Great analysis and insights, as usual. As a Flyers fan I would like to see Michkov get the Calder but I don't think it is going to happen because of his mediocre line mates and reduced ice time. Would be fantastic to see him play on a line with someone like Will Smith or even that rascal Cutter. Oh well, you gotta play the cards you're dealt. Best of luck to all three- they are awesome!
Top notch NHL content right here. Personally I like Hutson but I am biased, he is on my fantasy team haha. If the Habs can keep up their improved play he will be a big part of it and it will raise his Calder stock. All 3 players are fun to watch, thanks for this video breaking down their approach. Loved Mac C. since I seen him light it up at SSM and think he can be the next Crosby. He's the total package of what you'd want for a franchise player and he's still a teenager!
Celebrini looks next level in the eye test. I've seen all 3 games between VGK and SJ. In each game, when his line comes out it looks like a mismatch and he tilts the ice in SJ favor drastically. He's doing that to what might be the best and most disciplined team in the league - super impressive stuff.
If trends remain, Celebrini wins fairly. Coming from a HABS fan, I could argue that a defenseman outscoring forwards should give him an edge, and yes it is pretty amazing. And also making a case that he's playing on a mediocre team for most of the start. That can be said of all three players. Celebrini playing on the WORST team at center is amazing. And his work ethic is just incredible. I love the way he never watches the play. He's always in the mix. That is one detail I just hate about certain other players is when they make a pass, they stand there and watch what happens for a second or 2 before getting their legs going again. That was the biggest beef I had with Drouin's play style in MTL. And I see SLAF falling into that pastern sometimes and I hope he corrects it soon because it could be a big key into making him that PPG player MTL wants from their number 1 overall pick! He's really strong on the puck and makes nice plays. But he gets caught watching too much. Anyways, it's been a fun season to watch so far! GHG!
Firstly, your videos with the analysis is so on point. Few do it as well. Michkov, Hutson, & Celebrini are all phenomenal & I hope they reach the heights they are able to. That said I really think the Sharks have done there rebuild the right way. With the young guys they have & have coming it looks very good for them in the future.

I think it's also important to consider Dustin Wolf. Goalies are a lot easier to overlook for trophies like this given they fact their plays are a lot more quite and deal a lot more with having to be efficient with movement, as positioning for a block is their precious resource, but Wolf is like, one of the sole reasons that Calgary is in a position that could allow them to get a wildcard spot right now. Additionally, while I don't think that Jackson Blake from the Carolina Hurricanes is currently in contention for the Calder, he's certainly one of the best rookies in the league at the moment. He's a remarkable winger, is fantastic in ensuring possession in any situation having a corsi average of over 60%, and honestly just plays solid Brind'Amour style hockey. As there is still a half of a season left, there's a possibility that if he get more experience over the course of the season, that he can get his points up, especially if Brindy ups his TOI by even like 2 mins, maybe giving him a chance on the 3rd line, or 2nd line on a less risky team. All-in-all, he was a pretty great pick-up for Carolina in the draft. I'm sure that he is soon to develop into a solid playmaker within the Carolina system on par with Aho and Jarvis. Plus, I think that he can become a fairly solid 30-goal man in the following seasons, especially if he can get some playoff experience, which is looking extraordinary probable.
Tied with Makar the last month.. and Habs have a great young team... but imagine if Hutson was playing with Toews... on the PP with MacKinnon and Rantanen...
From seeing Lane Hutson Play at the Bell centre 3 Times this season I can tell you guys, he is the real deal 🤝 every Time that this kid touches the puck he creates some high scoring chances its crazy
I know Bedard was touted as the new generational talent but honestly, so far I am more impressed with Celebrini and the more I see from him the more I think he has a higher ceiling than Bedard.
Either Celebrini or Hutson for sure. Michkov will have a great career, but right now the other two are already fairly complete players on both sides of the puck while essentially matching his offensive numbers. It's actually insane to have two players like that in the race.
As a habs fan, Celebrini is just on a different level. Yes he scores goals, but he is also very reliable in D which is rare for a rookie. I should have been considered in the 4 nations roster.
Bedard had looked incredible since the coaching change too. Him, Macklin, Fantilli and Michkov are all going to be elite. I still think Byfield has the potential too. Frank Nazar might turn out to be a top 20 winger too. Hawks have a bright future especially with Oliver Moore, Levshunov, Lardis and Rinzel. Vanacker might be a diamond in the rough too
For me it's Hutson on top. D is a tougher position to excel at than C. To be 1st unit PP quarterback at 20 and leading all rookies in pts is beyond nuts. No disrespect to Macky Celeb.
Michkov point totals literally say he dines on the powerplay, around half his goals and 3/4 of his assists are on the man advantage. Has shown he can be streaky on his point production as he had 5 and 7 game point droughts. Hutson has getting more consistent points due to in part on the powerplay and his dynamic play-making. His blocked shot assist vs the Caps led to the OT winner by Suzuki. Celebrini does have reasonable point consistency and would have likely been leading if not for the hip injury. Can imagine voting could be down to a literal photo finish at the end of the season. Currently: Hutson 32, Michkov 30, Celebrini 29.
Nice breakdown but it was such a tease that this is a cross generational comparison. You're right that it may not happen again for us to get to witness 3 generations of players all excel and make headlines at the same time.
I would have to give the Calder to Hutson, especially if he continues his pace. But this video made me open my eyes to Celebrini. It's really between those 2. Any team would be lucky to have them. It's just hard to overlook a D-man racking it up like Hutson is doing
Lane Hutson is by far the most exciting player to watch out of these top 3 Calder candidates, and the fact that he's the leading rookie scorer as a d-man should make him the obvious Calder favourite if he can play just as well in the second half of the season as he did in the first half.
