non creature counter perhaps, but overall counterspell will always have a place imo. Can't wait to try this and of course harbinger as well which seems completely busted
As someone who plays Affinity in Modern, I'm kinda mid on Ugin's Labyrinth. My concern with the card is how it's gonna impact the mana base. Yes, potentially, it can make two mana if you imprint the card. However, the deck typically wants to run x amount of artifact lands to help enable the Affinity part, and this isn't an artifact land. So yes, it potentially could help you power out a turn two Synthesizer, but also means you might have to wait a turn or two to power out your seven drops, which means you given your opponent a chance to deal with it before you get any value out of it. I might be wrong, but it just seems kinda clunky with Affinity, but I do think it's still a powerful card, and some decks will definitely take advantage of it.
Just a heads up- Ugin's binding doesn't work with prototype. prototype is weird and alters the card cmc and color, so the spell is both cheaper and not colorless
Sorin has some combos with Nourishing Shoal to gain 10+ life and shoot them dead on turn 2. Certainly something to keep in mind and brew, as the potential is huge.
The fact that Ajani, Nacatl Pariah didn't make the top 20 means the Goldfish crew doesn't appreciate...... Me going 2-3 or 1-4 at Modern Tourneys playing Cat tribal despite paying a large amount for a Good mana base.
I think Psychic Frog could do something in Modern. We got pieces of the old Psycatog deck in MH2 like Wonder and Upheaval so maybe there's something there. If not maybe there's some sort of Dimir Scam deck it fits into.
It's interesting what Seth said about this sets power level not being as raw as mh2😊. I find this set to be the most thought provoking sets ever, if not just powered by raw power cards. These cards are perfectly powerful, with all the magic the gathering we've come to expect from a game that's perfect.
If played correctly, you can sack your creatures to red flare in response to a removal spell. The only thing is that I think you need to add 2-4 more red creatures (which I chose two Grim Lavamanacers) so as to make red flare's free cast more possible (much like FoW in legacy). I like how opponents don't necessarily know how low they are until this happens. And THEN you have access to Barbarian Ring, just in case. I'm unsure of this last idea, but for tempo, playing the new UR burn spell with cantrip from Thunder Junction with this could be awesome. Cast UR burn spell in response to removal, red flare in response sacrificing the targeted (soon-to-be dead creature) and copy the UR burn spell with cantrip for 4 damage and replacing them with two more cards. IDK, probably silly, but still an idea. Also like a possible play with Arclight Phoenix? LOL
Lightning Helix is fine in Standard. It's the rest of Boros that is just up to fuck all, besides Convoke. Jeskai tends towards artifacts for the board and control for interaction. Mardu is not quite there, hard to align the distinct colors and the multi-color cards at the moment. Naya, on the other hand, has Annie Joins Up, which both solves the 'what do I do about things with more than 3 toughness?' problem AND makes all the durdly G/R/W legends go in to hyper drive. Helix gives a bit of breathing room for that deck.
For new Ulamog in reanimator you need some kind of exile flavor because it will just be a vanilla 7/7 with the ward if there isn't anything juicy in exile since you aren't getting the cast trigger
Vexing Bauble hard counters: Discover, Cascade, and Free-from-hand spells, etc which kind of decimate a number of existing and possible decks. Worst case scenario it's 2 mana draw a card, best scenario it's 1 mana your opponent answers it or loses. Not talked about enough brutal card in a fair few formats, but maybe people don't really play magic like that these days and it'll end up not really getting played which would be crazy to me considering ages ago this would have been trash cuz it wasnt that common to cast spells for free but today there's a lot of free spell BS this hard counters. (still might not be good enough though somehow? wild)
49:45 I know Richard is speaking facts cause he never moves more than 3 inches per video, so when he starts to move hands and change expresions i know crazy stuff is about to go down
Phlage is ETB or ATTACKS i think the second part is overlooked and can work fantastically when it repeatedly gaurentees 3 damage or removes blockers. May not be a 4 of but jeskai control or boros burn its a big body that will end the game.
