Donald, I have missed your videos. I know you were under the weather for a while. Hope you are doing better. I have been watching this particular video for the last 9 years and have dreamed of owning a set of cultivators like this. I finally got around to ordering a set and they were delivered today. I got them all assembled and am just waiting on dry weather to use them. Take Care my friend.....Tim
@kmaughe ... Skipping a row simply makes it much easier to control weeds / grasses and also makes harvesting a breeze. Corn is one of the few vegetables I don’t skip rows with because of pollination issues. I till approx 2 acres of garden space but usually only have about half of that planted at any one time. This gives me room to plant the fall garden while still having the summer vegetables producing. This year I’m trying something new with the fall garden. Video coming soon.... Donald
@palmerballer1 ... cultivating is removing any small grass and weeds that are coming up. Depending on the weather, corn is cultivated 1-2 times before lay by. Once it gets too tall it's on its own........Donald
@JBL3470 ... the 5 ft. cages worked much better. The plants still out grew the cages but held up the plants much longer than the shorter ones I was using before. They would also work much better for the cucumbers........Donald
@webcajun Thanks the videos! I took your advice, searched out Stavens, and then placed an order there! The only place I've found the right stuff without having to buy a whole "kit". This will complete our gardening attachment set up with a new toolbar to go with the tines / hiller discs / shanks we already have. Should be much better than the old "v" shaped frame cultivator used in previous years which was a pain just because it hung too far out the back of the tractor Thanks Again!.
I live in texas so i know about planting year around. What are you planting right now and when do you start your winter garden? What do you usually plant in your winter garden? Keep up the awesome videos
@marieatthelake ... corn is usually twice before lay by. Other vegetables just depend on how much grass and weeds are growing. Lot of rain means lots of grass........Donald
@Praxxus55712 ... did you notice how slow I was going? That way you don't take out too many plants before getting back straight. Holding the camera behind me while driving the tractor was the tricky part. lol.......Donald
Hi Donald, love your gardening vids but you need a good American built Farmall Cub to work with. best garden tractor ever built and made in Louisville.ky. keep up the good work. I do lots of gardening here in KY but with red Farmall tractors. take care.
Hi, Thanks so much for your videos. After watching your videos we have made several changes in our gardening techniques - - and it is going great so far. We have used a quick hitch and row builder for the first time and just love them. Can you help me with a supplier for the adjustable shank cultivator as we can't find one anywhere. Have been gardening for a long time and just goes to show one is never too old to learn something new! Thanks again. Patricia
That is much easier than using a hoe on your crop and I have not forgotten your tip on using an empty row between each used row. I have a middle buster plow, a PTO driven tiller, and a landscaping rake and need a cultivator now. I am now looking for a good turning plow and think that I know where I can get one locally.
@henrycems ... I always say whatever works is the way to do it. I would have never guessed I'd be picking peas and okra from a golf cart but hey it works.......Donald
@connjamm19 ... cultivating is the process of removing / killing grass and weeds on the side of the row and in the middles. We don't get our first frost till in Nov. or Dec........Donald
@pinetar100 ... I have something growing in the garden year round. Jan and Feb are usually wet and somewhat cold. Louisiana has mild winters........Donald
Do you run your cultivator through the rows BEFORE the crop comes up, just to listen the soil some, or do u wait til grass starts growing after the crop is up? Planted my corn 6 days ago and haven't seen any sprouts yet. But the furrows are starting to crack open, so that may be a good sign. There is a "crust" over the top of the furrow. I hope the sprouts can break through it!! Thanks
I’ll normally wait till I see grass growing before running the cultivators. If you can keep the top of the row moist the seeds will have no problem coming through…..Donald
I'm planning on getting a cultivator and trying this method in the upcoming season. My question is what do you do when the plants are too tall to go over with the tractor? Would you recommend the Hoss wheeled hand cultivator at that point?
When the plants get too tall it’s time to use a hoe in between and right next to the plants. As for the middles, I skip a row between rows, giving me room to run the tractor and tiller to clean them up. If you don’t have the room to skip a row then the easiest would be to run a walk behind tiller to keep them clean. I’ve only used the Hoss with the planter attachment and can’t comment on how well it cultivates……Donald
Can you share the brand of the cultivator in the video. Having the ability to change the depths that the sweeps work seems like a unique feature. I am in the market for a single row cultivator but most can only be adjusted from side to side. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.
The last videos I made was in 2017. Hadn’t been feeling 100% lately which is the reason I hadn’t done any this season. Will try to shoot some more when I feel a little better…..Donald
This video was shot using equipment from Stevens Tractor here in Louisiana. There were returned after the project was completed. If used properly (running only a few inches below the surface in tilled soil) they should hold up pretty well…..Donald
@dontlooknowu2late ... Hey patricia, Google "Stevens Tractor Company" and they'll have em. Since you're using a quick hitch request they build one for a Standard Cat. 1 quick hitch otherwise the lower pins may not match.....Donald
I miss your videos, Mr. Donald. Rest in peace.
I learned a lot from Donald way back then. Thanks again.
"Heyyy how yall' doin" this guy is the best spokesman for small timer agriculture
That beats the heck out of hoeing the rows any old day!
I like your dogs, I love you videos. The music wow..... I love the Cajuns
Nice video, Donald. This was my first year using a "hiller" and a cultivator is in the budget for next season. Thanks for the great info!

Depending on how tall the grass is it may take a couple of passes to get it all. Good luck….Donald

Lucy had the right idea right from the start. Find a soft place in the cool shade a stretch out. Let the humans do all the work. Take care.

This was exactly what I was looking for. But now finding this attachment for a cat-0 tractor. That might be a another challenge

@mdcrab68 ...The tool bar I'm using is 60". I set the outside sweeps about center of the rear wheels or maybe just inside that......Donald
@socalledjay1 ... those cultivators are on loan from Stevens Tractor, wish they were mine. Saving my nichols and dimes now..........Donald
@marshall81174 ... glad you enjoyed and hope it was helpful.........Donald

That is why I want one of those so badly and will get one as soon as I can afford it.
