  • How to One-for-one Swap Your HO Scale AHM, IHC, and Rivarossi Passenger Car Plastic Wheels for Metal Wheels Made by Roll-Tru. Also works on many tender trucks.
    Have you found yourself asking questions like these?
    "Who's wheels should I use for my Rivarossi and IHC/AHM PASSENGER cars?"
    "What do I DO? I tried some Intermountain 33" wheels. They are conducting, but their axles are slighly shorter than Kadee or Rivarossi wheels. Note: All wheels are the same distance apart (if made properly), but the points on the ends of the axles differ in length from one manufacturer to another. The Intermountain wheels flopped around loosely in the Rivarossi trucks and sometimes bound up."
    "I have 12 older Rivarossi passenger cars which I have the wheels changed out of with newer steel ones. The diameters of the new wheels are correct, however the axles seem to short and the wheels sometimes drag or pop out[:0] Oh the humanity! Does any one have any suggestions. The passengers are getting restless!"
    "Best Wheels for HO Rivarossi Passenger Cars??"
    Don’t use the kludgy “33 or 36 inch and cut the brakes back” technique! Use wheels that are purposefully designed for the task!
    Roll-Tru HO Scale wheels can be purchased here:

    A sizing document for these can be found here:

    Be sure to listen to the whole video for a promo code if you're interested in these wheels! The code is expired, but if you use “ilovedoctorhobby,” you’ll get the same effect!

    This is DEFINITELY the best place to start when upgrading these cars. Getting metal wheels on them RIGHT AWAY will make them so much more enjoyable! Definitely get these and don’t try to kludge it with freight wheels. Why settle for a half-a kludge when you can get wheels that are a perfect fit?

      No doubt!

      Definitely glad I went this direction and not with barely cheaper 33's. When I experimented the 33s dragged ever so slightly at the axel and on the brake pads and added just that much more "weight" to the cars. Definitely better to use something purpose designed rather than a "kludge".

    I used to dream about having a fleet of any of these cars. They look great and were not expensive. Thanks for a very comprehensive video. Sorry it’s taken me so long to find your channel. Cheers Lance 🇦🇺

    Good video!
    I’ve never understood why so many think these Rivarossi passenger cars are high quality.
    I have a fleet that includes a set of Rivarossi heavy weights and a set of lightweight streamliners. Also have the same in Walthers, Athearn, Bachmann & even Tyco.
    Of them all, the Rivarossi’s are by far the worst mechanically. Just plain chintzy and feather light.
    Going through the process of upgrading all to metal wheels, body mounted couplers & adding weight.
    This info will be a big help!

      They can be made decent after some work, and a great place to start is definitely the wheels since they’ll at least track better.

    Enjoy your patient thoughtful narration! What is that nice looking red pacific locomotive at the start?

      Thank you so much for the encouraging words! The Pacific is an Alton and Chicago made by Broadway Limited. I think mine is Paragon 3.

    Good info thanks! Any suggestions for mounting Kadee couplers on the Rivarossi heavyweights?

    • @DoctorHobby
      @DoctorHobby  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There are two options. The first is to buy propose-built knuckle couplers that pop in in place of the arm horn couplers, the other is to body mount the coupler using coupler boxes. They used to make kits to mount the coupler boxes, but two-sided tape will due.

    The AHM models are Rivarossi, the earlier IHC models are made by Mehano (those boxes have Made in Slovenia 🇸🇮 printed on them) while the later IHC cars are made in China 🇨🇳.

      Probably best to order a sampler set to try two of each to see which ones will work best for you

    Trying to mount KD couplers on the IHC 85' passenger cars. Body mounting -- you need a PHD in mechanical engineering.

    • @DoctorHobby
      @DoctorHobby  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Someone used to make a kit for that.. Is was basically a KD box and some double sided tape..i haven't tried doing that, myself, but it night be worth it

    • @houstonpatricks
      @houstonpatricks 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kadee has a kit for the horn hooks. Takes some work but worth it. 500-something is the kit number. There’s a kit for four wheel and six wheel trucks. Newer ones with cheap plastic knuckle couplers can be replaced with a No. 5 or 148.

      Not a big fan of McHenry couplers (owned by Athearn);however, they make “snap-in” knuckle couplers for both heavyweight and lightweight Rivarrosi, etc. cars.
