Hi Bo, I control my Mutantbrain from the Digitone and have slight latencies with the clock. Do I have to change the trigger time in the global settings of the Mutantbrain? Have you had similar clock problems? BR, Dauna
This is OK, but Bo, please clearly state out in your vids that you are reviewing stuff being send to you, it will set you apart from product placers ;)
Does the FH-2 work with the Digitakt via USB Midi? It doesn't work with the Hermod, but I think it is a Digitakt problem? I have to use it via a midi cable.
I have an octatrack and it is amazing. You don't need VCA, EG, VCF or FX in your rack, cause the octatrack has all that already. And with the Mutant Brain I'm sending 4 LFOs to the modular, so I don't need these modules either. Result: I have lots of space to put cool sound sources :-)
Hola Manu! Question about LFOs to Eurorack. Is it smooth? or you can listen the "steps" when slow modulation?. I don't know if you know what I mean... It has to do with the midi resolution...
That "bo" sample is a thing of nightmares. And to be productive... check out the tubbutec utune. It is a pretty feature packed mid-cv / quantizer and microtonal swiss army knife.
4 CV and 12 Gate outputs? Compare again to the outputs of the BSP. I suspect the fact that the gates outnumber the CVs by so much means they are intended for sequencing drum tracks (which generally do not change pitch). I guess they don't change velocity either, but you could have, say, two of the gates controlling a snare but with different pre-assigned velocities.
Great Vid! Would also suggest making a video where u talk about the rack (compressor? Etc) underneath your Eurorack. Think a lot of people would be interested
Hey Daniel! Good eye, yes! The software and firmware you see in the Mutant Brain is a commercially licensed adaptation of the CV.OCD by Jason Hotchkiss. We've been collaborating in ways on it over the past some months after working out the licensing arrangement.
Hi Bo and thanks for this...just getting started on this madness! I am going to use the Deluge with midi out into Poly2 for the same ends....I hope :-)
Sounds fantastic. Would love to know what all the other modules are as I'd like to replicate using my Digitone as a first venture into scarry modular world?
Love this! I was wondering if there was a solution for the opposite direction - eurorack controlling tracks on the digitakt. E.g sending interesting patterns from eurorack to the hats track in the Digitakt. Thanks!
no, you would need a CV to Midi converter. Doepfer has a couple modules for this, if not, through Expert Sleepers Es-6 or Es-8 and software you could do it
You have an analog 4 right? Have you tried sequencing your eurorack with it? I’m curious about it because I’m planning on using my A4 to start out on eurorack, but I can’t find many videos of people doing that.
Thanks BoBeats, can you somehow translate MIDI velocity into voltage level? Will that trigger eurorack drum modules at different levels like some old Simmons drum brains or do you also need to trigger VCAs after each drum modual? Thanks!
I'm using it with the dfam that has a specific velocity input in the patch bay. If it has an input like that you can send it there and it should work fine.
Yes this should be possible. I think it would be pretty much the same standard setup as I use: midi channels 1 and 2 are used to control CV A/B and C/D
Great module this one Bo, one thing: as I see it has 4cv outputs , so I can only send 4 midi different sequences (pitch) from my external midi sequencer ? Hence the gate outputs are mainly for triggers and gates that send length information not pitch?
Yes. So you could do say 2 voices using 2 cv for pitch and 2 cv for velocity, then 2 gates for triggering. Or 4 voices no velocity using 4 cv and 4 gates.
Hey Bo: 1. Any chance you could share the .syx file you used in this video? 2. Have you managed to send .syx files to the Mutant Brain from the computer's USB (using Midi-Ox or Elektron Transfer), via the Digitakt's 'Midi Thru', to the Mutant Brain? Thanks, Ceri
@@BoBeats interesting; my mutant brain doesn't trigger any of the LEDs (other than top left ,'signal recieved' and top right flashing in time to MIDI BPM rate) by default. Oddly, I already have a CV.ocd too and *that* does work with my Digitakt.
Nice vid’!!i have a weird stuff with the duo digitakt/mutant brain...:it’s not the same octave range on the digitakt than on the mutant brain ?Do you have the same deal?
Great video, i am new to this world and currently using maschine mk3 more recently with moog mother 32. I am interested in basic eurorack setup, could this be used with reaktor blocks and hardware?
Sure! you could send midi from the maschine mk3 to the eurorack using this. Not sure about Reaktor integration, I don’t really know how well it integrates with CV gear
I'm awaiting the new Circuit tracks and the Mutant Brain seems the perfect solution for getting it to speak to my Eurorack. MIDI is something rather new to me, so I'm not exactly sure how to connect the Mutant Brain to my computer so that I can configure the channels. Can I use the Circuit as the hub for this connection? Or should I use my Focusrite? Or a cable/adapter to just plug the M Brain into my Mac? By the way, I really enjoy your channel and your review of the new Circuit convinced me that I need one of my own! I am going to subscribe right now!
Hey Bo! I'm currently trying to utilize the Digitakt in the same way since I just got a new Moog tower with the 60hp at the top. I control everything form the Takt, so I didn't want to buy a seq module. I was curious if you used the CV.OCD at all? The only thing pushing me toward that as opposed to the Mutant Brain is that it's standalone and won't take any hp from my rack. I was about to pull the trigger ont he Mutant Brain after I saw this video, but I just found the CV.OCD and I'm torn!
