We had our doubts about going to Venice. Sure, the pictures we saw looked perfect-but these days, filters and AI can make just about everything look perfect. Videos can have selective editing, for that matter, but we really do our best to share a true reflection of our experience. That being said, we've learned that experiences can vary greatly due to many factors out of our control.
All of which is a long way of saying that Venice surprised us. When it comes to creating the best possible experience at a new (and popular) destination, we've learned to avoid the main attraction as the first stop. In this case, if we'd gone straight to St. Mark's Square, we might have been turned off by the crowds and touristy nature of the attraction. Instead, we took a casual walk to a more local part of Venice. We chose a restaurant based on a recommendation from the person who checked us into our vacation rental. We did end up visiting St. Mark's Square later-and we weren't overly impressed. Luckily, it wasn't our first impression. We ended up going back late that night for what seemed like a private concert. These experiences can't be planned. We've learned to go with the flow and stay open to exploring with no pressing agenda. This isn't just our approach in Europe; it has served us well in the States too, from charming East Coast towns to National Parks.

Venice is not overrated, just overcrowded with tourists it’s become unlivable for locals, as well….
Yeah, and tourists getting angry that there are too many tourists too…

While Italy has been an amazing experience, Venice has been our biggest love! 4th trip this year & two weeks in May in a beautiful apartment overlooking a wonderful Campo. It's magical to see Venice wake up and go to sleep. People that never saw Venice wake up never really saw, the true Venice!
I have really enjoyed this trip. There are 14 steps to my second floor and hope they keep me heart healthy. Gosh the food sure looked yummy. Fun boat rides and interesting how they start their day. Thank you so much!

A Norwgian song in the end....in Italy....by a American youtuber..Nice. I recomend a roundtrip on a bike in this region ( bikeshoes in Venice, not recomendit, ask me hehe) How the history of the Island where "maked" is fascinating
Everything in Europe that you want to see, visit, stay. is uphill. I never walked downhill, ever, in 6 trips. Never!!
Sure, how can it not be overrated a city founded more than 1500 years ago mostly on ARTIFICIAL ISLANDS (something still not easy or economically practical to do even today) with a magnificent architecture, full of history and traditions; the city who connected West and East, able to create a trading empire which lasted 1000 years.
After all the world is full of cities like Venice (look Venice in Las Vegas for example, it's even better).
What said that man crucified (at least that's what they say) more than 2,000 years ago? "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do."
I hope someone can forgive people who instead talk about Venice without knowing what they are saying.

People told me I’d be disappointed with Venice because I’d romanticized it in my head, but they were so wrong. It was magical. I love that it exceeded your expectations too! Great video once again ❤
Great time ! We brought our bikes in 2006 and rode a lot of the passes that are in the Giro d Itália it was amazing The Gavia the Stelvio and Mortirolo stayed in Lake Como and Bormio . Lake Como is a must if you go back !

When I was in Venice 5 years ago with a tour group, we stayed at a hotel rigjt on the canal near the train station. Our pre-paid hotel price with the tour group was far less than your accommodations, and we had an elevator. I recommend people check our tour groups like Trafalgar or costsaver if they would like to pay one price and let the tour package take care of everything for you, even moving your bags to and from your room accommodations. You also get a lot of free time and expedited entrance to major sites, like the coliseum, the Vatican, etc. Hop on hop off buses in cities are cheap and better than renting cars.

My daughter and her new husband just went to Italy for 3 weeks,his dad has a home in Rome, so they had a place to stay and they travelled by bus and train and rented a car once ,she said never again will she drive again,,lol..there’s going to be there for Xmas , we were invited but this year but we can’t go till next year,,have eye surgery on the 15th of dec,, to much pressure for eyes the doctors said,, and we need to save ,,, looks like all of yous had a really good time,,

I have only been to Venice three times but it is one of my favorite cities.
We visited Venice twice and were not disappointed. It's a fascinating city to visit and experience. Two gondola rides are memories of each trip. One time, it was on a Rick Steves 21 day European trip...Best trip ever.
Just curious - have you ever been approached by the Travel Channel or anyone to produce a travel show for them? This is better than anything on regular tv.
My husband and I just returned from 3 wks in Europe, including 4 days in Venice and we LOVED Venice! Such a charming city, beautiful weather, no real crowds, great food and beauty around every corner. Highly recommend!

