Got a Z Grill also and just ordered the grill grates...will have to try your method because previous grilling of the steaks didn't turn out good as I like.
Looks like a great method. Have you tried just removing the grease tray and not the heat deflector? I feel like It would be better to protect the auger and heating element from any juices from the steak.
I haven't tried it that way. The fire is roaring so much hat it looks like all of the grease gets instantly incinerated. You could also use a cast iron skillet and not have any grease issues.
Hey i saw the grill grate site doesnt mention ZGrills I just got the Z Grill 10002E and came across your video .. looked like you had the same model and figured you'd respond faster than their support.. which grate did you get ?
@@TheDavidSomerville I’m sorry... let me be clear. This video just sold ME on the Z Grill. I was going back and forth between different pellet grills and was leaning more towards the Z. But this video just convinced me to buy one bc my only concern was searing. Thanks for solving that for ME. 👌🏽👍🏽

I have also seen folks searing steaks in cast iron skillets instead of GrillGrates. What model Z Grill do you have?
@@TheDavidSomerville I have the 700E series bought it in Dec 2018
@@ammomeister I hope the GrillGrates make you happy. They are one of my favorite grilling gadgets!
@@TheDavidSomerville I hope so, I will be using the pellet grill more often!
I was wondering about this. Thank you 👍👌
You are very welcome! Thanks for watching :)
How about cleanup with grease going into the fire box
It's a good excuse to make me clean up the firebox like I should be doing in the first place.
Awesome grill marks! I'll need to try this trick next time I make a steak on the smoker. Cheers!
Thanks for watching! I saw you have a Rec Tec, are you happy with the grill?
@@TheDavidSomerville I absolutely love it. Gets to temp fast and stay at temp throughout even the longest cook.

How did you not get the Her error code?? Completely derailed my searing at temps above 550f
Nicely done!
Thanks for watching, Tom! Hope you are having fun with your Z Grill :)
Nice cook bro
Thank you for watching and the kind words! #KeepOnBBQn
I would think with the grease that unit won't last. You want super hot get propane or ZGrill sells a solid plate that fits.
Yeah that’s really cool.
Thanks for watching! I hope it put a smile on your face :)
Does fat drip into the pot and on the bottom of the grill when you do this?
Not really. Anything that drips that close to the firepot gets incinerated.
What is that extra grate you used to sear steak with?
It is a GrillGrate panel. One of the best grilling accessories ever made...freaking love them. www.grillgrate.com/
What size panel
Did you get for a zgrill 6001. Tia

what size grillgrates are in this video?
Tommie, I have a set of two panels and each are about 14 inches long and 5 inches wide. Great investment.
Love it
You just sold a Z Grill... that was my only hesitancy in buying one.
Nope. I sold my Rec Tec. I still have two of my Z grills and have leant the first one I got to a friend. Very satisfied with the brand.

Which Model Z-Grill was used in the video?
I was using a 1000 series but this would work with any of the 700 series as well.
@@TheDavidSomerville 550a aswell?
That ain’t a steak!! It’s a piece of lunch meat!!
