I don't know if there will ever be so effortlessness in reference and musicality. She went everywhere, and wrote the best horn solos around. She just sang them. And did she ever. No matter the genre, she covered it with not just ease, but a thrill. She said she liked telling a story, and that's what I remember the first time I saw her on the Grammy Awards. I recall the audience went wild and that's when it was not just the deep inside of me that got stirred She stopped traffic with that beautiful voice. So natural, silky and pleasing It's a moment in existence exquisite and painful. Thankfully, she was very prolific. Thank you so much Ella!
Savoy, the home of sweet romance Savoy, it wins you at a glance Savoy, gives happy feet a chance, to dance. Your form, just like a clinging vine Your lips, so warm and sweet as wine Your cheek, so soft and close to mine, devine How my heart is singin' While the band is swingin' Never tired of rompin' And stompin' with you, at the Savoy, What joy, a perfect holiday Savoy, where we can glide and sway Savoy, There let me stomp away with you.
one of my favourite albums of Ella is her live concert in Rome in 1958. She does a version of Stompin at the Savoy where Oscar Peterson must be on piano, and OP does something to make her laugh in mid-line - and she improvises a line 'Oscar we're through'. I really REALLY wish that was on film/video file somewhere

There is something so sultry about the opening she and Peterson give here, and once they move into the hard swing, it's like they defy gravity with their rhythmic freedom. The stage is so heavy with talent, I don't know how it withstood the pressure.
@direfranchement I think that's a pretty perfect analysis. I've always thought Ella was the best ever at starting a song. The first few bars always grab you and pull you in to the rest of the song. Of course the phenomenal backing was a huge part of this but Ella's taste never failed.
The Greatest Singer Ever, AND, EVER, AND, EVER, could sing in any KEY, and CHALLENGE the greatest musicians with her SCAT IMPROVISATION, ELLA invented the Pop Singer, but today her talent isn't realized, because no one has talent, or originality.
@@paulharrell7964 I have a soft spot for Ann Brown (the Original Bess), but Ella's voice was pure. You can tell her voice needs a rest in this video but she is 99% better than any other singer when well rested. I am classically trained and in college I was asked in a tiny voice class who I thought was the best singer of the last hundred years, all I said was Ella, everyone else chose an opera singer; my teacher said I had the best answer.
ella is great as always but that cat on the piano playing with one hand while he wipes his head after ht tased his handkerchief out of his jacket of how cool his that with ella / sing ella sing / swing ella swing
My God... Enrico Rava says that Peterson was a boring piano player!!!!! Dear Enrico Rava, what can I say dear?!? Are You fuckin' crazy?!? Oscar swings like a train!!!!

Ella Fitzgerald is perhaps the BEST female vocalist ever to walk the earth

Certainly the best non-classical singer of either gender to walk the earth IMO!
60 + years but still fresh as a daisy
this could have happened yesterday. ella's music of this era doesn't age. thank you for this.
Never thought I’d say this, but I wish Oscar would lay off just a little bit when Ella is singing!
Nope. I would’ve said I agree when I was younger, but today, no way.
The queen of Scat. Oh My God!!!! This is just exquisite
Ella on the mic and Oscar on the keys. pure magic.

I will love you for EVER Ella!!!!
There are some things in life with no expiration date. What a voice! Thank you very much for sharing this performance.
It's so sad that music does not have the sincerity of yesterday and delivered by its original designers. Ella will live in our hearts forever!
So relaxed.
Outstanding!! A better scat singer is inconceivable.

direfranchement Everyone is phenomenal! Ella is exquisite as usual.
Defy gravity with rhythmic freedom. I like that.
August 2020. I watch her and Oscar and the rest -- and I forget to breathe!
thanks for posting this. the accompaniment was brilliant here! complemented ella's voice and scating perfectly. Simply magical.
Great lady, smooth voice
BADASSERY!!!! This is magnificent! ♡
Ella versus all the orchestra.
Our 9w (England) Johnny Dankworth. - much missed

what is wrong with the two people who thumbed this down? This is beautiful!

They must have been aiming for the like button but missed it :D
OMG how can you even explain it !
1:33 you can clearly see how she clapping her fingers, which mean that the rhytm must be more faster; very nice =)
Scat-a-doodle rat-a-roodle ba-boodle savoy oh boy
I bet that took her back, you can tell by the lightness when she says Savoy. Be she thought of Chick and all of them
Para Ella no tenía importancia nada, era una espléndida muestra del talento, sin modestia, porque no sabía de éso, era natural y maravillosa.
The six who have given the thumbs down, please explaint
Looks like Oscar Peterson on piano, and Ella mentions John Dankworth, on sax, late husband of Dame Cleo Laine

Laraee Johnson , the cat is my city Montreal’s own Oscar Peterson. We are very proud of him!
Did she ever record a version at the Chick Webb tempo?
Does anyone know the full band lineup for this show-thanks,
