    Lou just totally inspired me. I desperately want to grow mangoes but it gets to cold for them in 9b northern calif. I’m thinking about ordering a mango and using lou’s ground bag method outside during the summer and then bringing it into my living room and treating it like a house plant during the winter. Has anyone ever tried this? Maybe I should try a star fruit while I’m at it?

      Normal mangoes get huge -- up to 100 feet at full maturity. I don't think they're a candidate for any kind of potting or greenhouse situation unless you can find a dwarf. Do dwarf mangoes exist?

    I love history and interesting about Pliny the elder knowing about 29 varities ! It`s true about the Romans bringing fruits to other country`s. Just like our modern wheat was a hybrid the Romans did to come about our modern type. Also a few years ago watched a video about an ancient vineyard that the Romans made digging deep trenches and with the limestone ground makes excellant wine still in existence in France !

    Hello Lou. Appreciate you passing on your knowledge. Of all the fig growing techniques out there, I believe your methods stand out, tough to beat family knowledge passed down and personal experience. One question I could not find how you mix your soil...part 2 of the soil fertilizers you use. Thanks ...Jorge

    Rainwater is better, isn't it?
    I do hope you are covering your trash cans with tight-fitting lids when not actually letting them fill with rainwater during storms. Please remember that mosquitoes will breed in any standing water.

    Hi, I purchased Ronde de Bordeaux online, and its got single lobe leaves. Do I have correct variety?

    • @loumonti10
      @loumonti10  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably not. Ronde De Bordeaux has a very distinguishable leaf pattern and it is not one lobed. However, sometimes, when a tree is very young, the are not characteristic to the variety. You might want to obtain one from another sourse, as Ronde De Bordeaux is an excellent cultivar! Good luck, Lou Monti

      Hi, Mike! I don't know why, because except for some Nematodes, my fig trees have all been very healthy for many decades. However, perhaps, some of our fellow Figsters out there would like to chime in? It might be a good idea to treat with an antifungal preparation, too. Thanks for watching, Lou Monti

    How come you use the inground bag technique for some but not all your trees?

    • @loumonti10
      @loumonti10  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do sometimes and sometimes I do not. Depending on the variety, how many of a variety I have, how much Winter storage room I have, and what My specific goals are at the time. Sometimes I prefer to grow them in grow bags above ground, or in the ground. Some of my trees are growing permanently in ground with no grow bag and will never be dug up and some trees are growing completely in the ground with no grow bag and will be dig up in the fall. The ground is a very safe place to grow the fig trees and to maintain them, as well. There are many reasons why I do all of these variable things. Take care! Lou Monti

    In the begining , what are the name the first Fig tree ?, I don't understant You

    • @loumonti10
      @loumonti10  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is called Sultane. It is a French Fig and I have had very good results with this variety in that same location for two years. The fig is tasty, productive, and isn't late in my zone, 7-A.

    Do you think the grow bag would help with nematodes? I’m in Florida so I would not need to dig them up.

    • @loumonti10
      @loumonti10  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, I really do not think so. It could actually exacerbate any Nematode problem that you might have. Have you confirmed the presence of Nematodes in your soil?

    • @loumonti10
      @loumonti10  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      My brother lives in Florida and I gifted him a beautiful Peter's Honey tree about 19 years ago. At first, for quite a few years it grew vigorously and produced a fair amount of fruit. Over the years, it began to produce less and less and I suspected that Nematodes was (and is) the reason. I've imagined many times that if I lived in Florida that I would keep my favorite fig trees in very large pots that had a permanent location, since Winter protection would be unnecessary. In this fashion, I could prepare my own soil mixes, absent the presence of any Nematodes. Good luck! LOU Monti

    • @loumonti10

      Hi there! For clarification on this subject, depending on the size of the tree, I've had good luck with 3,5,7, and 10 gallon pots. The pot (grow bag) should appropriately fit the size of the tree. For too many reasons to explain in a short essay, I would not reccomend less than three and (probably) not more than 10, although I haven't tried over 10, personally. Even this answer is prompting (tempting) me into a much longer, far more detailed response, but you will forgive me, perhaps, that I might reserve it for a future video dealing with this question with dedicated specificity at that time. It's a fascinating and extensive subject, one that even includes my father, whose many stories about Italy, included descriptions of how fig growers in that country used variations of this technique that he observed when he was a little boy. Take care! Lou Monti