They are aware it has an attack trigger it’s literally the same as Uro and Kroxa. But the problem is if you have to escape it which is not trivial in decks like burn
The only thing stopping tower from utterly shattering the entire format is the fact that unless you are planning to use it as a ritual you cannot really play more than 1-2. On the other hand, it still might crack the format open.
Necrodominance probably won't work well in Scam. It has a replacement effect that will exile your cards if they are put into a graveyard from anywhere.
I'm very confused about Richard's argument about harbinger. The fact the none of the top decks play blue is a point in it's favor, unlike magus where you might waste 3 mana just for it to catch a bolt.
It's SO crazy to me that Grief still exists when a 1 mana hatecard DESIGNED to hate on it still isn't good enough because 1/2 the games you play second, you're not going to have 4-of in the main for game 1 even if you're on the play, then even if you win game 2 with it from your sideboard you're on the draw for game 3. It's so ridiculously stupid Grief still exists, what a toxic, awful card.
The Flare spells are not really free, You have to sacrifice a game piece on board, that you had to invest in to put on the field. Except in very specific cases. Probably still very good, but there is an actual cost. As opposed to force or the evoke elementals.
I dunno anything about Modern format but I love the banter xD I was curious on Nadu specifically. It essentially reads as a 3/4 Flier with "give all your creatures Ward - your opponent draws a card, and if it's a land they put it on the battlefield". Is a +1 full-field Ward effect not good in Modern? I really have no context on the format and would love some input!
There've been cards in the past like Kira, Great Glass-Spinner that saw play. However in today's modern a purely defensive ward-granting creature is probably too slow at 3 mana. Nadu's combo potential makes it interesting though!
so they still don't get that necrodominance would let you draw your whole deck with sheoldred and gain X life where X = the number of cards in your library? not to mention fill your graveyard
Your argument is false in a few places. You (mist likely) can't draw your deck, as you have to pay the life all at once, not in incraments. Meaning you can at most draw howevermuch life you have -1. You dont fill the gy as everything gets exiled. Both of these things alredy assume you play close to monoblack and sheoldred survives.
Shifting woodlands looks busted but i don't think it's good enough for modern, the best thing you can do is copy omniscience but getting sunken citadel, a fetch, a shifting and then getting omniscience into your yard is a minimum of 4 cards with self mill and a far chunk of randomness with self mill. Earliest you are going off is turn 3 and theres a lot of ramdomness to it, realistically it's getting beat by most of the existing strategies.
I have mixed feelings about the helix Titan. I want to like it, but the home I imagine for it is Mardu, and in Mardu wouldn't you want Kroxa instead? 😅 I can't imagine boros using it to good effect because you need self mill. Otherwise how are you getting enough escape food. So the best home is either Mardu or Jeskai.
boros has aggressive fetch lands and the canopy vista lands, it can fill its graveyard enough to cast it for sure, not a ton, but once or twice is perfectly doable
I am kind if suprised no one mentioned how oglage is the (currently) only elder titan with removal built in. Sure its not perfect but inferno titan+ wirh built in recursion looks good enough, especially if you can get haste on him, since at that point he can kill just about anything. Also annie joins up makes him doubble lightning helix.

Its objectively underplayed. I know several decks that can play well into the meta that are in the low percentage play list. No one innovates now, everyone copies.
@@dane_anubis6213 look I hate to break it to you champ but "guy who gets mad when someone points out that their tier 3 deck is actually incredibly poorly positioned in the modern meta" is not, in fact, likely to provide "objective" analysis.
No worries. Wasn't actually angry. More pointing out the lack of understanding in the podcast, and the possible misinterpretation of data in your comment. I work in science and statistics so something being 0.2% of a data pool makes it to small to determine its potential interactions reliability in my experence. And if I am honest it's a pet deck that is not my favorite. But I do enjoy taking non tier decks for a spin at any level magic event and showing how much they are underestimated.
I will also spare you any insult related to the fact that name calling was essentially your best course of response when I opened up an alternate interpretation of data. Let's just leave that as the expected normal of internet conversation and be saddened it was all I found here
