Will get insulation for the half liter nalgene. My unboiled uninsulated water froze in my nalgenes on orizaba right side up. Good idea about freezing your Nalgene bottles and testing them upside down at home.

Generally speaking any thermos flask with moving parts is bad for cold weather. Simpler is better. I have also found in the case of one brand, cheaper is better. Their expedition line failed catastrophically on me in winter. I could not open them in freezing temperatures owing to the strength of the vacuum. Their more basic models however worked very well. This is an established Scandinavian brand, so not working in winter really surprised me. I guess what looks good on Autocad, doesn't necessarily perform in the field. What Aaron says about testing is very true, and I learnt that the hard way.

    Thank you for making this.
Agree with Nalgene bottles for cold weather. Found an aftermarket lid that had a smaller secondary cap that is easier to drink from without spilling.
Have also used a Kleen Kanteen metal bottle but realized I dare not drink out of it at -40 for fear of my lips sticking to the metal so just used it to top up other containers. It did have a nice D ring on the top so if it froze I could use a stick for leverage which was nice.
Thermos tip, fill it with boiling water and let it sit a few minutes. Start boiling a second pot of water. Use the minutes old thermos water for your meal or wash up and add the fresh boiled water to the pre-warmed container and it will still warmer (read unfrozen) longer.

Pro tip for using a water bladder in the winter, after you take a drink blow the water in the hose back into the bladder, this will stop the hose from freezing. Only recommended for day trips 😊

Great tip! I actually tried that on a climb - it got so cold so quick that the tube acted like a clogged artery, with leftover water in the hose quickly choking out the whole hose. Fun times!

My water carry has always been a bladder/drink tube/bite valve. It never occurred to me that my insulated drink tube could freeze. Thank you for this tip. I need to blow water out of the drink tube when it's cold + I need to start carrying a small Nalgene water bottle for backup.
After watching other videos of people stranded on I95 for 19-20 hours I've started filling my 1Qt Stanley with boiling water & taking it out with me to the car B4 driving anywhere during cold wintertimes. Yes, mine has that drink insert that needs to be unscrewed so I can drink a mouthful at a time. Yes, I've attached a ziplok baggie to the thermos that holds Freeze Dried Coffee.
    Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada

Once that hose freezes up, even with a neoprene insulation, you're forced to hold the awkward water bladder. It was an educational experience.

Once the hose freezes, it's over. That's why I gave up on them.

Went bow hunting in single digits one morning and brought along a thermos that i had used at work for a considerable time, and it leaked on my rope on steps…didnt notice until i grabbed my coffee before daylight and it was half full…bad news. Never leaked when it was warm but was consistent when it was cold.

Nalgene bottles have two types, also with narrow entry. Then even if fail from your hands, only several drops will escape , not all.

bladders will freeze, neoprene doesn’t work in really cold temp

    • @ALinsdau

I've had good success with neoprene at -40ºF/C when combine with a down bag. The neoprene by itself won't cut it at those temps.
