      Yeah. I mean, the line distribution discourse is real but it's gotten a bit silly. People will see a distribution where it's mostly equal, maybe within a 10 second difference, and they'll start rioting. Sure, it's a bit evil to make someone do absolutely NOTHING meaningful for a whole song, especially if they're a good singer and wanted another part, but most of the time people are making problems out of nothing. They probably wouldn't have noticed the "inequality" if they weren't out here counting seconds. It's ridiculous

    • @thethingcalledlisa

      A lot of soloists also have to do a lot more than sing (i.e. rap and dance) as well as it being a bit harder to make a song more interesting when it features only one voice so you often times have to be a lot better of a singer with a more interesting vocal colour than a lot of group members (imo a ton of groups have one or two people whose voice I just call the "basic kpop voice" and it works really well in a group but I see them standing out very little as a soloist)

      @watashi5700 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      @Bunnybunny5656 Very true. Twice is almost a decade old and has been making songs for themselves for years now. Jeong can definitely request more lines or write another song that she sings the most in again if she wanted to. Extra lines are extra work when performing, and fans aren't taking into account her comfortability. I definitely feel like she asked for less to sing during the times she was in and out of hiatus. And she probably doesn't want to overdo it/strain her voice like how their producers make Nayeon and Jihyo do with those high notes out of their comfortable range.

    I think some of us, nevies, knew that Soyeon has mixed Shuhua's voice with other members' a lot of times, and we're not crazy. It's not about being a chameleon. If I hear Minnie's very peculiar tone, it's because I'm actually hearing Minnie's voice not other person imitating her. It's even more noticeable since the "I Love" album because Shuhua's voice tends to be less edited than ever. So we're actually hearing her real and clean voice now.

    • @lunarisita26

      I would say kudos to Shuhua because she has improved enough that the producer line doesn't feel the need to mix or edit her voice that much anymore.
      And Soyeon is kind of right in the sense that when you take into account G-IDLE's vocal tones, you notice that Shuhua has the plainest one, I mean, the least distinctive. Because Miyeon, Minnie, and Yuqi have such noticeable tones, the fact that Shuhua's can be blended without sounding weird with them is not a lie.

    for people who are interested, there are tons of "recording behind" videos of kpop groups
    you could have a basic grasp of how they record songs and you could realistically see why some members get fewer lines than others.
    you could realistically see who are struggling. some groups even show retakes or when a member needs to take over another member's part
    for singers/producers, watching IU's recording behind is a master class. she is in a level of her own in regards of that.

    The simplest way to describe it is that they want the best person on that part. You would rather want someone who is best on that role rather than someone is good on that role. I do understand, and I also think that it's okay if some members get more lines (especially if it's the main vocalist). Not only that, but you can shine in other ways ; you can have a short but iconic/killing part, or get center in a dance break, ect.
    However, I still think it's a shame if the gap is really huge between members. Especially if it's always the same member who gets 5 seconds. After all, as a fan, I want to see all of them shine at some point.
    If I was an idole I would personally hate not getting lots of lines haha, but I guess it depends on the personality.

  • @blynnhil
    @blynnhil หลายเดือนก่อน +29

    I saw some comments saying that "but some idols only have a few seconds of lines and managed to sing them well, so why don't they get more lines?"
    That's the whole point, because these idols want to show their best on stage, so some will have less lines because that's the amount of time/lines that they're confident/the company's confident they can sing well when recording and during live performances. But sometimes, the moment you give them longer lines/another part, they may not sound as good/as stable live. (In some cases they might be really good singers but their songs may not be in their comfortable range too)
    I'm not saying all of them are like this, of course there are some who may be really good singers and the company just doesn't give them more lines.
    But especially these days, people are always looking for MR removed/live performances/encore performances, and so if they already know that they can't perform well live and they get more lines, some of them may not be as stable and just end up getting attacked, which is why those idols would prefer to have less lines but stable outcome.

    The thing about the sound engineers joining two voices into one makes sooo much sense now. I was always confused how so many artists could not even do the notes that they sang in recording, live. Makes so much sense. Some ppl cant hit those notes, so when theyre live and they attempt it, of course itll sound bad. Its not them and they cant do it.

      It's such a common and even easy practice:
      - Have OG singer sing the line, and tune the hell out of it.
      - Have good singer mimic OG singer's voice, while singing the line properly
      - Mix the two together, synchronize it perfectly, and watch magic happen LMAO

    I mean she is 100% right. Like I have seen some idols be angry with line distribution but they also are not good singers so why are you mad...learn how to sing and then you will have more lines in a song. I would also be happy to have small amount of lines to sing if I were them, it's less work.

    there is definitely various opinion on this topic. for ex idol like sakura and shuhua mentioned it themselves that they felt burdened so its better to get less line. however there is also idol that want to get more line but never being given the chance to do so. after all it is a show business, if you want to stay in the light then you need to appeal and get the spotlight or else youll get overshadowed and stand back dimmed in the corner.
    i believe there is a case like what daisy said but there is also testimony, i forgot who said it that some member/s are blatantly being pushed up by some higher up people in the company, so whether they actually capable or not it didn't really matter, they will still get more chance either in singing, time screen, or center position even many individual deals. or there is also idol that get mistreated or bullied because offending someone in their company and end up getting so minimal in any group or individual activity, despite their talents and appeal.

    When Daisy mentioned the producer having another singer of the group go in to sing another person's part, and the sound engineers fusing the two voices together had me thinking of a certain group that has a member who's really bad at singing, and her fans talking about her voice is a fusion of three other members.

    As someone involved in production, it's such a nightmare working with groups that are more than 5. The main producer sometimes wants the face of the group to sing specific lyrics, sometimes we would record everyone to pick the right voice only then to just mix 2 or 3 vocals together. But don't be discouraged by this cuz not everyone in a group wants to sing, I know someone who just wants to dance and be given a few to little lines in the song.

    and of course, having less lines would not be an issue for some, but it would be an issue for others, I know that at least Sooyeong from SNSD talked about that
    also, less lines usually lead to less screen time in mv and less center time in performance, and, as a fan, I want to see and hear my favs as well

      Tbf not all kpop songs are made specifically for a group, a lot of them come from purchasing demos that get translated into korean and modified into the final song. The korean producers are still usually the ones assigning lines tho so they can consider how to distribute so that all members get their highlight moment. I do remember other older sm idols talking abt not enough lines like a lot of suju members in the early years bc of how many members there were and partially why they hated kyuhyun getting added after debut cuz they'd get less lines

    It really sucks how in the K-Pop industry, nobody gaf about vocals. Like, why does “this member couldn’t sing this well” or “this member doesn’t suit this genre” even exist? An artist should be well equipped vocally and artistically for their own production and songs. Their songs should be molded towards THEM, not molded towards the TRENDS or their AUDIENCE. It’s crazy how idols are expected to sing from Disney grade songs to like rock metal punk. It’s all about the trends and not the members’ vision for their artistic careers.

    • @unklmonk651

      Kind of lame to throw a blanket statement about how nobody in kpop gaf about vocals. Because they do.
      These are also idol groups, not independent artists who pay their own producers. These idols can do that after they learn everything they can from being part of group and graduate to being an actual artist....like the late Jonghyun, zico, gd, and soyeon.
