I think he was sitting on his knees. From the way you see him grab Belle, he's kneeling and when he pulls her away from the edge, he doesn't adjust himself. That's from what I see anyway. It may be different since the camera cuts to Harriet for a split second and Cain might've adjusted himself then but I doubt it to be honest
