I really miss Joe Chambers. What a great guy. He knew so many people. This drummer is the epitome of what Joe discovered when he came up with the Musicians Hall of Fame. Can you imagine the stories this drummer could tell??? It’s not just this guy but many other featured musicians. They aren’t name dropping, they are just stating the facts! Incredible!!!

So much fun to hear these interviews, Joe. A kid growing up in Hollywood in the late 40's and 50's, the music swept in and around us but as kids, no knowledge or even a hint of how the music was made. Now, years later, these great interviews of yours tell the rest of the story. Most people want to know all about the celebrity singers. For me, the backstory of these sessions, Nashville and Hollywood are all just terrific. Thanks for your foresight and hard work to put this all together.

I got to meet Buddy in Jackson TN in , I believe 2001 or 2002. We did a thing for the world record. Most drum sets on a song. The song was " Blue Suede Shoes " . Stan Perkins sang it and 3 drummers were on stage WS Holland, DJ Fontana & Dick Richards. Buddy was on the other side of the bldg with 25 others and my side had me and 25 others. 55 drum sets . Buddy was working with Johnny Rabb drum stick company and gave me 2 pair that day. He was an awesome man. Fine fine fine human being. Love & Miss him , sincerely , Ben*Ben ....ps since then WS & Dick are gone too. So sad they were all great guys.

Always try and picture what traveling would have been like to various gigs for Buddy when her first started out. Really like how your video crew puts in the artists that are mentioned in an interview ,briefly so a person not knowing what they look has 'a face to the name'.Many of the names Buddy mentions have never seen before. Well, I can say not me, so this is very informative. I was fortunate to see Buddy once when he was on the road drumming for Jerry Lee - also with Bob Moore on bass! From what I've heard, Mr. Chambers passed away himself, and has joined those great musicians in heaven. I've learned so much from these videos. Regarding Buddy Harman's sessions with Elvis, it's not uncommon for a session to have two drummers (The Allman Brothers Band had two drummers), and in addition to many of Elvis's recording sessions having multiple drummers, on many other sessions, de facto drummer DJ Fontana is credited with "drums" while Buddy Harman is credited with "percussion", a perfect example would be Elvis's rendition of "Are You Lonesome Tonight?"

Buddy Harman did NOT say he was the first drummer to ever play the Opry! He played there in the mid 50's with Carl Smith and there were other drummers on the Opry before that. For the record: The FIRST drummer to ever play drums on the Grand Old Opry was JOHN MONTE MOUNTJOY on Saturday Night December 30, 1944 while playing drums with BOB WILLS as a member of THE TEXAS PLAYBOYS. That is a known verifiable FACT. Wills was told he could not have his drummer on the Opry stage and he told his band to get on the bus as they were leaving. Opry officials conceded to allow Monte play his drums behind a curtain that concealed him and his drum kit BUT when the show started Wills told his band, "Get those drums out from behind that curtain!" And several of the musicians pushed those drums out in the middle of the band for all to see. Roy Acuff was so mad he broke his fiddle bow and cussed a blue streak. Judge Hay was so mad he went backstage and broke the transcription disc they were cutting. Minnie Pearl tells all about this event in her memoir she wrote back in the 80's - she and Eddy Arnold stood there and watched the whole show and they were BOTH glad to finally see drums on the Opry stage. I've personally known several musicians from Bob Wills Texas Playboys band that night who have told me the story including drummer Monte Mountjoy, bass man Teddy Adams, left handed fiddler Joe Holley, guitarist Jimmy Wyble, Bob Wills younger brother Luke (who was there as the bus driver), and other Playboys that were there. Johnny Gimble used to talk about this all the time and even Hank Garland was there that night and he remembered it distinctly as he was there in the audience with a friend having driven up from South Carolina just to see Wills and his band.

Hi Chris.... you’re right but Buddy was the first official staff drummer hired by the Opry to be on stage. The others you mentioned were there because the artist they played for was big enough to have their way with the Opry. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and comments. Best, Joe

What brand drums.........???? Really ????? This interviewed is lacking in meaningful questions....not to be rude, but the more important questions would be to ask Buddy what influenced him to play the backbeat so NICE AND STRONGLY on 2 & 4 on JINGLE BELL ROCK and the Brenda Lee tunes, etc etc etc......Important questions because he was a pioneer playing those backbeats whereas ROCK N ROLL drumming was still being formulated and many drummers were missing the mark. Buddy had a premonition how it should be played................what influenced him to do so.....WHO was he listening to? That's a few of the questions I would have liked to know the answers to.