I went to Brugge, the Venice of Belgium and it was amazing... from everything I have researched, Brugge is better than Venice.
You can't be serious (I visited Bruges years ago)... Free to have your own opinion but what does it mean "from everything I searched" ? That's ridiculous, as is ridiculous to compare Venice with Bruges

Aaaand, I'm away from TH-cam for a bit and this happens...I live about an hour away from Venice. Been to all the places and done all the things, and still have a million more to do. Would have loved to know you were here and show you all of it. Cinque Terre is one of our favorite areas. And there is so much to see in Venice (we finally broke down and did a tour after visiting on our own dozens of times). Just got back from a tour of Sicily this past weekend.
Nothing like Bill and Marc- you can tell they have been friends (more like brothers) for some time. It’s always love and busting chops 😂

Mark we completely understand the “stairs”. Just came back from 26 days in Greece and only one hotel with an elevator. We definitely overpacked for our first vacation aboard and as 70+ years old, it was a challenge. My husband counted each stair with you! Lol

most of the locals we dealt with spoke some measure of English. At times we had to repeat our question or/and change our wording but 90% of our communication went well@@Hugo-Hernandez

Thanks for taking us on this fabulous trip to Italy. Have I mentioned I'm sooooo envious. On the positive side, I didn't have to go all the way to Italy to bump my head multiple times....I did that at an antique B&B in Taos, NM. I bumped it so many times in the same place it finally started bleeding.
When I was a young child I lived in Italy with my Grandparents when my father was in Vietnam. I have been to Venice many times and always go to see the Bridge of Sighs as that's one of my early memories. I have been to Venice when it's been jam packed with tourists and when it's been deserted. Being able to stay a few days allowed us to take in many more scenes that you otherwise can't when you do it as a day trip. I love Venice and am glad you found it nice as wel.

And couldn't agree more, Rick Steves is the best for the Europe advice. I still remember the amazing dinner we had on an out-of-the-way canal there thanks to his guidebook. I've been to more European countries than national parks here at home, so this series was fun to see you all there!

Venice is A CITY is not Disneyland. We are citizen. Overrwted? Maybe( so you don't walk random instead keep your right side on the streets or stay in the middle of the bridges for a selfie).

It’s so funny to see a full sized F-150/1500 in Europe. We in North America see them as a “normal” sized truck. In a European city they just look massive and out of place.

Venice may be crowded, a bit stinky at certain times of year, and even overrated, but it’s Venice! There’s only one-you gotta do it. It was wonderful when we were there some 30 years ago. Looks like it still is.
Ordering a Fiorentina in Venice is like ordering Sushi in French country town. Yes, you, can, but why? Venice has a lot of culinary options, ranging from the traditional fish/seafood/meat dishes to the genuine Kasher/Jewish cusine.

I took my 2 granddaughters on a 3 week grand Italy tour. I saw things totally different through their eyes & they each got one special request to do. One selected to see Juliet’s Balcony and the other wanted to eat a slice of pizza in front of the Leaning Tower. This trip was also educational for I hired a private guide to visit the Uffizi Gallery for 3 hours at a total of $300 and they loved it so much they wanted more.
I lived near Venice in the mid 70's, way back when there was no need to fret about crowds. It was sublime. The osso bucco we enjoyed in a tiny ristorante away from the Square was so wonderful I can taste it to this day. Thank you for taking me back to my home away from home so long ago...

Renting a car in Italy is okay, except for going to Venice. Better off using the train or bus to get there and use the vaporetto and walking while there.
