For those that have owned and worn a pair of "RM's" products they would completely understand why a Dane would send a scrappy looking pair of boots that were made in Australia to a Swede to bring them back to their original glorious condition. Your work is exemplary. I wish you were closer to my part of the world.
Excellent video, I had no idea a crack in the upper could be fixed, particularly germaine to a pair of my favourite brogues that will be with me for a lot longer now, thanks for sharing
Nice work. I loved my Gardeners. Wore them to death and couldn't afford to repair or replace them at the time, and with the company issuing 2 pairs of safety boots a year... I hated the steel-capped boots, I was luck with wearing the gardeners as long as I did. I've had a few different styles of RM's and they all feel so lovely to put on. To me, it was the strangest feeling wearing boots the fit perfectly. Now I'm reduced to UGG boots due to feet/leg issues.
I've seen my share of soothing videos but yours is unique enough, thanks to pacing, vibe and music choice, to earn yourself a new subscriber. Keep up the good work!
I always got RM's work boots over the years. Other brands gave me blisters straight away. After doing bricklaying and concreting with neglect, they would last me about a year and then I'd buy another pair. When I went into office work the boots lasted me at least 12 years with being looked after and polished. I still have them somewhere. I might get them totally restored just for a spin. They are expensive now.
RM Williams boots are my favourite - so comfortable. Having said that, Kennedy-Parker from the same city (Adelaide) are starting to make a name for themselves. I have 4 pairs of RMW’s and one pair of K-Ps that I use in rotation. All really comfy.
Please don't speed up the video or skip part when you are applying various creams and conditioners to both the shoes. It's one of the most satisfying part of the video.
It would be next to impossible to find a boot repair shop with this kind of skill and expertise outside of a large city. Also the cost would rival the cost of a new pair.
If the shoes are of good quality, the repair cost won't rival the cost of a new replacement. Also, the model of shoe that you have may no longer be produced, so you are giving a new life to an old favourite.
*It's completely ok to have shoes repaired. Cobblers do this for a living and it's great for them. I'm glad cobblers get business when they can, in a society who would rather throw away shoes than replace them. I know not everyone throws them away. It's nice being able to find a cobbler though! People have shoes that hold sentimental value too so it makes it worth it 😊!*
Its actually cheaper to go to a trusted cobbler, utmost you pay for replacements like leather or rubber soles, french tips or new paints.. the labor cost is worth it if the cobbler is really skillful. Buying new leather shoes is still expensive and frustrating at times especially with brands trying to trick buyers with faux leathers. I'm trying to learn every trick to maintain my leather shoes, you will realise soon that there are things only a cobbler can do.
As with many repairs of things that open and shut, looking after everyday items we all own, shoe/boot care ought to be part of life skills. Also, skills in leather care is interesting and challenging.
I have a beloved pair of Josef Seibel walking shoes, many times resoled. Now one has developed a deep crack over the top where the ball of the foot it. I have been searching everywhere for a way of repairing the crack. You mention fillers in your video. Can you list the filler products that would be used for that purpose ? Many many thanks, with hope. Lavinia in Canada
You are most skilled and do great work. I don't know much about leather fillers and the like but if they hold up over time the restoration of the boots was well worth whatever it cost.
Well, the filling effect of the leather binder is limited as you can see on the end result. No point in a serious filling where the leather creases. But this binder reinforces the fibres in the leather and helps keeping the cracks closed. The sanding after, to open up the leather for the conditioning, is as important. With shoe trees and proper care these repairs should last a while. But sadly I've seen many of these repairs that I've done don't get the care they need, and the shoes back to bad shape much too soon. My guess is ten more years, but who knows. I hope he'll cherish them. I put a lot of hours on them.
I’m an apprenticing cobbler and I was wondering about the conversation you had with the client about the longevity of the restoration of the cracks. Over time they will recrack. Do you just lay it out for the client like that? Thanks so much. You do really great work!
If the customer starts caring for them as he now should, they should last quite a long time still. They won't crack more, and with constant care the upper should stay in quite good shape for some time. Naturally I had a conversation with the customer about the probable remaining life span of the shoes, and I assume he understands that when he spends this kind of money on old shoes they need better care in the future. But I'm sure we also spoke about that. I can't remember the conversation today. I just know what I usually tell the customers.

When you repair the leather surface cracks, after you put filler you sand it. I am wondering if sanding would sand away the top grain of the leather ....
Of course. But I don't sand very deep. I basically just sand away the binder and open up the top grain a little to make the leather more susceptible to absorb the much needed conditioner.
@@lorddiablo8575 I have sandpapers from 80 to 1200 and use mostly 240 to 1200 depending on whats needed. I can't say which I use, because I use them all.
RMWs, as it is common knowledge are priced aud$ 649 -- 900, even over 1K, depending on style. Best guess for repair in video could be 150--220. Subject to RMW or a specialist cobbler's factual figures, it would be unlikely that most extensive repair could cost over 275 in Australia.
I own TWO pairs of RM Williams boots and the price I paid for them a number of years ago ...I would never let them get that ratty. They were $345.00 a pair back then and I cannot imagine the price now for them!!
It was worth it to the customer. He knew the price in advance and what new boots cost. But you seem to ignore the sentimental value of things. I once restored a pair of slippers for 7x the price of a new pair. And another thing to add. The boots gets better than factory new after recraft. The only thing I cannot restore is the uppers. But with proper care in the future, they can last a long while still. I have reinforced the leather fibres and decreased the cracks.

When that is a requirement I can't really paint, spackle or wax the cracks. The old cracks and scratches will show, when you don't put repair cream or wax on them. But I quess I should be flattered that you expected more from me.