I think the best one at this moment is the polyend poly, because it has 8 cv outputs each with pitch, velocity and modulation, but it’s about double the price as yours € 449,- Nice vid Greetz👍✌️
If anyone wants to know how to set up your DIGITAKT to run with Mutant Brains for individual drum modules check this out: th-cam.com/video/3co0Zb4vSi0/w-d-xo.html
@@BoBeats hahaha thanks man. I dont have the pro vid gear so just focus on brief processes and then writing notes about it about anything i struggle with. Figuring others may as well. Best way to set it up would be on Channel 10 with individual notes for all trigs, but i wanted to keep it using the default profile it ships with to make it easy.
Your selection of modules is Very uncluttered! And the modules are very good choices for their straight forward architecture. I like it . Except for the Arturia which I recently checked out but didn’t care for the imbedded functions on the keyboard (yuk)and shift keys. The euro rack sounds good though.. Peace Christo ✌🏻✌🏻🐕🐕🛸🛸👍🏻👍🏻🎶🎶🕺🕺👽👽🙏🙏🔦🔦👏🏻👏🏻
Hi, great video, i also love my Digitakt! I am wondering if i am going for eurorack modules or just skip them because it would be adictive and expensive. Your series hjelp me with this question though! But, of all of those you have mounted and tested so far, what is your favorites modules? Would you expand from this rack system to a bigger or are you keeping IT small like this? Thanks
Hey! Thanks! I am moving from 6U to 12U but its more for the channel and to be able to review and check out more modules. I could have stayed on 6U and learned a lot. But 6U is still "small". One module... Well I still think Clouds is amazing fun, and the Erica Synths Black Hole DSP 2 is fun as well. Love FX units atm because they add something to all my other synths.
That i can understand and i appreciate that you are using your time to take us through this journey into the modular world!!! Now iam a patreon of yours too, great stuff Bo!!!
Thanks a lot for your videos, Bo - astonishingly you are pointing exactly the questions i had right in time. Just connected via social medias with you to get the latest news by you :)
Side note: These tracks sound great. I really dig the second one in this video. So I’m currently learning how to produce with my Digitakt, and a buddy of mine just got around $10,000 in Eurorack gear. Long story, but let’s just say I have a feeling this will lead into my journey with it all. He plans to build a couple smaller setups and He told me he plans to let me use them as we swap and trade units. I feel the Mutant Brain and Digitakt is a great option for controlling them. I do have a Beatstep Pro but I also love working with the Digitakt’s sequencer. So this video is super helpful. Thank you 🙏 I can see my self going this route while also using the Digi’s internal sample based functions.
Bo, one thing I do not understand. Why purchase all these different sequencers and connection modules trying to patch all this stuff together? Why not just buy one great computer with a great DAW like Cubase? The computer with it's built in DAW sequencer takes care of all of this nonsense and also records the session at the same time for easy callback and editing. My Cubase sequencer is the most versatile and complex sequencer I have ever owned and will do any job easily without all these crazy connections.
Using a DAW is ofc the most straight forward way to do things. There is no real denying the strengths and cost efficiency of a DAW. However, people do not go for hardware synthesizer rigs or eurorack because its effective. It has to do with the fun of having physical objects to work with, the explorative nature of eurorack, the actual patching of physical objects. Many different aspects which might not have a utility in itself, but rather have to do with the feel of it. I mean why do guitarists buy particular guitars? Oftentimes it comes down to a combination of sound and feel, not some objective list of functions.
AHH, It's that mojo nature feeling thing. I wish I had time for that, but I never do so I tend to purchase full featured hardware synths these days. Maybe that is why my modular sits dormant most of the time. Each hardware synth I purchase has its own Mojo but in a full featured midi/usb, patch memory kind of way. Thanks Bo for the reply I really did not see the reason why you went in that direction, but now I understand.

isnt digitakt midi port also transmit din sync out of the box?

Can't wait for FH-2 release - looks like such a dream team for DT + Eurorack setup!
I just scoped the FH2 on ModularGrid and may I say Sir, that it looks like an awesome bit o' kit !
Does the FH-2 work with the Digitakt via USB Midi? It doesn't work with the Hermod, but I think it is a Digitakt problem? I have to use it via a midi cable.
The conversion rate on the Canadian Peso can be some fairly tricky math . . . . . smooth groove amigo
BO but how to send Sysex fie to brains? I can't find info on this anywhere

apart from being very similar (if not identical) to cv.ocd, the sysex editor is absolutely IDENTICAL! I hope there's a reason for this...
I believe this is some kind of licensing going on. All legit at least but I do not know exact details :-)

Yes this should be possible. I think it would be pretty much the same standard setup as I use: midi channels 1 and 2 are used to control CV A/B and C/D
thats great news for me! thank u very much Bo!!!