This whole video had me grinning like an idiot and rewinding to actually see the plays. Celebrini is looking great. But hutson is doing things NHL rookie defenseman don't do. For me it's hutson for the calder. Strong rookie forwards happen every season but defenseman is a while other level. He's constantly in the rookie conversations with all the NHL hockey legends. Orr. Housley coffee Lindstrom and more recent makar and Hughes. The fact that he's a damn sets him apart.
Celebrini have a Slight edge as now,but D man is way more difficult to play(Hutson is a copy version of Hughes).Michkov is definitly in the mix and if Wolf get Calgary in Playoff,he should be too.
I wonder how well Hutson will do in a long playoff run. I sincerely hope I'm wrong, but I wonder if his size will keep him from playing as well "once the going gets rough". I really hope I'm wrong about this.
As a Habs fun, it sucks that the year we got to draft 1st overall, we didn't get a Matthews, Celebrini type of player. :( Thank God Hutson got picked in the second round
I hope we can get more basic broadcasting though. Ratings are tanking because of the dumbed down presentations. And it’s cringe to watch nationally televised broadcasts. Thank god we have Detroit commentators but the advertising is still saturated. Great video though!! 👍
Celebrini or Hutson. If Hutson keep adding points and end close with Celebrini, i will have to go with Hutson, cause you expect points for a forward, but not from a D, and certainly not that much point. He's only the third rookie in nhl history to lead in points at the half season, the other 2... Bobby Orr and Nicklas Lindstrom. Becomes also the fastest rookie D in CH history to reach 30 points, second is Chris Chelios. That look good on a resumé
@Daniels656993 indeed... im afraid that they already put celebrini's name on the trophy. So-called experts say that Celebrini is making a big impact on his team and make other players better. I dont know if they have something against Hutson but I don't see them talk allt about him. If he keep the same pace he had the 9 last game, he will have 85-90 points this season. But I'm sure he will hut at least more then 60. He don't get the attention he deserves... he changed in part the face of the offense and pp. How he attract players to him to leave his teammates open. His lateral movements, control of the puck and the creativity he brings every night. I dont see the sharks being a way better team with Celebrini and I already know that some people reason will be that he didn't have the same team Hutson have, he missed around 8-10 games... thinking that way, if the player that have the most point at the end of the season shouldn't win if the team he play for is a top team. But at the end of the day, I would choose a defenseman over a forward if they are close with their stats.
The nhl has prolly the best farming system around in sports. If only football did half of this stuff cause they rrun through qauterbacks but the supremely difficult job of being a goalie is alot easier to transition into pros with. Thats no accident every step on getting talent up to the nhl is working so well its keeping us hockey fans fed on interesting players in every position. And unlike the nfl one superstar doesnt win ya rings on a regular basis. Idk why im comparing maybe cause im texan but yeah i wish all sports were this consistent
So weird as a 40 year old Habs fan to hear Montreal being talked about in any kind of positive way, much less having our own Calder chaser. Hopefully next year they can come out of the gate a little more even footed
Celebrini is so good, but I fear that his rushes straight up the dots is going to result in his first concussion. It only takes 1 D to play the man, rather than the puck and I predict he is going to get lit up.

But we got Demidov ;)
I hope we can get more basic broadcasting though. Ratings are tanking because of the dumbed down presentations. And it’s cringe to watch nationally televised broadcasts.
Thank god we have Detroit commentators but the advertising is still saturated.
Great video though!! 👍
Emil Heineman, thats all.
Yes! Most likely hutson
@@johnq2068but Heineman deserves votes! Considering his TOI on the 4th line, he doing great! Not gonna win it but he deserves some attention.
My guess is, it will be a CELEBRation
This is the future I’m ready.GO LEAFS GO 1st place let goooooo!!!!!!!
💀💀💀
@KSGOALHORN2025 no Calder on the leafs this ain’t about you. Go habs!
As if they will win the cup..keep praying !!!
This as well. I think too many overlook how much harder it is for a rookie defenceman it is to score as many or more points as a fwd.
Let’s go Hutson✌️
Celebrini and Hutson were teammates last year.
if you had a deeper voice this would be such a good nhl commercial
These New Young Players and past 5 years they will be dominating the NHL with Connor Bedard
Hutson being put on 1st powerplay started Habs success
Took too long for that too happen
Wolf snubbed
The nhl has prolly the best farming system around in sports. If only football did half of this stuff cause they rrun through qauterbacks but the supremely difficult job of being a goalie is alot easier to transition into pros with. Thats no accident every step on getting talent up to the nhl is working so well its keeping us hockey fans fed on interesting players in every position. And unlike the nfl one superstar doesnt win ya rings on a regular basis. Idk why im comparing maybe cause im texan but yeah i wish all sports were this consistent
Yeah, but Hutson is a D-man! You can praise forwards, but which defenseman can put up the points like Hutson does?
Michikov taking the hardest hit of his life from his own teammate last night😂😂
So weird as a 40 year old Habs fan to hear Montreal being talked about in any kind of positive way, much less having our own Calder chaser. Hopefully next year they can come out of the gate a little more even footed
Celebrini is so good, but I fear that his rushes straight up the dots is going to result in his first concussion.
It only takes 1 D to play the man, rather than the puck and I predict he is going to get lit up.
Marco Kasper will be a Calder finalist, calling it now
No chance. Maybe Axel Sandin-Pellikka, but Kasper is nowhere near top line potential. He's middle six, best case Ontario.
